Chapter 222: What do you gods do anyway?

Selene POV

As Kragen laid me gently on the bed, I felt a wave of exhaustion wash over me. The events of the day – my confrontation with Nora, the strange occurrences in my office and the one that had happened in the corridor, seemed to crash down on me all at once.

The pack doctor bustled around me, checking my pulse and peering into my eyes. "Now then, Luna," he said kindly "Can you tell me how you feel?"

"I don’t know how to put it in words," I started quietly "But I was on my way to my office when I felt dizzy, by the time I opened my eyes, I was already standing at the door and I had no recollection of walking there myself. After that, I started working, felt another wave of dizziness again and here am I,".

When I finished, I saw the pack doctor staring at me thoughtfully, "I could have attributed the signs of dizziness to the pregnancy but then suddenly appearing in front of the door in your office, the nose bleeds... I don’t know what to make of it. But also, it could still be several things," he mused. "Stress, perhaps or a complication of the pregnancy which I checked a while ago and the baby seemed to be doing fine. But..." he trailed off, his brow furrowing.

"I’d suggest you go over to the hospital to run proper tests, only then we will know what’s wrong with you," the doctor said instead.

"But what?" Kragen demanded fixing his gaze "You wanted to say something just now. What is it?"

The doctor sighed. "Well, there are... other possibilities. Less natural ones and the nose bleeds is always an indication of something,". ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

I felt a chill run down my spine. "What do you mean?"

The doctor looked uncomfortable but the cold look on Kragen’s face must have loosened his mouth making him keep talking. "Well, Luna, given your position and the... circumstances of your pregnancy. We cannot rule out the possibility of foul play,".

The words hung in the air, heavy with implication. My mind raced back to Nora’s threats and the whispers about me that had been going on in the corridors of the pack house.

Kragen grabbed the doctor, lifting him above the ground, with his legs flailing "Are you suggesting that someone is trying to harm Luna Selene and her child?"

The doctor held up his hands placatingly. "I’m merely making an observation sir. The nose bleed is an indication of poison but I can’t seem to pick what kind of poison it is. There’s no sign of it anywhere but it could have been implanted in her body, sucking away life’s essence,".

"What!" Kragen’s eyes widened as he placed the doctor on the ground and came to kneel beside me, examining me.

I closed my eyes, suddenly feeling very small and vulnerable. "What can we do? I asked quietly "How can we trace this poison?"

The doctor came to pat my hand gently. "For now, I need you to rest. I’ll brew you a tonic to help with the dizziness and nosebleeds. Depending on how you react to it, I’d know the extent to which the poison is in your body. If there’s no reaction then it would mean that you ingested only a small amount and you’ll be fine. Meanwhile, we’ll keep a close eye on you and the baby. We need to move her to the hospital,".

The door of the room flew open and Noah rushed in with Reid by his side. As soon as I saw them, my eyes flew accusingly to Kragen who shrugged and mouthed. "I had to involve him. That’s the only way you’d take this seriously,".

"Selene!" Noah ran and knelt beside me "I heard what happened... are you alright? Doc, what’s wrong with her?"

"He believes she has been poisoned," Kragen supplied from where he stood.

I glared at him, wishing I could reach him from where I was, he wasn’t supposed to be telling Noah any of these things. It’ll only make him worry more. Why doesn’t he ever listen

"Who dares poison the Queen?" Noah growled straightening. "Was it in her food or water?" he asked, his eyes brimming with anger.

"I do not know the nature of the poison, Your Majesty. It’s strange and I’ve never seen something like it before. However, I am brewing a tonic for her. When she ingests it, depending on how she reacts to it, we can then know what kind of poison it is and how much of it she has in her body. For now, she needs rest,".

"I’ll double the guards," Noah said, his voice low and intense. "No one gets near you without my approval and I’ll personally oversee all your food and drink,".

I reached out, grasping his hand. "Noah, we don’t know if...,".

He cut me off, squeezing my hand gently. "We don’t know, but we can’t take chances. Not with your life and not with the future of Moon Whisper,".

I didn’t know what to say. So, I just lay there, surrounded by the scent of herbs and the murmur of Noah and Kragen discussing security measures and whatnot. I felt a complex mix of emotions. Fear, certainly, for myself and my unborn child. I was scared that I would not live long to carry the baby to terms or to see my daughters one last time.

