Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 247: Budding Feelings
I knew that I had to come up with an explanation so that Dahlia wouldn’t figure out that this woman is actually my real mother. If she found out about my mother’s real identity then she would also figure out that I am not Anthony.
I cursed silently inside my head because I wasn’t sure how to bring the situation under control. I had seen my mother lose her temper before and I knew just how bad it could get. She could easily turn into a crazy woman with no control over her emotions and her actions in her fit of rage, and I didn’t want that to happen here right in front of Dahlia. It was bad enough that she had to hear everything already.
“What is going on? Why are you being so loud when i’m trying to take some rest?”
A lazy and sleepy sounding voice suddenly asked from the direction of the bed. I felt my heart skip a beat in my chest as I slowly turned my head in the direction where the voice came from. I saw Dahlia sitting up on the bed and looking our way with a confused and slightly annoyed look on her face.
My mother must have thought that she had just woken up while I knew the truth that she had just decided to intervene in our conversation.
“Diana, are you feeling better? I’m sorry that we were so loud. But we’re about to leave now,” I quickly told her as a gesture from my mother to leave the room.
Instead of replying to me, Dahlia shifted her attention to my mother and began staring at her intensely.
“Who are you and why are you talking to Anthony in that way?” Dahlia asked as she cocked her head slightly to the side.
Just like me my mother wasn’t supposed to exist in her world, her life as Alfred’s hidden mistress also meant that her identity had to be hidden. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
“She’s just a maid. She’s my nanny. You don’t need to pay her any attention, Diana. I’m sorry for the disturbance. We will leave now, so you should get some more rest,” I said kindly in an attempt to cover up everything.
The only saving grace in the situation was the fact that my mother did not reply to Dahlia’s question and decided to let me do the talking. Although I knew that she wasn’t doing this for my sake but she was merely following father’s instruction and keeping his interest in mind, I still felt extremely thankful.
“I don’t know who you are or who you think you are. You might be his nanny or maybe you raised him, but I still find it hard to imagine that you could talk to your master that way. Perhaps you have simply forgotten your place, or perhaps you simply do not have a kind heart. In fact, it doesn’t matter who you are, but you shouldn’t talk to someone else that way. Especially when they are not at fault and not to blame,” Dahlia said slowly and clearly as she kept her eyes glued to my mother’s downcasted face.
I prayed desperately that my mother would not talk back to Dahlia. Hopefully, her words had reminded my mother of her place that she was supposed to be just a maid right now and speaking back wasn’t truly an option. Thankfully my mother continued to stay silent as she casted her eyes downwards obediently.
“It rained before and the weather is so hot and humid. Anthony was such a gentleman when he saved me when I fainted. I would have gotten hurt without his help and I truly appreciate him taking care of me and being by my side while the doctor tended to me. I understand that you might be worried about the success of this event held by the Vulkan family. However, if someone were to get hurt during the event, wouldn’t that also be the Vulkan family’s fault and responsibility? If you ask me it is much better to cancel or postpone the contest than to have everyone talk badly of your employer and about how poorly they treat their guests,” Dahlia continued to lecture my mother.
Dahlia sounded very prim and proper and I found that amusing despite the heavy seriousness of the situation. Everything that she said felt like something that I wanted to say but couldn’t. I couldn’t stop staring at her as i noticed and admired the brave valiant look in her eyes. It felt as if she was angry at my mother but I couldn’t understand why she was feeling that way.
“Of course, we will take proper care of you, Diana. Please don’t worry,” I replied while maintaining my role as anthony.
“You’ve already helped me enough. You’ve shown just how worried you are and how well you can take care of me,” she replied before showing me a small smile.
It was far from over because she turned over to glare at my mother once again. It seemed like there was more that Dahlia wanted to say.
“Tell me, don’t you think that it sucks to be forced to do something that you don’t want to do all for the sake of pleasing someone else that you may or may not care about? Do you even know how he feels? Do you even care?” she asked, although it was clear that she didn’t expect any kind of answer from my mother.
“I apologize in her place. So please don’t get any more upset...” I said as I tried my best to reassure her and calm her down.
Dahlia stared at me with blank eyes before letting out a soft sigh of resignation. It seemed like she was willing to finally let it all slide by as if nothing had happened. I felt like it was the perfect time for me to lead my mother out and escape. Just when I was about to escort my mother out of the room, Dahlia spoke up again.
“You’re really too nice, Antony...” she commented as she looked straight at me.
