Chapter 103: Someone’s Coming (Ch.103)

Nile’s eyes fluttered open after a moment of quiet to catch a hand hovering over his hair,

Nile figured the merman had intended to stroke his hair as a gesture of comfort but had been contemplating it before Nile caught him in the act.

Nile found this merman rather intriguing, his actions and impulses were strangely tender, unlike what Nile would have expected of a battle mer who was practically his captive at this point.

From what Nile knew of mers, they were calm and reserved creatures but always retaliated brutally when someone overstepped their limits.

It was why Nile knew clearly the Sea King’s intent to flood the Floral Domain was a personal vendetta and his mers were in agreement with him because it simply was their nature.

Like the calm before the storm, they were never the ones to stir up trouble first but never shied away from it either.

In a nutshell, the merfolk were rather intriguing and this mer before Nile’s eyes in particular...

Kristen quickly withdrew his hand and Nile chuckled quietly as he surveyed Kristen’s expression, somehow understanding the question in his eyes.

"You want to know if I regret it? Being born an oracle?" Nile asked, Kristen nodded.

Nile thought over it for a moment, truly he had watched many of his nightmares become the reality of others and while he had been able to prevent some, there were others that simply was the unavoidable fate.

Sometimes knowing the Creator’s will did not necessarily place you a step ahead of others, it only gave you a greater burden and lifetime regrets of what you could have done differently.

Yet at the same time, his visions had saved many lives, the Creator’s voice spoken through him had brought comfort, assurance and peace to aching hearts.

His ability to spirit walk had served as the only line of communication between the dead and the living, his prophecies had fortified hearts ahead of it’s manifestation,

His blessings had kept many safe from dangers as they embarked on travailing endeavors.

To every gift given, there was always a price to pay and Nile found if living a life of regrets and self blame was his price, he would willingly pay it.

"No, never. My connection to the Creator is my sole purpose for existing. To always have his touch, his warmth, his love... it’s a privilege I am not deserving of."

"And though there are times like this where I do not know the way forward, times I do not understand his will, I would never trade it for anything." Nile said truthfully.

Kristen smiled and nodded in understanding and then he huffed quietly.

"What?" Nile asked in amusement, watching as Kristen lifted a hand to rub his throat, an aggrieved look on his face.

"We communicate perfectly, don’t we now? Don’t start sulking about it now." Nile said with a sad smile.

Kristen shook his head slightly as he pulled his legs up to his chest and rested his head on them.

"But there are things you want to say that I will not understand if you do not say it out loud?" Nile asked,

Kristen nodded as he pointed to himself and then to Nile before he made a strange movement with his hand.

"You... like me? I believe we already established that." Nile said, chuckling quietly.

Kristen nodded and then shook his head again, seeming as though he himself was not certain of his response.

"Is it a yes or a no?" Nile asked with a smirk,

"Or...in between?" Nile teased, Kristen huffed in annoyance.

"Okay...okay fine, I’ll take a closer look, just show me see what you want to say." Nile said,

Kristen shook his head slightly, leaning back against the wall.

Nile could see the merman truly felt dispirited by his inability to convey his words in a way Nile could understand it and Nile suddenly felt an intense need to comfort the merman.

Nile did not think much to it, he had always been more compassionate than he had the rights to be and Nile did not consider it a bad thing.

Being considerate and having a care for others was not a weakness as most people believed it to be, and being a spirit guide meant having a heart large enough to accommodate the pains of all of the Creator’s people.

"Don’t beat yourself up, I understand how important the mers consider their voices. It must be difficult, waking up without an ability that had always come natural. When the poison is neutralized, you can tell me then." Nile assured.

Kristen lifted a gaze to Nile, his lips pursed and in his eyes, Nile could see the uncertainty.

Nile understood the merman was well aware of the possibility that he could not be saved from the Flame Poison,

"Listen Kristen, I will not deny the severity of your condition or the fact that you may very well not make it through this,"

"But your life will determine if Zariah can make it out of the Sea Kingdom without hassle and so you are not allowed to accept this fate."

"You will live Kristen...you know why?" Nile asked the merman, Kristen shook his head slowly.

"Because I won’t let you die. I cannot change everyone’s fate, perharps I cannot save everyone... but I can and I will save you, no matter what." Nile promised solemnly.

Kristen nodded, a small smile on his lips while the tips of his ears had turned a shade of red.

Nile chuckled at the merman’s switch from resignation to embarrassment in barely a few seconds.

’He is soulful and so beautiful...’ Nile found himself thinking as he just sat, staring at the merman.

"You know, I never thought I would say this to a merman, but you are adorable Kristen... and beautiful too." Nile murmured, before he chuckled at the cringe worthy words he had just said.

"Mers are always beautiful, I know...but yours is just, well different." Nile explained,

"Somehow I feel I can trust you and it’s not even because of something you’ve done or said... it’s just something about you that I can’t quite place my finger on."

"I see now why Zariah was so kin on saving you, you..." Nile paused mid sentence as he sensed movement heading their way.

It was clear in the slight change in the movement of the water that something or someone was headed their way.

"Someone’s coming." Nile said as he rose to his feet, grabbing the Tide Trident, he passed a glance to Kristen.

"It seems they have come for you and the trident, I fear I cannot let either return to the Sea Palace at this time."

"For all you know, I have no intentions to save you and am only after the trident, I could be taking you right towards danger."

"If you held intentions to escape from me and take this back..." Nile said, gesturing with his head to the tide trident,

"This will be your only chance, so Chief Royal Guard of the Sea Kingdom... what will you do?" Nile asked with a raised brow,

Of course, regardless of the merman’s decision, Nile had no intentions of handing him or the trident over till his mission was complete,

But for some reason, Nile still wanted to know what the merman would chose. Nile wanted to know if he needed to watch his back or if he could be certain the merman would stand with him.

Nile watched with a raised brow as the merman stepped up to him and stretched a hand,

Nile quirked a brow, hesitating for a moment before he placed the trident in the merman’s awaiting hand.

The Tide Trident glowed in recognition of the merman’s royal blood and Nile’s eyes widened slightly as the waters around them became increasingly troubled, their only protection being the sea pod.

"I am not bound by the laws of the Sea Kingdom, so it is okay if I break a few of them, but you are a prince of the sea."

" If you wield the sacred Tide Trident without the Sea King’s blessing, you will be breaking the laws of your own people." Nile pointed out as he stared into the merman’s silver orbs, unsure what to make of his actions.

The merman shrugged casually, merely tightening his grip around the Tide Trident as he extended a hand and rested it over Nile’s chest,

Nile’s eyes trailed the merman’s movement, somehow understanding the question in his eyes. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

"You want to know where I wish to go?" Nile asked uncertainly, the merman nodded in agreement and Nile finally let his suspicions fade away, a small smile settling on his lips.

"The water hydrant lies in the deepest caves of the Northern Seas. Precisely the part of the sea that was barricaded off by the Sea King, that is where we go." Nile replied.

The merman nodded as he moved the Tide Trident over to his right hand and then once again, he stretched his left hand to Nile.

Nile grinned as he placed his hand in the merman’s awaiting hand,

The merman then closed his hands over Nile’s hand in a tight grip, holding Nile’s gaze for a moment longer before he turned his gaze to the entrance of the cave.
