Chapter 347: Easy Choice

The human mind was really something else. When it came to decisions that were easy, Derek would sometimes find himself agonizing over which choice to make. Things like buying himself a car as a treat.

He would often spend days trying to figure out exactly what colour he wanted, only to give in and buy the car in two different shades. But when it came to what should have been the most difficult decision in the world to make. A split second was all that it had taken for himto pick.

In what had felt like no time at all, Derek had looked at the ways to die placed before him, and he had decided that jumping was their best bet. If he’d stayed on the bridge and had tried to fight, then he’d run the chance of getting shot at close range.

Very few people survived close range shots, and that was not something he was willing to put Emily through. But again, if he’d returned to the car like he had promised his uncle he would do.Then they were definitely going to die in there.

The death slow and painful, with them having a few minutes to panic and be terrified before their end. He had not wanted Emily to go through that. The car had shatterproof glass after all. It would have been impossible to break it and then swim out.

It would literally have become their coffin. So jumping had been all that they had really. The only thing that he’d had left to do after coming to that conclusion was getting Emily on his side. He’d expected some hesitation from her. For her to want to take her chances with something else. But after listening to his hurried whispers. Emily had said yes without hesitation.

For as long as Derek lived, he would never forget that moment. He knew for a fact that Emily loved him because she had told him so. But to see it in the easy way that she trusted him, ready to jump because he said that they had to.

It was a heady feeling.

Emily could not swim and stayed out of the water. But she loved him, trusted him so much that when he’d said jump. She had done it without a second thought, trusting him with her life. ’I love you, I love you, I love you...’ Derek had thought as they had run the short distance to the edge of the bridge.

’...I love you, I love you,’ He’d thought even as he’d heard the sound of a gun and pain had exploded in his leg. ’...I love you, I love you...’ He’d thought as they’d hit the water and gone under.

He had been terrified and in all types of pain. But he had pushed his agony away. Gripping her tighter and pulling her close, even as she’d struggled against him, clearly disoriented, he had not let go. Instead, he had slotted their lips together.

Sharing precious oxygen with her, knowing that as someone who was inexperienced in the water. She was most likely to have breathed out on impact. Losing the air in her lungs as a result, so he gladly shared his own. She had relaxed more after that.

And it had allowed Derek to propel them beneath the waters. They had stayed under for as long as he dared. Knowing that, if they resurfaced too quickly. They ran the chance of coming up to find his uncle waiting for them, with his gun ready.

Derek had held them both under, and had moved them as far away as possible. The waters helping to drag them along as well. By the time that they had resurfaced there had been no sign of his uncle. The waves pulling them away from the land.

"Derek," Emily had gurgled after a few desperate inhales.

"It is all right...it is all right," He’d said back, swallowing his own mouthfuls of water as he had done so. After that, the two of them had stayed silent, not wanting to take in any more water. Derek had managed to shift her onto her back and put an arm around her, and then he had begun to swim.

His left leg aching fiercely with every movement but he had never stopped.

Not really sure if they were going further out or if they were heading towards land. Derek had kept on moving. Swimming even as he felt as though his body were made of lead. Not stopping even with the water in his eyes and the exhaustion deepwithin his bones.

They were alive. That was all that mattered. Emily had trusted him to keep her alive and that was exactly what he was going to do. Even if it came at the cost of his own life. He would keep her in the land of the living for as long as possible.

That was the motivation that kept Derek going, until he caught sight of some rocks. They looked dangerously sharp.

Giant waves exploding against them each time they made contact. The rocks did not look safe at all. But they were still a much better bet than staying out in the waters, without even a tiny bit of hope. With that thought in mind, Derek swum his way to them. Once he was there, he did his best to keep moving as the waves pushed him this way and that, knocking him into more rocks and dragging him along.

No doubt causing both him and Emily further harm. He hung on though, moving forward until he finally found a rock that had a little hollow section in it. Making his way to it, he pushed Emily into the small opening. She let out a pained moan, clearly exhausted as well. And he had to steal himself from reacting to her pain.

It was a necessary thing to do. If he did not wedge her there, then the waves were likely to carry her away. And he could not let that happen.Once she was as secure as Derek could make her. He let go, feeling all of the strength leave him.

She was safe.

He had done it. Emily was safe. Tired brown eyes blinked slowly at him. Derek, still treading water, gave her a weak smile and then all of the strength was suddenly zapped from him. Dredging up one last bit of energy. He stayed afloat for a few seconds longer than he should have been able to. Just to take a look at her one last time.

He had done it. Emily was safe. He could finally let go.

"I love you," He told her. But he was not sure she heard. The waves were too loud, and she was blinking owlishly, like she was confused by everything.

Even so, Derek managed one last smile for her.

"I love you,"He said again. Then his head went under the waters, and he did not have enough strength to come back up.
