Chapter 148: Could Do Nothing (Ch.148)

"It’s okay... I’m here, it’s going to be okay." Darren whispered to Eloneth whose shock had graduated into full blown panic.

Darren had lost track of how long had passed and exactly how many times he had repeated those words until they had now become like a mantra.

There was an intense and overwhelming urge in Darren’s heart to comfort his mate, however Darren himself was not certain of much and so this was the only assurance he could give.

As long as he was by her side, it would eventually all be okay because Darren would make it so, he just had to.

And somehow, all Darren said, Eloneth believed them... she grasped unto his every word like a life saving strand and her breathing slowly calmed.

Eloneth was held close to Darren, he had pulled her into his arms when he noticed she would hurt herself in her rage at Queen Heveneth.

Though Darren was fully in support of his mate, Queen Heveneth bore the greatest fault for all that had happened.

In her greed to conquer the East sea, she had provided the perfect distraction needed by the dark forces and had occupied the entire supernatural realm with an unprovoked war,

Leaving everyone in a tight spot and caught off guard when the forsaken had showed up.

No matter how Darren thought of it, it originally seemed like Queen Heveneth had done all of this because she had switched to the side of the dark forces,

But it turned out it had all just been her greed and that was even more pathetic.

Yet even knowing Eloneth was not wrong, Darren still did not want to see her hurting herself over what had happened.

Whatever harm incurred by his mate was a harm to Darren himself, Darren would much rather his mate knew nothing but peace and warmth.

He had found her much too late, this was true but Darren believed it was not too late to compensate for his late arrival.

Eloneth’s head was rested against Darren’s chest as she clutched tightly onto him, her silent tears soaking up his clothing.

Darren’s heart ached but he spoke nothing of it, he only held unto his mate because her warmth comforted his heart just as his did for her.

In all this, Queen Heveneth stood off to the side, her head lowered with shame.

Eloneth had demanded to have her mother leave but Queen Heveneth was unwilling to leave her daughter’s side.

For a moment, they all just remained in that position before Eloneth finally spoke.

"At the lake...there was a girl...with red hair... she saved me..." Eloneth recalled suddenly, it seemed she had been in and out of consciousness while stuck at the bottom of the frozen lake.

"That was...my sister." Darren replied quietly.

"Is she... alright?" Eloneth asked again after a moment.

Darren did not respond this time and his lack of response was all the answer Eloneth needed.

"Oh Summer!" Eloneth sobbed out quietly.

After a short while, Darren was finally able to soothe Eloneth just enough for her to lay back down on her bed.

"Can you get something to help ease her?" Darren asked, finally paying attention to the healer.

Meanwhile, Queen Heveneth’s presence was still completely ignored.

"Certainly." The healer assured, taking her leave and only then did Eloneth acknowledge Queen Heveneth.

"Mother... I have memories and glimpses but I cannot put them in order. I cannot tell which truly happened and which is just a mirage...tell me all that has happened in this time..."

"Especially about her... the girl who saved me." Eloneth requested in a firm tone.

Eloneth stared quietly at the young wolf who was her mate, Darren was his name, a warrior wolf of crimson moon.

He stood at a table in her quarters, stirring a herbal potion the healer had left behind with much attention and care as though he could not have found a more engrossing activity than preparing Eloneth’s potion.

Now that she had calmed and the panic and horror at awakening to that foreign chill in her bones and finding her hair in such a state had finally faded,

Eloneth could now marvel at her newly found mate who had managed to calm all her worries with just a few reassuring words.

He was a dashing young man, so much that Eloneth was still left in awe just staring at him like this. It was difficult for her to comprehend that this man was actually hers.

In the time she was imprisoned at the bottom of the lake, Eloneth could not believe so much had already happened, even the Crimson Moon had returned to the supernatural realm.

And somehow, the head warrior of Crimson Moon turned out to be her own mate.

Eloneth could not decide if she detested the turbulent times or if she was grateful for these turbulent times because without them, the reclusive Crimson Moon would never return to the supernatural realm.

Yet, along with Eloneth’s joy, there was a terrible ache in her heart as she watched her mate.

Eloneth could see it clearly, even if Darren tried to conceal it. There was an aura of sadness and despair that hung heavily over him and Eloneth knew just why.

She heard it all from Queen Heveneth and Lord Kodin who had paid a visit too.

The Crimson Alpha, the one who had saved Eloneth’s life had fallen into a critical state as a result.

Though Darren assured Eloneth it was not her fault, that his sister had already exhausted herself in the battle before hand and saving Eloneth was just the final crack.

However, how could Eloneth shirk off the blame? The war in the Mer sea had been a result of her mother’s actions.

Had it not been for her mother, things could never have gotten this bad. And to think the Crimson Alpha still was willing to save Eloneth despite it all.

Shame and guilt were a few of the feelings that overrun Eloneth’s heart and she could only watch Darren in silence like this,

Because for the one who had saved her, Eloneth herself could do nothing.
