Chapter 283: Our Second Deal

True to the prince’s words of speculation, I couldn’t come up with a single thing about the society that we lived in that was beneficial to the country’s future or for the people in general. Having been on the receiving end of the twisted madness of the society, I surely struggle to see the merits in all of it.

“See? You can’t really come up with anything, can you?” He guessed quite correctly while sounding quite amused.

Desmond grinned at me and he seemed satisfied that I was unable to answer his question.

“What is so great about the country being run by the royal family and the nobles? Even if our country is democratic, it is only democratic in name only. You should know that best with your father currently running in the election with full backing from the King and also the Vulcan family,” Desmond said before showing me a knowing smile.

Even though it is almost certain that the election will be postponed by the King’s death, it would come to no surprise that my father would win the election at the end of the day. That would be the case unless something were to happen. I narrowed my eyes as I realized once again that time was really running out.

“How can the country possibly progress forward given how corrupted everyone at the top is? Surely, you’re more than aware of all that your father has done, and I can assure you that other noble families are not at all different,” Desmond reminded me harshly .

That time in the past when he stepped in to solve one of my father’s fraud and corruption scandal quickly came to mind. My eyes widened when an idea suddenly popped into my head.

“You want to get rid of them?” I asked to confirm my suspicion.

If he wanted to get rid of the corrupted nobles and their families at the top, then it was clear that our objectives were very aligned because my family was definitely one of them.

“Isn’t that what you’re here to ask me to do? I’m just expanding on your plan and giving more meaning to it,” he said with a satisfied grin.

I nodded my head slightly before letting out a sigh of relief. Desmond smiled at me again but that smile soon died on his lips.

“Unlike you though, I have more than just personal revenge to think of,” Desmond said with a shrug of his shoulders.

It was true that my plan to get back at my parents for what they have done appeared so small and insignificant compared to his plan to remodel the governance of the entire country.

“Well, I’m just an ordinary person with feelings and I’m also not the prince of this country,” I pointed out in my own defense before flashing him a smile.

I knew that Desmond wasn’t saying that to offend me but to let me know that he had taken note of my real objective. Even back in the days, he really did do his best to protect me.

“Well then, do we have a deal?” I asked.

It felt like a very long journey, and I also knew that the path ahead wouldn’t be a smooth one even with Desmond’s full support. I realized that my plan would only come to fruition if his larger scale plan became successful and that meant that the road ahead was going to be filled with obstacles for us to deal with. Even with that in mind, I was so optimistic at that moment that we would be able to overcome everything that came our way.

The future had never felt so bright and alluring as it did in that moment, and I prayed that there would be even more hope for the people of this country. Desmond smiled at me as he watched me stand up for my seat and extend a hand his way.

“Aren’t we sealing our deal with a kiss?” He asked with a mischievous smirk, and I was reminded of how we sealed our deal many years ago.

“I’ll stick to a handshake, thank you,” I replied as I kept my hand extended.

Desmond laughed before he took my hand and shook it firmly.

“We shall talk more in detail about our plan, but for now, let us all prepare for the greatest funeral of all,” Desmond said with a look of determination.

...

“Thank you for escorting me out,” I told the palace staff who followed me every step of the way to the front of the palace.

“You are welcome,” she replied politely.

Zain was supposed to pick me up but I couldn’t see the car in sight. Just when I took out my phone with a thought of calling him, I saw the car taking a turn and approaching my way.

“Thank you for picking me up,” I said the moment that I got into the back of the car.

The meeting that I had with Desmond surely kept me on my feet and on the edge of my seat. Although I didn’t realize it during the time that we were talking, our conversation ended up draining so much energy for me and I felt quite tired. Now that I was in the car, I felt like I could relax just a little and appreciate the progress that I have made. Very quickly my thoughts traveled to Bradon and I wondered what he was doing.

Thankfully, he allowed me to meet the prince, and because of that, I had very good news to share with him when I got back to the mansion. Zain drove off without replying to me, and I didn’t mind the silence. I found myself staring at my phone screen while I hesitated whether or not I should give Bradon a call. After seeing the deal with the prince that would definitely work in my favor, it felt like I was itching to share the good news with someone else and Bradon was the one who came instantly to mind. When we drove past the shopping district, a bakery that I have liked for a very long time caught my eye.

“Can we make a brief stop here? I want to buy something,” I told Zain as I stared out at the bakery.
