Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 131: Sleeping Beauty
That was the plan that I had in mind until my eyes fell to his face, and I found myself staring at his long light blond eyelashes.
Were his lashes always this long?
Before I knew what I was doing, I had bent down a little to take a closer look at them. Seeing Bradon’s sleeping face felt like I had stumbled upon one of his hidden secrets. I wondered how he could look so innocent and harmless while he was sleeping. I knew that I should leave but if I moved, he might end up waking up. Regardless, I couldn’t stop staring at his sleeping face while taking in his closed eyelids, the long light blond lashes that framed his eyes, his perfectly straight nose, and the beautiful curve of his chin.
Everything about him looked so effortlessly attractive and even his hair seemed to sparkle in the morning light that leaked slightly into the bedroom. Before I fully considered what I was doing, my hand was already slowly reaching out toward his hair.
If I touch him just a little, he probably won’t wake up, right?
I gasped out loud when his closed eyelids suddenly opened at the same time that his hand snaked upward to catch mine. It all happened so fast, and I felt like it was a small miracle that I didn’t let out a shrieking scream. I was too stunned to even cry out and the way that his blue eyes bore into mine made my heart race almost painfully fast in my chest. Suddenly, Bradon was awake even though the tips of my fingers hadn’t even grazed the tip of his hair yet. The way he was staring at me made me regret my impulsive thoughts.
“Umm...how long have you been awake?” I asked softly.
“For a while now...” he replied like it was supposed to be obvious.
“Really? They why did you keep your eyes closed and why didn’t you get up?” I asked while feeling very conscious of the fact that he was still holding my hand.
“I wanted to see what my naughty wife would do to me in my sleep...” he replied teasingly but he wasn’t smiling.
“I didn’t...do anything...” I muttered as I looked away.
I never knew that he was such a light sleeper. He must have sensed that I had been staring at him while I thought he was asleep. That possibility made me feel uncomfortable and I began regretting my decision to remain in bed. I felt Bradon turning my left hand around from side to side with his hand.
“What are you doing?” I asked as I turned back to face him.
Bradon was looking at my left hand. At least, that was what it seemed like at first. He moved my left hand and then I realized that he was watching the large diamond on the ring that I still had on sparkling in the morning light. The large stone reflected light and sparkled attractively. I could imagine the huge stone drawing a lot of attention if I were to wear it outside.
“I don’t know why you bought this but since it must have costed a lot, maybe you should return it?” I suggested.
“It looks good on you,” he said as he brought my hand and the ring closer to his face.
I had no idea why he had to stare at the ring so intensely. Although it was just the ring and my fingers that he was staring at, I started to feel embarrassed and slightly flustered. I had no idea why he really bought this ring for me in the first place. Then again, since he must have bought it just for show, maybe it didn’t really belong to me.
“Oh, I’ll return this to you so you don’t have to worry about it,” I quickly said before he would misunderstand that I was thinking of taking the valuable ring.
“When did I tell you that you need to return it?” he asked coldly.
“Well...” I mumbled.
He was right that he hadn’t told me to return it to him but now that I thought about it, it just felt like the obvious course of action. There was no reason why I should accept such a gift from him anyways. The diamond on the ring was too large for it to be conveniently worn in everyday life and when this charade is over, I would go back to being a single and independent young woman. That meant that I wouldn’t have any need for a ring that looks so much like an engagement ring on my left ring finger.
“You don’t need to return it. Take it as a small gift from me,” he said casually.
“There is nothing small about this gift. It’s expensive and I don’t need it,” I replied stubbornly.
“It’s nothing. I didn’t break my bank buying it and if you don’t like it or if you don’t want it, you can just toss it out later,” he replied without a care.
“I don’t know how wealthy you are, and I’m not exactly interested, but you shouldn’t be wasting money like this...” I complained before rolling my eyes and letting out a sigh.
Spending habits like these reminded me of my mother and how every little thing added up and led to the eventual bankruptcy of my family. Life was much simpler and more enjoyable without the need for extravagant useless spending. That was something that I learnt not so long after moving overseas to start a new life. Just when I started missing my life abroad, Bradon suddenly spoke up.
“I did say that I’m going to buy you a ring like this every month so you can look forward to it,” he said with a firm nod of his head as if he had already made up his mind.
I raised an eyebrow as I stared at him in frank disbelief. Not surprisingly, it felt like were talking about the same topic and yet not quite about the same thing.
