Chapter 223: He’s going to die a day after the birth of your child

Selene POV

Some seconds later, the door opened and Noah rushed in, an agitated expression on his face. He made a beeline for me, looking at me strangely as he came.

"Hey, honey!" I greeted him with a smile. "Is something wrong? I asked, "You look flustered,".

"I am more than flustered, Selene," he said and sat on the bed reaching for my hand. "Who exactly is Kragen? How do you know him? Where did you meet him?"

This must be the favour that woman was telling me to grant. "Why all of these sudden questions? I thought you said he told you he was a doctor ...".

"I doubt it," he shook his head. "Today, while we were together, I noticed that he didn’t have a shadow. Is he a spirit of some kind or something? He had no shadow. I’ve never seen him eat or drink anything plus he always comes in the same clothes as he does. He doesn’t have a scent and there’s this aura that’s always around him... it’s hard to explain it but... I don’t know... how exactly do you say you met him again?"

I inhaled deeply, feeling conflicted at the moment. If I should reveal the truth behind Kragen... I don’t know how Noah would react. Did he even believe in things like that? He might think I am bluffing or something. Then again, I could easily lie but... that woman... sounded pretty serious about asking me to tell Noah the truth. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

"He’s Fenrir Hellfang short for Kragen..." I said in one breath and watched as Noah’s eyes widened in disbelief.

"He’s...He’s the King of the Underworld?" Noah stuttered.

"Yes," I said with a smile "But don’t worry, he’s not as ruthless or cruel as people say he is. He’s a very sweet person who...".

"Did the moon goddess have to send the King of the Underworld to me because she wants me to die so quickly?" Noah scoffed rising to his feet. "These gods are truly funny. I get it... I’m going to die but the least you can do is to let me spend the little time I have left with my family and not to hover around me,".

That was unexpected.

I was expecting Noah to freak out and be scared but handled it like a piece of ordinary information.

"Fine!" he hissed "But why is he deceiving me, giving me all those potions to make me stronger? Is that his way to kill? Or perhaps, he wouldn’t want me to die as a weak King?" Noah mused with a smile on his face. "But come to think of it, it’s a thing of joy to have the King of the Underworld looking after you before dying... more like he’s here to take with him a very important King. I approve,".

"That’s not true, Noah!" I sighed "That’s not why he’s here. He truly wants you to get better, for the sake of the baby and of course my sake. He’s not here to kill you or anything. You’re not going to die,".

"C’mon, Selene," he stared at me with tenderness "I’ve come to terms with my death and I’m almost done putting everything that you’d need to run the pack in my absence. Don’t worry, we know now that any day I am fully recovered, Kragen might take me with him which would take a few more weeks according to him. That’s enough time to go for that trip you were talking to me about the other day,".

There was no need to try to convince him otherwise. So I listened to him croon about how he would get a royal scribbler and narrate his tales to the scribbler, so people could read long after his death and that it was going to be titled. "Two Kings!".

It was a lame title but I had to indulge him. Thankfully, Reid needed him for something so he had to leave. After he left, I decided to go for a walk to clear my head. These days I was always lying around and sleeping at the slightest opportunity. Promising that I would try to be mobile from henceforth, I left the pack house and started towards the garden at the back of it.

At the end of the garden was a small river... and I felt like taking a swim there. As I walked towards the river, my mind was empty and rid of thoughts. Something strange happened. An unfamiliar sensation filled my body, causing me to stop walking. Surprised, I tried to sit under a tree’s shade, hoping it was another pregnancy episode or side effect of whatever tonic the pack doctor had given me.

I remembered the tonic that woman had given me to take... I didn’t take it... instead, I had tucked it in the bottom drawer of the bedside table. I need to know who she is first before eating or drinking anything from her. While I waited for the uneasiness to pass, I stretched at the root of the tree and closed my eyes basking in the warmth that seeped through the leaves.

I willed my mind not to think of anything... I should enjoy the quiet and warmth. As I stretched there with my eyes closed, suddenly, it seemed as if I could hear every voice... everyone sounds... It seemed like I could understand what the tree underneath me was saying, what an insect flying over me was also saying.

My eyes flew open and I sat up. This was the first time this had happened to me. Scrambling to my feet, I postponed going towards the river and started back to the pack house. I had walked a few steps when I saw Kragen sitting at the base of a tree, his legs tucked under his chin and a sad aura hovering all over him. This was the first time I had seen him like that.

"Kragen?" I called out moving quickly to him.

When he saw me, he rose to his feet giving me a bright smile "Selene, I didn’t expect to find you here. How have you been? It’s been a while since we stopped and chatted," he said.

"That’s because you’ve been following my mate everywhere and snitching on me. I will never forget what you did, Kragen,"

"C’mon, Selene... I already apologized. It’s just that Noah asked me to look out for you always and to always tell him when you’re in trouble. Like an oath of brotherhood. I’m sorry but I’m not sorry at the same time," he paused and stared at me for a few seconds "You look fine,".

"What!" I glared at him taking several steps backwards. "What were you expecting? My dead body?" I snapped.

"That’s not what I mean," he eyed me suspiciously "You were so sick the last time I saw you... every part of your body reeked with it but now you seem fine somehow. Did you take anything in particular?" he asked.

I hadn’t drunk the tonic that woman gave me. So, it wasn’t possible.

"Nothing. I just woke up from sleep and Noah came to my room to ..." I trailed off in realization of what I was about to do. The strange woman made me promise never to mention anything about her to Kragen. If I told him about Noah’s questions, he’d press more and I might reveal the truth in the process. It was best he didn’t know and I know Noah won’t tell him.

"And I suddenly felt like coming here for a walk and then swimming in the river at the end of the garden. But I felt uneasy for a minute and then lay under the base of one of the trees up front. Then I decided to head back to the pack house. That’s all," I said.

"Oh!" he nodded "Then it must be the plants. Since you’re an elemental wolf, they must have healed you. Why didn’t we think of that. You’re fine now, Selene... fine and your wolf is too,".

"How about you?" I decided to change the topic. "You were looking so sad a minute ago, what’s wrong?"

"Me? Sad?" he pointed at his chest. Of course not. I was just..."

"I didn’t know gods lie too," I gave him a pointed stare "This is not also the first time, Kragen. You know you can talk to me about anything... I’ll understand. C’mon... we’re friends, aren’t we? Even more than your new friend,".

"Selene!" he sighed "Noah... his file was submitted to me a few days ago from the Ethereal heaven. He’s going to die a day after the birth of your child and I don’t know what to do, Selene... it’s just so unfair that he won’t be here to see his child for even the first year of his life. Or to go see his mother as planned... I’m torn, honestly... I know his death would hurt you the most and...".

"It’ll be fine!" I said, holding his hands. I was dying to tell him everything about that woman but I couldn’t and I couldn’t also give him a hint that I would die in place of Noah. "Let’s just leave in the moment, Kragen. He has about 7 months more... let’s just enjoy what we have right now. I have made up my mind not to allow anything to stand in the way of me and my happiness and I still believe that anything can happen... so just be positive, okay/"
