Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 235: Unappreciated Son
Since she stopped me from giving Bradon a call earlier, I began wondering if he even knew that his mother had arrived. Jenna seemed to know her very well but she was nowhere in sight to help ease my burden.
Was he even expecting her or is this just some random visit on her part?
“I would like to apologize to you earnestly for all the trouble that my foolish son has caused. He’s always been a stubborn and useless fool ever since he was young. He is selfish and never does what he is told. He always has a temper and never considers what is best for our family. It is a miracle that my husband chose to tolerate him for this long. My husband is so kind and so merciful...” she said as the lines between her brows deepened.
“I see...” I mumbled.
“If it weren’t for this cursed child, I’m sure that my husband would still be with me. I wouldn’t be abandoned like this. I always told him that he needed to do better. He needed to be smarter and work harder than his half brother...” she complained bitterly.
I realized that she was now comparing Bradon to Anthony. On top of that, I was already certain that she wasn’t joking when she openly criticized her son. I plastered a smile on my lips as I continued listening to her toxic complaints.
“If he had done all that, then I wouldn’t have to lose my husband. Do you understand what I’m saying?” she asked as her voice started to shake with emotions.
“Yes...” I replied, although I didn’t quite understand the point that she was trying to make at all.
When this woman referred to her husband, she must have meant the current head of the Vulkan family, Anthony’s and Bradon’s father. From what I had been told and from what I understood of the situation, technically that man was never her husband. He was nothing more than her lover and she was probably nothing more to him than one of his mistresses. Whether or not the pregnancy was planned, I wouldn’t have a way to find out and I didn’t very much care.
What I didn’t understand was why she seemed to be blaming her only son for her own misfortune?
“If Bradon is as smart, talented, bright, and diligent as Anthony, I am sure that we would get to live in the big house. I will be there in the big house where I belong. I will be living happily with my husband. He would come to see me everyday...” she continued with intense emotions.
I wasn’t sure what she wanted me to say and it did occur to me that she might just want to let it all out. All I had to do was listen until she ran out of steam. I retreated into my own mind as I reminded myself to be patient. I glanced over at the nurse standing behind Brenda. When our eyes met, she shook her head slightly at me and that was when I told myself that there must be something off about Brenda. I smiled politely as I forced my hands to relax on my lap.
I am supposed to be Diana now...
“He came to see me...” she said as she pressed her hands against her chest.
The look of intense yearning in her eyes told me that she was talking about her husband and not her son. The smile that graced her lips made her look so lively and a few years younger in an instant. However, it didn’t take long for her smile to completely vanish and the corners of her mouth to droop.
“At first I thought that he had come to take me to the big house with him just like he had promised. But no. Instead, he came to tell me that my stupid son had refused to comply with the royal orders that came from the prince. My husband...he yelled at me and told me that this is all my fault. Everything that Bradon does wrong is my fault!” she cried out as her face turned red.
“Please calm down,” I said slowly and clearly.
I debated with myself whether I should ask her to leave before she caused an even bigger scene. Although what she said had nothing whatsoever to do with me, her words didn’t sit well with me and had ruined my mood. It was hard for me to believe that a woman who once cared so much for her son would say these things.
“You must have been in trouble too when that happened, right? He brought shame to the Vulkan family name. You have no idea how angry my husband is at me because of him. What am I supposed to do now?” she whined and it looked like she was about to burst out crying.
“Maybe you should rest in one of the guest rooms until Bradon comes back,” I suggested to save myself from even more trouble.
I wondered if Bradon had to deal with this kind of speech all the time while he was still living with his mother. Even though no one told me what his family situation was like, I had a pretty decent guess. Nothing could have gone well for him given the fact that he is an illegitimate child of the Vulkan house. Whether his parents were once in love or not, I didn’t know. The almost-delirious woman sitting in front of me clearly believed that it was love; however, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if she had been manipulated and used. The only difference between her and his other mistresses was that she had the fortune or the misfortune to bear his child.
Alfred Vulkan, another man that I should not underestimate. Using women as his tools seemed like the norm to him. My eyes narrowed and that was when I felt like I’ve had more than enough.
“Why can’t he be perfect like Anthony? Why can’t he be perfect like that woman’s child? This is all his fault! My life wouldn’t be like this otherwise! Because of him, I lost everything that was mine!” she wailed.
