Chapter 236: Your Turn to Listen

Her words sounded very familiar to my ears although I was sure that I haven’t met her before. Brenda went on with her complaints as I wondered when she would simply shut up. It was frankly quite amazing how much she had to say against her own son.

“I don’t understand why he doesn’t understand that everything he does wrong ends up being my fault. I’m the one who gets blamed for all his faults and shortcomings. They all say that it’s all because of me...” she said as she ground her teeth together in anger.

I stared at her as my smile faded from my lips. After having just met her for the first time, I quickly figured that there was nothing decent about this woman except for her extremely blunt and straightforward way of speaking. With each word, I could feel intensely dark emotions rising up inside of me as if she had the talent to flip all of my switches in all the wrong ways.

‘Why can’t you be perfect like Diana? If you don’t do this right, do you understand that your father is going to blame it on me? Why can’t you do this and behave like your sister for once!’

How many times have I heard something along these lines from my own mother?

If I had to be truthful, I’ve probably spent my entire childhood and teenage years hearing this from my mother. I could hear the sound of my mother’s hissing voice as she gave me hell for all the things that I did and didn’t do. Her voice in my head felt haunting but I’ve already learnt how to deal with it so that her words wouldn’t get to me anymore. No matter what, it seemed like I could never get anything right in her eyes. At first, I believed that she was completely right and that I was the one who was lacking. Her repetitive words drilled into me the fact that it was all my fault, that I wasn’t good enough, that I was the source of all her failures.

However...

“That’s not true!” I raised my voice without intending to.

Brenda’s mouth dropped open in shock as her eyes widened and focused on my face. It felt like for the first time in a while since she started her rant that she realized that I was still there. Honestly, despite all the things that she said being annoyingly spiteful and toxic, it had nothing to do with me and I could have kept silent and let it all slide by. Instead, I found myself gritting my teeth as I felt the flames of anger that had built up inside of me threatened to burst forth. I smirked when I thought that Brenda truly resembled my mother, and if that was the case, I knew exactly the right way to deal with people like her.

“Listen, mother-in-law dear...” I hissed through my teeth before smiling a smile that was sure not to reach my eyes.

Slowly, I stood up from my seat and approached her. The nurse tensed visibly where she was standing and that made me spare her a smile that I hoped looked reassuring. I didn’t mean to hurt Brenda with anything but words. People who were comfortable just saying whatever they pleased to whoever they pleased, about whoever they pleased, needed to be prepared to go through the same thing.

“I fear that I don’t quite understand all that you’ve been saying. I’m not so sure whether that is because what you’ve been saying makes absolutely no sense or simply because I do not have the mental capacity to understand how someone who calls herself a mother can say such vile things about her own son...” I said as I leaned forward to bring my face down to her level.

Brenda looked visibly disturbed by how close I was to her. The nurse made a move to approach us but I held up a hand in her direction to halt her in her steps.

“Don’t worry. All I will do is talk...just like how she’s been going on and on all this time...” I told the nurse without sparing a glance her way.

I kept my eyes trained on Brenda’s face as I stared deeply into her beautiful blue eyes. Her blonde lashes were long and they sure did remind me of Bradon. Had she had sweeter things to say about her only son, I was certain that I wouldn’t have felt such irritation to see the beauty of eyes reflected in her own.

“What are you doing to me?” she asked anxiously.

“Nothing at all. Just like you’ve been confiding in me about the frustrations that you have regarding your son, I would like to share with you what I happen to think on that topic,” I replied before smiling at her again.

Brenda looked extremely scared of me for some reason. At first, I had hoped that Bradon would return soon so that I could cease my roleplay as the perfect host; however, now I just prayed that there would be enough time for me to tell her all that I’ve got on my mind before my chest would explode from the pressure.

“You couldn’t stop talking about how Anthony is so perfect and how much you hope that your son would be just the same. Seriously, listen to me. Perfect? What does perfect even mean anyways? Anthony is great and all that but that doesn’t mean that Bradon cannot be great in his own way. People are unique. There is no reason why one person should be exactly like the other,” I started with a lecture of my own. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Bradon’s mother was stunned and I wondered if she was ready to have a mental breakdown. She looked surprised to find out that I had a mouth that I could put to good use. For a moment, I wondered if she honestly thought that she could be the only one to do the talking. If that was the case, she was about to find out just how mistaken she is about me.
