Tangled Hearts - The Alpha's Baby Mama-Chapter 221: It gets worse...
Chapter 221: It gets worse...
Selene POV
The first person I saw was Noah when I entered the pack house.
He was hunched over Reid, who was showing him something on a paper. His brows were furrowed in concentration and he seemed so immersed in whatever Reid was showing him, so it was normal for him not to notice my presence.
I continued watching, admiration dancing in my eyes. His colour was slowly returning at least. He had told me that last night, Kragen met him outside his office and gave him another tonic, that must work because he looked stronger than he did yesterday. A few seconds later, he and Reid left the pack house through the side entrance.
"I should work too!" I murmured to myself with a deep sigh. "I haven’t been able to tell Noah about my plans of not working and just taking care of the baby. At the same time, I knew that the paperwork in my office was piling up and that at this rate, I’d have to look for another Beta. Since Brooke left, there’s been calm in my house. My husband came to me each night, I didn’t have to worry about sharing him with another woman now.
Sighing, I made my way towards my office. My heels clicked against the polished marble floor. The corridor looked longer than today and I knew I was just tired... and also it could be one of the pregnancy symptoms. The corridor was lined with portraits of Moon Whisper’s Past Lycan Kings and Queens. Their eyes seemed to follow me, judging, questioning my right to be there.
Of all the rulers on the wall, it was only the Grand Lycan’s Queen’s picture that was missing and it was because she committed suicide. Taking your life in this part of our world is a great crime, so I understand perfectly why her picture wasn’t displayed.
Suddenly, the corridor seemed to tilt. My vision saw the corridor blurred into a collection of colours. I staggered, my hand reaching for the wall next to me for support. For a heart-rending moment, I feared that I would fall, and my other hand instinctively moved to protect my belly.
"Steady, Selene," I whispered to myself, closing my eyes and taking deep breaths. It was all tiredness. If I rest at least for the next four hours, my energy will be restored. When I opened my eyes again, I blinked in confusion. I was standing in front of my office door, with my hand on the knob.
I frowned, looking back down the corridor. It wasn’t possible. A few minutes ago, I was far from my office, how did I get here? "How did I...?" I muttered, trailing off. The dizziness had vanished as quickly as it had come, leaving me feeling disoriented and uneasy.
Shaking my head, I pushed the door open. "It’s nothing, Selene. It’s just stress. When you rest which would be after you’re done with all the paperwork, you’ll be fine. I promise you. It’s nothing more,".
The familiar scent of leather and the heavy Pack Ledger as well as the Packhouse ledger greeted me when I entered. Stacks of papers cluttered on my desk, evidence of the work that had piled up in my absence. With everything that had happened these few days, I wasn’t even thinking about anything. Sighing, I walked up to my chair and settled into it as I began to sort through the documents, looking for the best one to start with first.
The clock ticked as I immersed myself in reports. The only sound in the room was the big, antique clock I had seen in a flea market, the sound of my fingers typing over the keyboard and the occasional scratch of my pen or the rustle of paper.
After about forty-five minutes, I felt pressed. I wanted to pee so badly and at the same time, I didn’t want to stray too far from my office before I got distracted. I sighed, wishing I had a toilet in the office here but there was none. Hissing, I pushed back from my desk and rushed towards the door with every intention of a quick trip to the bathroom.
But as I walked past my table, an odd sensation washed over me.
It started as a tingling in my fingertips, spreading rapidly up my arms and throughout my body. The room seemed to tilt and spin forcing me to grab the edge of my desk for support. My legs buckled beneath me as I crumpled to the floor with a soft cry.
"What’s happening?" I gasped my heart racing. The plush carpet beneath my cheek grounded me, and the dizziness began to subside after a few moments.
Mustering the courage and strength, I pushed myself onto my hands and knees. Slowly, carefully, I started to rise but as soon as I was upright, the strange sensation returned, stronger than the first.
This time, it was accompanied by a warm, wet feeling on my upper lip. I raised a trembling hand to my face, my fingers touched something wet. When I looked at it, it was blood. Blood dripped steadily from my nose, spattering onto the crem-colored carpet.
"Some...body..." I spluttered as I coughed up blood falling to the ground. "H...Help me!" I said in a whisper. My body writhed with pain as I tried to crawl to the door to get someone’s attention. I couldn’t die like this... not after everything. Didn’t that strange woman promise that I would die during childbirth? What was happening?
Fear gripped my heart as I continued at a snail’s speed to the door. My mind raced, trying to make sense of what was happening to me. Was this normal for pregnancy? But I didn’t experience it with the girls and I’ve never heard of anything like this. Could it be something more? Nora’s threats echoed in my ears, making me shudder.
It can’t be... I didn’t take anything from her or even food. I’ve not had any physical contact with her during my stay on the order day, so where was this coming from? As I remained on the ground, one hand pressed on my bleeding nose to stop the bleeding and the other protectively cradling my belly. The door to my office swung open.
Kragen strode in, his tall frame filling the doorway. I sighed in relief as soon as I saw him. His eyes were fixed on some documents he was holding. "Selene, I wanted to discuss the..." he looked up and the words died on his lips as he took in the scene before him. "By the moon, what happened?"
I looked up at him, my eyes wide with fear and confusion. "Kragen," I said, my voice muffled by my hand. "I don’t know what’s wrong with me,".
In an instant, Kragen was by my side, kneeling next to me as he lifted me and tried to plop me on the chair nearby. His usually stern face was etched with concern as he gently pulled my hand away from my face examining the blood.
"How long has this been going on for?’ he asked, his voice low and urgent,".
I shook my head slightly. "Just now, but earlier in earlier in the hallway, I felt dizzy and then I was suddenly at my office door without knowing how I got there,".
Kragen’s brows furrowed. "Have you eaten today? Are you getting enough rest?"
" Yes," I’ve been taking care of myself," I insisted. "This isn’t normal, Kragen, something’s wrong,".
He nodded gravely reaching into his pocket for a handkerchief and pressing it gently to my nose. "We need to get you to the pack doctor. Can you stand? Should I call Noah?"
"No!" I shook my head "I don’t want anyone to know about this. It could be nothing. Let’s just act normal and go to the pack doctor, okay?"
"Alright!" he nodded "But can you stand?"
I hesitated, remembering my earlier attempts. "I...I’m not sure. Every time I try to get up, it gets worse,".
Kragen’s jaw tightened. "Alright then, let’s not take any chances,". Without another word, he scooped me into his arms, cradling me against his chest as if I weighed nothing. As he carried me out of the office, I could feel consciousness slowly slipping away from it.
Since we wanted to avoid the servants and the soldiers, Kragen simply disappeared and appeared in front of the Pack doctor’s house. He shouldered the door open without breaking stride, startling the elderly man who was brewing something at his workbench.
"Doctor, please help us," he barked "Luna Selene needs your attention immediately.
The doctor’s eyes widened as he took in my bloodied face and Kragen’s grim expression. Without wasting time, he rose to his feet and dashed into a bigger room, hurrying to clear a bed. When one of the beds was clean, he asked Kragen to set me down there.
I tried to keep my eyes open but slowly, the darkness swallowed me.
