Chapter 116: We have to save her

Tristan’s POV

I walked out in the opposite direction to meet up with Aven and Damon. We walked to the basketball court, which had always been our best place in the school.

"Here he comes, we thought that you would never be done with literature classes today," Damon called out, as he threw the basketball he had in his hand to the floor.

Aven followed Damon’s eyes towards me. "Maybe classes took longer, or their boring teacher refused to leave the class," Aven added.

"What if that wasn’t the case? Maybe I was busy with something far more important," I said

"Like what? Like being the best literature student," Damon joked.

"Mel was rushed to the hospital last night. She had attempted suicide. Aria has decided to go visit her alone," I blurted, changing the conversation, and suddenly their faces turned grave.

"How did you let that happen?" Aven asked, tension crawling in every word.

"Ari being herself didn’t want me to babysit her. Moreover, I feel she is still pissed with what happened in maths class yesterday," I stated.

"I wonder what had made Mel go that far as to want to take her own life," Damon said, shaking his head sideways in utter disbelief.

"Somethings happen in this academy that we aren’t aware of. Maybe she has become the next target, just like Aria was, but she isn’t as strong as Aria," I said, taking the basketball from Damon’s hands and tossing it on the floor.

The ball bounced on the court with a dull thud, the sound echoing against the empty court.

Damon caught it mid-air, spun it on his finger, and then shot it through the hoop with unnecessary flair.

"That’s cool," I praised, noting his prowess in the game. Damon was, after all, the academy’s best basketball player.

He nodded at me, flexing his arm. "I swear, you talk about Ari like she’s made of iron," Damon muttered, wiping his palms on his jeans.

"Strong, yeah. But even iron breaks if you keep striking it."

Aven folded his arms, his expression as unreadable as always. "Mel’s case proves that. Whatever is happening in this school is bigger than just ’petty bullying.’ And if Aria’s involved, we can’t afford to look the other way anymore."

"She has always had her own way of handling her bullies; maybe you two should learn to trust her more," I stated calmly.

They looked at each other and then back at me, and a moment of silence befell us.

"Aria won’t even let me walk her to the hospital," I muttered, frustration lacing every word, breaking the silence.

"She thinks it’s about control, but she doesn’t get it. I can feel when something’s wrong with her, and it hurts. It’s not just some game anymore."

Aven’s gaze sharpened. "You speak as if you are the only one who feels that way. Although I wanted to reject her at first because I didn’t feel she was worth it, I can’t do that anymore; the thought of doing it breaks me."

We had earlier wanted to joke with Aria’s feelings and do away with her because we felt much more superior to her, and of course, would need stronger wolves for a luna.

But I changed my mind, hoping the others wouldn’t, because I wanted her all to myself. However, I guess they, too, wouldn’t let her go.

Damon dribbled the ball absentmindedly, his jaw tight. "You’re both forgetting something. Ari’s stubbornness isn’t a weakness. She’s a strong one, can’t place what she is yet, but she is distinct, with a distinct scent."

Damon just buttressed what I’ve been thinking. Something about Aria seems more potent than she appears, and she seems to be hiding her true strength.

I sighed, pressing my palms against the back of my neck. "Exactly my point."

The words had barely left my lips when a searing jolt ripped through my chest. It wasn’t pain, no, it was worse. A sharp, magnetic pull that only felt like hers. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Aven cursed under his breath. "Did you..."

"Feel that?" Damon finished for him, his face paling. The basketball slipped from his fingers and rolled across the court.

My heart slammed against my ribs. Trevor, my wolf, surged forward with a growl. "She is in danger; we have to save her."

Without another word, the three of us bolted, instincts driving our feet faster than we thought. We followed her scent, leading us outside the academic grounds and into the forest surrounding the academy.

Branches whipped past us, and yet we sped. My heart kept banging out of my chest. "I’ll deal with any bastard who dares to touch my mate," I muttered under my breath.

Then we heard it, snarls, heavy thuds, the sound of flesh colliding with flesh.

They were wolves, three hulking wolves circled her, all of them students by their scent, their eyes gleaming with malice.

But they weren’t big enough to warrant Trevor taking over.

Aria stood her ground, her chest heaving, her movements swift, although not too fast.

If I stayed a little longer, she could have tackled them, but my patience was running out, and I didn’t want to take chances after hearing what came out of their mouth.

And with one swift movement, we attacked, landing defining blows and kicks on each of them, and they fell to the ground.

The forest fell silent except for the ragged sound of Aria’s breathing.

She pushed herself up, brushing dirt from her arm. She looked unscathed, and I was silently happy, although I was very displeased with her defiance.

And for a moment, her eyes flickered with something I hadn’t seen before, relief. "Thank you," she muttered, though her voice shook just slightly. "For coming to my rescue."

She drew in ragged breaths like she had been running a long mile.

Damon arched a brow, the corner of his mouth twitching as though he wanted to grin but resisted. Aven only gave a slow nod, as though he’d been waiting for those words.

I just wanted to yell at her for being too stubborn. What if she had been hurt? But I steadied my voice in order not to come out too aggressively.

I told you that you don’t have to go there alone, it’s not safe yet. Tracy’s friends aren’t happy; therefore, you should tread carefully."

She just looked at me, refusing to utter a word.

Aven threw his own words at her, Damon too. It was beginning to look like a scolding event.

"We are going to head to the hospital with you, so brace yourself to be our baby for the coming weeks," Aven added.

"I’m only going with Tristan," she revolted.

Although she had thanked us for coming to her rescue, I noticed she still wanted some apology from the two of them, or perhaps there’s another reason why she refused to go with them.