To make peace with Xavier and to tell Noah that I love him with all my heart. I was scared that Nora would be released and would become a living nightmare for all of us. Whatever was happening – whether it was natural or a plot or something else entirely – I would face it. I had to, for the sake of my child and the future of Moon Whisper. As my hand rested on my belly, I made a silent vow.

"We’ll get through this," I whispered to my baby. "Together, we’ll overcome whatever comes our way,".

With that, I closed my eyes, allowing myself to rest under the watchful eyes of my protectors. Whatever challenges lay ahead, I would meet them head-on, with the strength and grace of the future ruler of Moon Whisper.

My eyes fluttered open, taking in the familiar surroundings. I was in Noah’s room, I could tell.

"You’re awake!" an unfamiliar voice said suddenly, startling me as I turned in its direction. At the foot of the bed, sitting primly on it was the woman I met the other night. She had a calm demeanour about her as she watched me silently. There was something slightly odd about her that I couldn’t place my finger on.

"The doctor was correct about the poison, Selene but thankfully, your wolf helped you out. You were supposed to die that day with the amount of poison you had to inhale. It was enough to take any person out, thankfully, Bea saved the day and she’ll be fine too. She just needs her rest,".

"I inhaled the poison?" I asked my eyes widening with surprise, "How?"

"When you went to visit, Nora. She has been consumed with darkness and there’s nothing you can do about her. She’s a reincarnation of Luna Carmen, the first Luna of Alpha Kiba of the First Pack. She’ll seek every means to destroy you, Selene. The evil in her is worse than her progenitor so do not try to help her by any means. I’ll try to keep you alive for as long as possible,".

I didn’t understand half of what she was saying but asking questions wouldn’t clear me either. Sighing, I tried to pull myself into a sitting position as I faced the woman. "What favours do you need now?"

She looked at me for a while, before a small smile settled on her lips. "You’re wiser than most creatures, Selene. When you die, I’d consider asking the ethereal heaven to make you a goddess of some sort, you’re so resilient,".

"The ethereal heaven that crossed their arms while another woman had to kill two innocent babies?" I fired "What do you gods do anyway? And what’s this excuse for not interfering in our lives? How can you call yourself a higher being and do nothing when things are going wrong? Do you think the babies dying that day wouldn’t have provoked Gaia and her daughter Dimitra for revenge? A simple swirl of your hand or whatever should have saved us a lot of trauma. Anyways," I sighed "Just let me die in peace... if I am a goddess, I’d interfere a lot in human lives,".

"Kragen is rubbing off on you," the woman said after a minute. "But that’s beside the reason I am here," from the small bag beside her, she pulled out a small, transparent bottle that contained something blue. "Drink this," she urged passing it to me.

"It’s pure, ethereal water, it’ll help flush out the remnants of the poison, strengthen your child and also cure Bea,".

"And why are you doing this?" I questioned refusing to drink the liquid. "How am I sure this is not some poisonous liquid to kill me?"

"I do not kill Selene unless it’s necessary. Aside from the vengeful path you’ve taken, you’re a pure soul... there’s no need to kill you and you should hurry, your husband will be here in a few minutes,".

"No!" I set the liquid on the table beside me. "I’m going to die anyway,".

"Okay!" she shrugged and picked it up from where it was on the table, sliding it inside her bag. "You’ll be in severe pain that might cause you haemorrhage. Not to mention, you’ll keep having periods of blackout where you will open your eyes and might see yourself in another pack. I should mind my business,".

I didn’t say anything, I continued staring pointedly at her. A few seconds later, she opened her bag, brought out the bottle and dropped it back on the bed stand before turning to me.

"Your mate would come in here for a few seconds to question you about Kragen. Do not lie to him. Tell him the truth,". She said and rose to her feet.

"Why?" I asked staring at her. "Kragen is my friend and I’ll lie if I have to to protect him,".

"He’s also my son, Selene... we’ve been over this. I need to find a way to stop him from coming here. You all are corrupting him and it’s not good for a god. I’ll be counting on you, bye," she said gently and disappeared into thin air.
