Chapter 742: A Responsibility To Yourself

Jason closed his eyes with a peaceful sigh while enjoying the breeze blowing past him. Hesbeath was right about today. The weather was amazing, and the sun was just right. Not too dim, and not too bright. Jason enjoyed the wind for a few more seconds before he finally spoke to Hesbeath.

"We can talk about your neck fetish later, but right now I’d appreciate it if you got off me."

Jason spoke up nonchalantly, and Hesbeath blushed when Jason said she had a ’neck fetish’. But Hesbeath suddenly smiled, and she leaned forward so that her breasts were pressing against Jason’s chest with her lips just a few centimeters away from Jason’s own! And then Hesbeath spoke in a cute, seductive tone.

"I don’t know about that. You see, I very much like this position, so I think I’ll be staying here for a while longer. Hmm, oh, I see you’ve read through the literature I provided. Were they enlightening?"

Jason nodded calmly, and he turned to look at the books beside him while saying that they were very helpful. Jason knew that Hesbeath had only brought these books with her because she knew that they would be useful to him, so he thanked her for her help, and Hesbeath smiled at Jason’s appreciation before speaking.

"Well, if you really wish to thank me, then I suppose a kiss would be enough to –"

"Not happening."

Hesbeath clicked her tongue in annoyance as Jason turned her down brutally, and Jason couldn’t help but chuckle at the cute reaction. But Hesbeath easily bounced back as she spoke up again.

"I am a generous woman, so I’ll allow you to take advantage of my kindness just this once. Now, it appears that there is something bothering you. I’ve been a queen for a long time, so I’ve developed quite the talent for reading others, and your face tells me that you are worried about something. Come, tell me what is making my beloved frown so deeply."

Jason was a little surprised when he heard what Hesbeath said, and he wondered if he was really that easy to read. But Jason knew he was not the sort of person who wore his emotions on his sleeve, so the more reasonable explanation was that Hesbeath was just that good at reading people! For a moment, Jason wondered if it would be a good idea to confide his worries in Hesbeath. Hesbeath was still a mystery to Jason, and even with all the time they had spent together, Jason still didn’t know enough about her! The only thing Jason knew about Hesbeath was what she had told him, as well as what he had gotten from Gillian’s memories! And even though Jason had a feeling that Hesbeath had never lied to him about anything before, Jason knew that Hesbeath had also not told him the whole truth about herself either.

But the more Jason thought about it, Jason realised that she might be the best person to ask for help in this sort of situation! Hesbeath ruled one of the most prosperous kingdoms in the Primordial Expanse, so Jason knew that she would be able to advise him on how to handle his newfound title as the ruler of Nox. Jason nodded as he decided that this was the right thing to do, and he folded his hands across his chest and looked at Hesbeath before he started to explain. Jason told Hesbeath all about his new responsibilities as well as the fact that he didn’t want to take on the mantle of the leader of Nox. Jason was more than content just being a normal guy on Earth who worked on motorcycles and helped out in his mother’s shop occasionally, but Jason knew that a life like that just wasn’t possible for him anymore after everything he had done, so all he wanted right now was to be able to live on the same world as his family and take care of them. And besides, Jason was going to become a father soon. Jason didn’t want his kid growing up around all this madness.

"I want my kid to have a normal life."

Hesbeath went silent for a few seconds as she considered Jason’s words. Hesbeath wasn’t surprised to hear that Jason was going to become a father since she had already felt the child in Gina’s womb a long time ago, but Hesbeath could tell that Jason’s priorities were being put on the wrong things! Hesbeath answered calmly.

"I remember when Gillian and I became friends a long time ago. She would spend weeks or months in my world without ever going back to Nox, and I began to wonder if she did not have any responsibilities to her people. When I asked her about this, she told me that her responsibility was not her concern. Gillian didn’t care about what others wanted from her, and she only did what she thought was right for herself and those she cared about. Jason, you are the highest authority within the world of Nox. This responsibility was not something you asked for; it was given to you along with your power. The life you choose to live should not be dictated by something that you never asked for. If you wish to take up the mantle of Dead Apostle and lead Nox, then do so with all your heart, but do not assume even for a moment that you owe a responsibility to them, because you do not. And besides, I do not believe it is possible for any child of yours to live a normal life anymore. By the time we get out of here, the Council of Nine and One will come for us both for a trial, and once we are done with that, you will be swarmed with visitors from various worlds who wish to form an alliance with you because of your power. You will occupy positions of authority beyond that of mere mortals, and the peasants around you will treat you like a god. Any child that can grow normally in such an environment is special indeed."

Jason finally let out a calm sigh as he realised that Hesbeath was right. Jason had been worrying for nothing. At the end of the day, Jason would choose to do what he wanted, so he didn’t care what the Vympirs wanted from him. But Jason raised a brow when he heard what Hesbeath said about the council, and he asked.

"What exactly do you think the council is going to do to us? When I think about it, the rampage we went on wasn’t something small. We destroyed more than five worlds in our battle, and I killed millions of Machina with Gillian. I’m sure the punishment won’t be something simple."

Hesbeath shrugged as she put her hands on Jason’s shoulders and shuffled forward so that her breasts were right in Jason’s face. Jason raised a brow at Hesbeath in annoyance, and Hesbeath grinned and wrapped her hands around Jason’s neck to pull his face closer to her breasts before she answered.

"I don’t know what the punishment will be, but you don’t need to worry about them imprisoning us. The council knows better than to get on my nerves, so their punishment will be within reason. And as for your actions on Machina, I think you might get a small pardon since you were under Gillian’s control during that time, but the council will definitely still ask you to pay a significant amount of money as reparations."

Jason scoffed in disbelief at Hesbeath’s words! So, even after running away from paying the fine that the Overlord had put on him, Jason just came back full circle to paying another fine to the council! Honestly, that fucking Overlord was a pain in Jason’s ass even after he was already dead! But Jason’s lips suddenly split into a grin as he realised something interesting, and he released a low chuckle while smiling widely. Hesbeath raised a brow when she saw Jason’s reaction, and she asked him if he had finally gone mad! Hesbeath didn’t know how she felt about falling in love with a madman.
