Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 36: Intriguing Mystery
The procedure was way too simple for ending someone’s life. The announcer reads out the name of the person as he or she is dragged in. By that time, the person has either been drugged or tortured to the point where he or she can no longer resist. Nothing dramatic like a shot to the head would take place; instead, the executioner would use a cleaner and easier method of injecting a lethal substance into the veins of the person. It was a method that the cleaners truly approved of compared to other methods involving bloodshed.
Over the years, with the use of money and influence from the Alnault family, keeping the disappearance of people under wraps felt effortless. As the session was approaching its end, my phone started vibrating where it was placed close to my hand on the table. The name of my loyal maid appeared on the screen. If she was calling me, it had to be something urgent.
“What is it?” I asked when the line connected.
“Master...the thing is...” Jenna spoke through the phone hesitantly.
“What is it?” I asked again while hoping that she would just get to the point.
Jenna had been with me since I was young. She is around my mother’s age because they were also best friends. Although I didn’t know what was going on at the time, I was told that she was always with my mother and had taken care of her through her difficult pregnancy. After that, she stuck around as a maid to take care of me as well. After my mother’s mental condition started to deteriorate and she needed professional care, Jenna decided to focus on taking care of me instead and ended up working wherever I ended up.
“Lady Diana is waiting for you to return,” she stated simply.
Just like everyone else, Jenna was still under the impression that I had married the perfect first daughter of the Alnault family, Diana Alnault. Since there was no need to complicate things further for any of us, I decided to just leave things the way they were as we both acted our parts.
“Tell her to go to sleep. I’m not going to make it back any time soon,” I replied.
“I already told her that. She’s refusing to go to bed, and she also hasn’t had dinner. It’s already so late...” she dutifully reported while not hesitating to express her worries.
“Then tell her to eat. What is she waiting for?” I replied while feeling slightly irritated.
“I already did but she told me that she wants to have dinner with her husband,” Jenna said with desperation in her voice.
Husband?
Being referred to as someone’s ‘husband’ didn’t sit well with me. The word had a strange ring to it and made my skin crawl in a way that I couldn’t understand or explain. Getting married and having a wife wasn’t something that I had planned for my life. Marriage and building a happy family were things that Anthony was supposed to do as part of his role as the heir to the family. As far as I was aware, it wasn’t part of my role or job description. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
At the same time, I never thought that there would be a day when someone would be waiting for me to return home. Even though, I knew well enough what Dahlia wanted from me and my return. Her request for her ridiculous freedom still felt fresh in my mind and so was the feel of her soft body beneath mine as I trapped her between my body and the bed.
Dahlia Alnault.
If there was a name that my executioners remember well, it would be her name. The name that had appeared on the execution list more than a few times before being removed. My eyes narrowed as I recalled the way she smiled flawlessly while wearing a white wedding dress. I’ve had my very fair share of beautiful women before, but I had to admit that Dahlia dressed in her wedding dress was truly a sight to behold.
Rumors about the two twin sisters resembling each other so much that no one could tell them apart were pretty much true. Just like her beauty rivaled that of her elder sisters, so did her fame. No one in the social circle could truthfully claim that they have never heard of Dahlia. It didn’t matter whether they liked her or despised her, the fact was that Dahlia captured everyone’s attention. Everyone knew about Dahlia, yet no one truly knew anything about her.
The twin sisters were always in the spotlight; however, for very different reasons. The perfect Diana was always there to be praised. Everything she does was doted on as if everything she touches would turn into gold. Given her family background and the full backing that she has from her family and even the King, Diana was the most perfect girl and then woman in high society. Her engagement to Anthony propelled the two of them further into the spotlight.
For years, no one recognized or paid any attention to Dahlia. She was just Diana’s younger sister. She grew up in Diana’s shadow and soon enough everyone forgot about her. That was until the two became teenagers. The many shocking incidents were laid down to rest as nothing but rumors; however, people’s attention started to focus on Dahlia. With the rumors came public attention which only fueled more rumors.
Even in the underworld, where I try to stay away from every gossip and rumor in society, I couldn’t help but hear of her. At first, I paid absolutely no attention to it; however, as time passed by, I began to wonder just how much of those rumors about Dahlia were true and how much was simply the result of people’s twisted imagination.
I had never believed in anything like fate before in my entire life and that was simply because I didn’t think that anything could conveniently be blamed for the uncountable misfortunes that I’ve had to face in my life. My belief may have been shaken a little when I was suddenly summoned by my father, the head of the Vulkan family. Being summoned by him wasn’t rare, but receiving a direct phone call from him out of the blue told me that something wasn’t right.
