Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 284: Surprising Turn
It was a very random thought but I found myself wanting to buy some desserts to share with Brandon. It just felt like the perfect treat that we could enjoy together after breaking the good news. It also felt too long since the last time that I had something from this bakery. Instead of the car coming to the stop just as I had ordered, Zain continued driving without stopping or slowing down.
“Didn’t you hear what I just said? I want to make a stop here, can you park over there in front?” I asked as I started feeling confused.
Something felt amiss and I began wondering what was wrong with Zain. It was then that I realized that Zain had not spoken a word since I entered the car, and I had not seen his face since he had not turned around to look my way. Many gruesome scenarios appeared in my mind while I actively tried to tell myself to remain calm.
“I’m not your driver and we will not be making a stop based on your request,” a voice replied coldly.
The voice clearly did not belong to Zain and there was no way that Zain would speak to me in such a manner. I wasn’t sure what to feel but that cold voice clearly reassured me and drove away all of my fears.
“You came to pick me up?” I asked as I scooted forward in my seat before placing my hand on the back of the driver’s seat and leaning forward.
Just as I had expected and known, the owner of the voice belonged to none other than Brandon. Although I had no idea why, it seemed that Bradon had taken Zain’s place to pick me up. I pulled on the seat to bring myself forward so that I could stare at the side of his face. Brandon’s beautiful blue eyes glanced my way momentarily as he grinned before his gaze returned to focus on the road ahead.
“I just want to stop by that bakery over there. Honestly, they have the best fruit tarts and cake in town, and I thought that I could share them with you when I get back,” I said brightly.
“You seem to be in a good mood...” Brandon said observantly.
“I am in a good mood,” I replied before flashing him a smile.
I bet he had no idea just how on top of the world I was feeling right at that moment. It had been a very long while since everything seemed like it was going my way.
“Are you sure you don’t want the fruit tarts?” I asked again before I began pouting playfully.
“Are they good enough for us to drive back for them?” He asked without much interest. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
“Fine. I’ll just get them another day...” I said with resignation after deciding to completely give up on the idea.
The car suddenly jerked as we took a sudden U-turn. I dug my fingers into the back of the driver’s seat as I tried my best to hold on.
“What are you doing?” I exclaimed in my shock.
“I thought you wanted to go back to get those tarts?” He replied like it was supposed to be obvious.
“Aha...” I murmured at a loss for words.
In the end, we ended up at the bakery just as I wanted.
“You can just wait for me here in the car,” I told Bradon as I began making my way out.
To my surprise Bradon also got out of the car to accompany me. Although the bakery was famous to a certain degree, it was small and had never expanded beyond its original location. After placing my order, I found myself standing very close to Bradon in the limited space of the bakery as we waited for our order.
“Do you come here often?” He asked softly for my side.
His sudden unexpected question took me by surprise because I didn’t think that he would be interested in something so trivial.
“I used to come here quite often when I was younger, and after that I got my maids to come here to pick up my order from time to time...” I replied without looking his way.
Our conversation was short-lived. Just as suddenly as he had started it, our conversation died and instant death as well. While I was wondering what I should say to him, I caught Bradon staring at the cakes on display.
“Do you want to get some cake? They really look quite pretty don’t they?” I asked as I found myself also admiring the beautifully decorated cakes on display.
“Do you like the cakes here?” He asked without looking my way.
“Their tarts are the best for sure, but I actually like pretty much everything from this place. The cakes will come in nothing short of second place after the tarts. Unlike the other bakeries where the cake just looks pretty, the cakes here taste very awesome,” I confirmed.
Now that I think about it, I don’t remember the last time that I bought cake from this place. Before we could continue our conversation, the staff came back with our order.
“We should head back,” Bradon said as he took the bag of pastries from the staff’s hand and gestured towards the door.
While on the way to the car, I couldn’t stop wondering why Bradon suddenly taken Zain’s place to pick me up from the palace. Not to talk about the little getaway to the bakery was something so unexpected and random.
Was he worried about me or did he need something?
...
“I agreed to help the prince out with his plan,” I announced the moment that we were alone in the mansion.
I hadn’t realized up until that point that I have been bottling everything in. The moment that those words left my mouth, I felt slightly proud of myself for being able to speak so directly to Bradon about this issue. I wasn’t sure what his reaction would be, but I was certain that he wasn’t going to be a big fan of my decision. The way his blue eyes stared at me before they glazed over like winter sweeping over a lake and freezing its surface into ice told me that he wasn’t at all impressed with my decision. Although I knew that he would feel this way, I still felt that I had made the right decision in supporting the prince.
