Chapter 269: Scandalous

Aside from those vile comments, there were also countless comments expressing how well suited we appeared for each other. I wasn’t sure which types of comments made me cringe more inside, and I wondered what kind of face these people would make when they found out that none of the things that they saw were true.

I wasn’t dating the prince, in fact, I haven’t even seen or spoken to him in almost a month since the last time that we saw each other at the event. So far my shameless parents were over the moon excited ever since the photos of the prince and me kissing went public. The two of them clearly enjoyed the attention and I could imagine them boasting to the other nobles and their business partners about my relationship with the prince and how much he seemed to favor me. That all happened before they started realizing that the prince no longer called on me, and that I no longer left the house to meet the prince at the palace.

“What is wrong?” My father asked with a frown between his brows as he glared at me with narrowed eyes.

I guess that after all the boasting that they had done that their daughter might end up marrying the prince, everything seemed to blow up in their faces now that I was no longer seeing the prince.

“Nothing is wrong,” I replied casually without any further comments.

“If nothing is wrong, then why isn’t the prince inviting you to the palace? Why are you still sitting here, and why are you not in the palace with the prince?” My mother asked with clear concern.

Diana looked my way but decided to keep her silence as she waited to see how things would unfold. I found it quite entertaining that the two of them were acting like it was the end of the world because I didn’t go out on dates with the prince. The harsh words of rejection that I said to Desmond still rang in my ears and sometimes I wondered if I had been too harsh on him. To be honest, I knew that I couldn’t really blame him for what he did. Although he did kiss me without asking me for permission, he did already apologize for it.

Perhaps I was the one who was acting out of line because I was so consumed by my own confusion and frustration regarding my unrequited love for Anthony. Desmond’s sharp and direct words felt like rubbing salt into my wounds, and that’s why I ended up lashing out at him. Surprisingly, Desmond seemed to have taken my words to heart and have not reached out to me again since that day. His absolute silence surprised me because I had expected him to try to contact me.

There were times when I wasn’t sure what I preferred. Although I knew that I wasn’t in love with him, I had to admit that I was quite fond of him and his attention. We had grown closer and I could see him as a good friend and valuable ally. Sometimes I would find myself thinking of him and wondering what he was doing. Then there were times when I had to admit to myself that sometimes I felt lonely without his company and I started worrying if he was doing fine. Of course, I couldn’t tell anyone about that.

“Listen carefully, because I’m only going to say this once. The Prince and I are not dating and that kiss was a mistake. Everything that’s going around in the news is complete bullshit,” I announced clearly and firmly as my eyes traveled from my father to my mother and then back again to ensure that they understood. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

“What are you saying? You are dating the prince,” my mother managed to say after recovering from her apparent shock.

It was clear they were stunned at my sudden announcement and it was also clear that they were refusing to accept the truth.

“There was never anything between us in the very first place, and even if they were, I had already broken things off with the prince. I told him that I don’t wish to speak to him or see him ever again, and that is why I am staying home and not going to the palace to meet him,” I explained although I wondered why I was explaining something that was so obvious.

“Are you crazy? Have you completely lost your mind? Why did you do that? How could you even dream of saying those words to the prince!” My father yelled at me openly as he seemed to seethe with anger.

“I just told him what I honestly thought. I don’t like him that way, and we’re not dating!” I yelled back at my father.

“Take it back right now! And since when does it matter what you think? Why don’t you think about me, your mother, and our family before you do anything so retarded? You are in love with the prince!” My father yelled even louder as he stood up from the chair and glared at me.

“I didn’t do anything wrong...” I muttered emotionlessly before looking away.

At that moment I decided to block everything out because I no longer cared what they had to say. No matter how much they yelled at me and no matter what they said, I had already made up my mind that I would not be used as a political tool for my family to gain power. It was already bad enough that they were marrying my sister off in an arranged marriage for the sake of securing funding, I would rather be damned rather than let them marry me off too.I smirked while I thought to myself that they should have realized that there was no way that the king would allow the prince to marry me even if that was what Desmond wanted.

“Call the prince right now! Call him and apologize. Tell him that you take everything back and that you want to go on a date with him,” my father commanded.

“I refuse,” I replied in short.
