Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 237: Don’t Blame Him
“Stop blaming your son for all of your failures. Your failures are your own to bear. If something went wrong for you, then it was probably because of you. If your husband doesn’t think that you’re good enough, then you’re probably not good enough. Stop dragging your son into your misery and stop using him as an excuse for your failures,” I warned her, loud and clear.
“Stop...” she muttered as she refused to look me in the eye.
I couldn’t bring myself to stop even if I wanted to. The real problem was that I didn’t want to. Pointing out her faults and mistakes felt like the right thing to do and it also brought me a sense of satisfaction like I had never felt in a very long time.
“I don’t even want to imagine all the things he had to do against his will over the years just to appease you and your selfish lover and that family that you must worship. Just so that you can get your way and get what you want, he had to suffer for your sake every single step of the way!” I yelled at her without mercy.
“No...” she whispered breathlessly.
“Yes. I’m certain of it. He was coerced and forced into everything and it is all because of your selfishness. Even this sham of a marriage that he is in right now. Do you honestly think that he wanted to marry me? Of course, not! He was forced into this as well. He was forced to marry me against his will. He never wanted to marry me and be stuck with me in this mansion like this!” I continued as my voice grew louder and louder.
“Stop. This isn’t my fault. This is all his fault...this is all his fault!” she muttered before she ended up screaming.
“It’s not his fault. It has never been his fault and it can never be his fault. Oh, and in case you’re worried about pissing off the crown prince, there’s nothing to worry about on that end because I’ve already sorted everything out. Seriously, everyone has got to stop worrying about bringing this so-called shame to the family name when there is nothing but shame when your family just tries to use and abuse you day in and day out!” I argued passionately.
The silence that enveloped the room after I had let out all that I wanted to say felt so heavy and full of gloom. By that time, Brenda seemed to be in a very shakened state. Her nurse shot me a disapproving stare but didn’t dare say a word before she came and knelt down at Brenda’s side to observe her condition. I fully expected Brenda to yell back at me after all that I had said to her but that wasn’t how things played out between us.
“Stop! Don’t say anymore. I’m sorry, dear. This is all my fault. I promise I will talk to him and I’ll teach him better. I promise, so please...please don’t leave. I’m so scared....please don’t leave me alone...I’m so scared...” Brenda croaked out in a broken and strained voice as she lifted her hands up to cover her ears and the side of her face.
She kept on saying the same thing while her poor nurse stroked her back and whispered comforting words to her in an attempt to calm her down. I did expect some reaction from her but everything she said didn’t seem to make sense. It felt like she wasn’t even talking to me at all. There was a forlorn look in her eyes as she stared off into space as if she could see something that I couldn’t. It didn’t take me long to figure out that she must have been talking to Alfred, although he wasn’t anywhere in sight.
“Calm down. Focus on breathing. Maybe we should go home for the day? What do you say?” her nurse whispered to her in a sweet-sounding voice.
Despite saying those harsh words to her, I hadn’t expected for her to have a panic attack or a breakdown like that. I wasn’t sure if I fully understood what was happening to her but she looked like someone with a mental disorder of some sort at that moment. A flash of regret entered my mind as I wondered if I had been too harsh with her. If she was really ill then perhaps I was in the wrong for saying words that would aggravate her condition.
“What is wrong with her? Should we call for a doctor? Should I get someone to take her to the hospital?” I asked her nurse as I stared at Brenda with concern. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
“There’s no need for that right now. Please give us some space and I’ll try my best to calm her down,” the nurse replied.
Just when I thought that things had headed for the worst, the door to the room opened with a loud thudding sound. Relief washed over me when I expected that help had arrived. I felt blood drain from my face when I saw the person that had entered the room.
“Bradon...?” I mumbled his name in disbelief although I could see him so clearly.
It was Bradon in the flesh. As I watched him approach where we were, I wondered just how much of my conversation with his mother that he had overheard. His cold blue eyes landed on me before shifting to his mother for a moment. I felt a lump form in my throat and suddenly I was at a loss for words when his intense blue gaze returned to my face.
What am I suppose to say now?
“You’re back...” I whispered.
His mother had stopped wailing and whining when she laid eyes on him. To my surprise, it didn’t look like she was all that happy to see him. The situation had not developed in my favor at all. If Bradon had heard all those things that I said to his mother as I lectured her, I would undoubtedly be in very big trouble because there was no way that what I did was appropriate.
