Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 270: Exposed Crime
Before they could say anything else I stood up from my seat and ran out of the living room.
“Dahlia, wait!” I heard Diana calling after me and then I heard her footsteps as she ran after me.
By the time that we both reached my bedroom, I felt like I needed to cry it all out so that I could deal with all the stress and the pressure of the situation that had built up inside of me. It felt like someone had wrapped their hands around my neck and had started squeezing it. Diana entered the room after me and pulled me into her arms right away. She must have realized that I needed comforting without me needing to voice it.
“I told you that he is interested in you. You should have listened to your sister...” Diana said before letting out a giggle as she continued stroking my back.
“Shut up...” I muttered as I buried my face into her hair and held her tightly.
“Did you have a fight with him?” Diana asked after a moment of silence.
“No, we didn’t fight. At least, I didn’t think we did...” I replied in a whisper.
“Then, why do you look so upset? Did he do something to hurt you?” Diana asked.
“He didn’t do anything,” I replied quite honestly.
“Tell me, how did all of this come about? Did you guys get into an argument? Why did you suddenly break things off with the prince?” Diana asked as she stared deeply into my eyes.
Unlike the other people, I could feel that Diana was genuinely concerned about me. Unlike my parents who cared only about their social standing and the name of our family, my sister cared about me as a person. She cared about my feelings and above all else, I could feel her anger simmering just beneath the surface when she thought that the prince might have hurt me in some way.
“He told me that he liked me, but I didn’t return his feelings. Anyways, because of that, I thought that we shouldn’t see each other anymore,” I replied with a partially true answer.
I couldn’t come out and tell my sister that I was also scared that the prince might find out that the person that I was in love with was actually Anthony.
“That’s a relief to hear, I guess. If he ever does anything to hurt you, I’m going to make him pay and I don’t know if he’s the crown prince...” Diana said darkly and I could tell that she was more than serious.
“It’s not what you think. Prince Desmond is actually a very great person. If anyone has been doing the hurting, then it would probably be me and not him,” I told her as I had to admit to myself that the prince was indeed an impressive man.
“I guess it’s good enough that he’s willing to leave you alone after you requested it,” Diana said before she grinned at me.
“I just feel so tired about all this. I wish that everyone, especially our parents, would just leave me alone,” I complained openly before I heaved a loud sigh.
My sister pulled me into her embrace again, and I hugged her back naturally. I let her presence and the comfort of her arms give me strength. At that moment, it felt like I didn’t need anything as long as I had my understanding sister by my side. Although I regretted that I couldn’t tell her the truth about everything, I was satisfied with the fact that I have tried my best to remain honest with her. I thought that my days would become more peaceful now that I didn’t have to deal with Prince Desmond; however, I soon found out that I was quite wrong.
One evening father returned back home with an evidently rotten mood. After marching into the living room, he glared at the three of us before yelling to express his anger. My mother was shocked at his sudden outburst, while I had to say that I was used to being on the receiving end of his violent episodes.
“Have you seen the news?” He asked as if we were supposed to understand what he was referring to.
“No, I haven’t seen anything. Is there something important in the news?” My mother asked in a shaky voice.
I sat next to Diana with my mouth clamped shut as I wondered what was going on. My father turned on the television and opened the news channel. After listening for a short while, my mother gasped in shock as her hands flew to cover her mouth. It was then that I understood that an unfavorable change was happening to one of our major family’s businesses.
“How can something like this happen?” My mother asked cluelessly.
I continued listening to the news reporter reporting on the sudden detection of corruption in one of the Ministries with close ties to our family. Not surprisingly, the project where the corruption took place had clear relations with our family’s business.
“Is this true?” My mother asked, although I thought that she should have already figured it out by that point that there was no way that her husband could be guilt-free.
The way my father reacted told me that it was true. I could feel that he was angry because someone had caught on to his unethical dealings. It felt like another evidence that his greed was endless. Even with the monetary support that we got from Anthony’s family, it seemed like it wasn’t enough for him and he still had to find other ways to channel money.
“I can’t believe they are blaming us for all of this,” my father said angrily.
This wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t so corrupted...
“What is going to happen now?” My mother asked with clear worry.
I was actually quite curious about what was going to happen and how my father was going to handle this. Although my family was in trouble, I had to say that I felt a jolt of excitement as I enjoyed seeing my father struggling.
