Temporary bride for the demon overlord-Chapter 21: Stepcousin
Chapter 21 - Stepcousin
Veronica finished the last word with a flourish. She grabbed the coffee mug with a triumphant smile, only to stop short.
There was no coffee left in the mug. Oh well, it was a tiring endeavor all through.
Trying to finish her manuscript and meet the deadline at the same was an herculean task. Especially considering how wispy she was and how she lets her character explore and define themselves.
She frowned at the screen. Right now, her antagonist was really starting to look like Seraphina.
She sighed. She couldn't help it. Especially when people close to her are being such a tragic definition of human.
Her stomach rumbled so loud and she rolled her eyes. Time to eat probably. And a few dozens of caffeine refill.
She stepped out of her room and went straight to the dinning room. It was a shame to see Seraphina and her mother already seated.
"Aw shit." She rubbed her gritty eyes.
She was too tired to deal with their sweetness. She has a history of disliking "artificially sweetened" stuff.
She dragged a chair and watched with a savage satisfaction at the purse on Mrs Huang tart lips.
"Good morning. How are you feeling today Auntie?" She hoped it was like crap.
"Very well darling. How's your stay?" Mrs Huang carefully asked.
"Not bad."
"Not bad eh?" Seraphina chimed in. She chewed delicately.
"Not good either." She grinned devilishly. She loaded her plate with coddled eggs and sausages.
"Seraphina and I were just talking about what happened in the store the other day." She began softly.
And here in promptly disappeared her appetite. She dropped her fork with a loud clack that sent Seraphina and her mom wincing.
"Be gentle dear," she reprimanded softly.
"What happened in the store is it?" She repeated.
"Yes! I thought Karma was terribly upset. She looked really angry and purple in the face. And she really did_"
"Before you continue with great detail, describing Karma's anger, how about asking your friends what they did?"
Mrs Huang watched the exchanged casually. As casually as a hawk waiting to sweep in and carry baby chicks at the right time.
"I asked them. I wouldn't tell me anything." She said sulkingly.
"Pardon my french Auntie, but those dumb fucks deserved way more than what Karma did." She chewed her sausages.
Mrs Huang gasped and clutched her pearl, Seraphina looked mildly irritated.
"Mind your language, won't you?" Mrs Huang reprimanded sharply.
"I'm very sorry Auntie." Fuck her if she wasn't anything but.
"That's why you're the only one I can ask. Will you tell me what happened?" Seraphina took Veronica's hand in hers.
Veronica smiled widely and snatched her hands away.
"Fine. Can I eat first at least?" She looked up from swallowing her coffee.
She could see the subtle flare of Mrs Huang nostrils, the way her thin face contorted with suppressed rage at the perceived disrespect.
"I'm really in a hurry. The second fitting is scheduled for this afternoon and I've got to sign some files in the office. Can't you tell me before eating?" Seraphina said forcefully.
"Pardon my french _"
"I won't!" Mrs Huang growled.
Veronica chuckled and almost choked on her eggs. Almost sending Mrs Huang into a fit of apoplexy.
"Those two motherfu..erm..I mean ladies were so disrespectful. They called Karma all sort of names that would singe the hair off Auntie's head." She grinned rakishly.
She got serious again. "I was ready to stab the reedy one in her_"
"Oh my God." Mrs Huang breathed.
"Eyes. But Karma stopped me. She gave them a very nice set down. The type they deserved." Veronica concluded with a shrug.
She wondered what had possessed her to say such crude words in front of Mrs Huang. After all she had always taken the woman's delicate constitution into account.
Probably the lack of enough coffee in her blood. She frowned her third cup.

"Oh. It's all my fault. I invited them! They made Karma feel inferior. Like she wasn't worth something on her own. They made her feel like she can't hold a candle _"
"Funny that you should say that. I never really said anything like that now did I?"
"What your cousin meant_"
"Stepcousin,"
"Uh?"
"I said, Seraphina is my stepcousin." She smiled at her.
Mrs Huang coughed and turned crimson.
"I mean, you guys are basically siblings after all."
Veronica wanted to cackle loudly at how the words were furthest thing from the truth.
It was in the way Seraphina regarded Veronica with acute disdain, the way her smile curled upward into a sneer.
"She's been feeling really guilty for everything that happened! She'd better make it up to her." Mrs Huang said earnestly.
Her tone was tinged with a edge of desperation.
"By not inviting those dumb fu.. people. Karma was really pissed."
"Do you think I should get her a gift?" Karma said cheerfully.
It was then that Veronica noticed the white paper bag on Seraphina's tightly clad legs.
"You got her a gift?" She eyed the bag dubiously. She raised her hands to check but Seraphina snatched it up with an awkward laugh.
"I better start going. Busy day ahead." She stood up swiftly.
"I guess I'll leave too. Enjoy your meal," Mrs Huang stood up too.
Veronica eyed the pair with suspicion. What were they up to this time around?
They were always plotting one thing or the other. She wondered if telling Karma would be the wisest option or keeping it to herself.
She didn't like shifty look in Mrs Huang eyes, or the way the conversation had taken a rounded turn.
She was going to call Karma was she was done eating.
She warfed down the buttered rolls and washed it down with pumpkin juice. She stood up but stopped.
Her head was suddenly pounding. She gripped her head with both hands, a pained cry erupting from her mouth.
Her vision sw
armed in and out of focus. She gripped the table, swaying precariously.
When suddenly, her eyes snapped open. She breathed in the clean scent of air and her eyes gained clarity to see what she really can't see before.
