Chapter 248: Silent Promise

I didn’t think that I was a nice person at all. If anything, I must be one of the most deceitful and selfish people out there because I’m always doing things for my own survival or just to get by. Even now, I was lying to her and putting on an act to shield my mother from blame. I didn’t even want to think what kind of face Dahlia would make if she were to find out the truth. Not wanting to lie to her any further, I simply put on one of my best smiles.

“You should leave now. I want to talk privately with my fiancé,” Dahlia ordered my mother before she smiled politely.

My mother stood up emotionlessly as if she was a robot, and without looking our way, she made her way out of the room. Once again I was left alone with Dahlia and I wondered what it was that she wanted to talk to me about.

“Why did you let her talk to you that way? I mean, she’s your nanny...but still...” Dahlia snapped at me and it was clear just how frustrated she was.

She bit on her lower lip as a troubled look appeared on her face. She looked restless as if she was debating with herself whether she should say anymore.

“That whole thing about the horse riding competition as well. You didn’t want to do any of that, right?” Dahlia asked rhetorically after she failed to stop herself from pressing me about the issue.

I wondered how she caught on to that. Perhaps she had somehow overheard the things that my father had said to me. Since I hadn’t replied to her, Dahlia decided to go on.

“It rained a lot before and the ground is very muddy, so it could be dangerous to ride, right? Anyways, I’m glad that the competition was canceled. Anthony, seriously...you’re too nice. If you don’t want to do something, you should just tell them. They will listen to you and what you want...because you’re Anthony...” Dahlia said before she made a grumpy face.

How I wished that things would be that simple. That I could just opt out from all the things that I didn’t want to do. Perhaps if I was really Anthony, I could have gotten away with it and have things done my way. The problem was, I wasn’t really Anthony.

“I’ll keep that in mind...” I replied in short.

“Well, shouldn’t you be thanking me for my help? Everything went exactly the way that I planned, right?” Dahlia said before letting out a giggle.

Her smile and the way that she laughs seem to light up the whole room and lighten the atmosphere around us. I remember being speechless as I stared back at her face. Admittingly, she was right and things did turn out the way that she had planned. However, I couldn’t ignore the risk that things might turn for the worse for her if someone managed to see through her act. When Dahlia continued smiling and giggling, I started to think that she was brave and daring. More than anything, I realized that she was kind and that she wouldn’t hesitate to extend a helping hand to those in need. That was probably the time when I started to notice her and admire her.

After that day, I found myself thinking about her often and sometimes I would look forward to seeing her and wondering when I would get to see her again. When it occurred to me that she might be doing this to repay the favor for when I covered for her the first time that we met, I felt a strange bond between us. Perhaps it was just me that felt it while she was absolutely ignorant of it. Perhaps she just felt obliged to return the favor from that time when I took the blame for her breaking the teacup that was one of the Vulkan family’s heirlooms. However, to me, it felt like an unspoken promise was made between us that we would continue to help each other out when the other was in need as long as we were "engaged".

**Back to the present - Dahlia’s Point of View**

Did I say something wrong just now?

That was the sense that I got from the way that Bradon was staring at me. I wondered what he hated so much about what I had just. As far as I could tell, I didn’t think that I had said anything wrong or offensive.

Or was it something that I didn’t say?

I suddenly felt so uncomfortable inside like my tummy was doing somersaults and my chest started to flutter, the longer that he stared at me with those captivating blue eyes of his.

“Won’t you kiss this man out of pity too?” he asked as he pulled me closer to him.

I was stunned as I looked up into his face at just how close we were. His eyes bore down into mine, and I could tell that he wasn’t joking.

He really wants me to kiss him? Right now?

“What are you...” I began asking but he never gave me the chance to complete my question.

Bradon’s hot lips captured mine along with the remaining words of my question. I had no idea what was running through his mind but I was overly aware of the bliss that I felt from feeling his lips moving against mine. His kiss was aggressive and devouring right from the start. I tried to pull my arm away from his grip but that only led him to pull my body harder against his. Bradon wrapped his arm around my back to hold me in place as he crushed his lips firmly against mine.

“Mhmm...” I made a sound that felt like something in between a protest and a pleasurable moan in my throat.

I had never expected him to kiss me this way after walking in on what had just transpired between his mother and me. It seemed like we argued, but it also felt like we didn’t really argue.
