Chapter 50: Chapter 50: No One Gets to Have Children

Serena was stunned by Ethan’s words.

She couldn’t believe that he actually suspected the baby was Gabriel’s.

That he suspected she had aborted it herself by taking some kind of pill?

Serena couldn’t accept such a baseless accusation.

Propping herself up with what little strength she had, she sat up and looked at the man standing before her bed. She opened her mouth to explain, "That’s not it, Ethan. You’ve misunderstood. Last night, I was..."

"I misunderstood you?"

Ethan cut her off. "Didn’t I ask you before if you knew Gabriel Galloway? And what was your answer?"

Serena was speechless. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

His face contorted in pain, Ethan gritted his teeth and asked again, "Serena Yardley, I’m asking you one last time. Do you know Gabriel Galloway?"

Faced with Ethan’s interrogation, Serena didn’t dare to lie again.

She opened her mouth, her voice laced with guilt. "I... I do know him, but..."

"Then why did you say you didn’t before?"

Ethan cut her off again, his voice sharp and thunderous.

"Serena Yardley, you didn’t just lie to me and betray me—you crossed a line. This time, I won’t let you off easy."

His fury was palpable. With an intimidating air, he slammed the door and stormed out.

He couldn’t stand the sight of her for another second.

He was afraid that in his rage, he might actually strike her.

The moment he left the hospital room, a pain bloomed in Ethan’s chest, corrosive as poison, making it difficult to breathe.

...

Serena sat frozen on the bed, watching Ethan’s retreating figure. She was completely stunned, her mind a total blank.

’How did things turn out like this?’

’I’m the victim here.’

’Why would he accuse me without even investigating properly?’

Realizing Gabriel was the key—the only one who could clear her name—Serena quickly grabbed her phone to call him.

But after searching through her contacts, she realized she didn’t even have his number.

’We don’t even have each other’s numbers. How could we possibly be having an affair?’

’Ethan can’t just accuse me for no reason.’

Unwilling to endure this injustice, Serena wanted to find evidence to prove her innocence. She started pulling at the IV tape on the back of her hand, trying to get out of bed.

Just then, a nurse walked in, saw her moving, and hurried over to stop her.

"Miss, what are you doing? You’ve just had a miscarriage. You need to rest. Please don’t move."

Serena said weakly, "I want to go home. I don’t want to be here."

"You can’t go anywhere. Mr. Yardley has restricted your freedom."

Serena: "..."

’Ethan... restricted my freedom?’

’Why is he always like this? He never trusts me, never once considers my feelings.’

She knew it was useless to fight back.

Besides, the miscarriage had taken a toll on her body. To recover, get discharged, and prove her innocence, Serena knew she had no choice but to obediently stay in the hospital for the time being.

...

On the drive home, Ethan received a call from Yannick Young.

Over the phone, Yannick reported, "Sir, I’ve got something. Those men in black who tried to stop us when I went to Benton to pick up Miss Serena—they were sent by Gabriel Galloway. And what’s more..."

"Spit it out." Ethan’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel.

The veins on his forehead bulged, and his handsome, chiseled face was as dark as a thundercloud, terrifying to behold.

Yannick continued, "I checked the surveillance footage. Gabriel Galloway traveled to Benton with Miss Serena on the high-speed rail. They stayed at the same hotel that night."

"And this Gabriel is Lady Cecilia’s younger brother. He’s currently a graduate student at Arden University. A lot of people at the school know him, and it seems he and Miss Serena have known each other for about a year."

"Damn it."

With a low growl, Ethan ended the call and slammed his foot on the accelerator, pushing the car to its limit.

The expensive Bugatti shot through the bustling traffic like an arrow loosed from a bow, its speed astonishing.

Perhaps unable to accept this betrayal, the fury on Ethan’s face morphed into an expression of pure agony.

’No one in this world would dare treat me like this.’

’Since Serena Yardley is so determined to test my limits, she can’t blame me for being merciless.’

...

「The Hospital.」

After three full days of bed rest, Serena’s condition had finally improved slightly.

When the nurse came to change her IV drip, she asked, "When can I get out of here?"

The nurse glanced at Serena and replied, "You’ll have to ask Mr. Yardley. You can’t leave until he gives the order."

Serena, "..."

’Ask Ethan?’

But he wasn’t answering her calls or returning her messages. He had come on the first day, but she hadn’t seen him since.

The thought made Serena’s heart ache with misery.

It was his baby. She had a miscarriage and needed him to take care of her. But the one person she needed most had shut her out completely, ignoring her very existence.

Her position in this world was already so lowly, so wretched. Why did fate have to be so cruel to her?

Swallowing the pain in her heart, Serena waited for the nurse to leave before picking up her phone to call Ethan again.

But he still didn’t answer.

She put down her phone, dejected. The more she thought about it, the more wronged she felt.

’I can’t just let myself be wronged like this.’

’If Ethan won’t investigate, can’t I just call the police?’

At this thought, Serena quickly picked up her phone and called the police.

After reporting the incident from that night to the police, she hung up. Serena then got out of bed, wanting to go for a walk.

Suddenly, the door to her room was pushed open.

Serena looked up to see Mrs. Miller walking in. "Miss Serena, are you all right?" she asked, her face full of concern.

Seeing the most familiar face she knew, Serena’s heart clenched with a familiar ache. She threw herself into Mrs. Miller’s arms and began to cry.

"Mrs. Miller, I... I’m okay now, but my baby’s gone. Ethan doesn’t believe me. He says I betrayed him. Mrs. Miller, what am I supposed to do?"

Mrs. Miller didn’t know what had happened to Serena; Mr. Yardley had only told her to come to the hospital and bring her home.

She was shocked to hear Miss Serena say the baby was gone.

"Miss Serena, when were you pregnant?"

Serena pulled away from Mrs. Miller, hastily wiping her tears. "For almost two months."

"Then why didn’t you tell us?"

"I wanted to, but then Ethan brought Sylvia Schuyler home. I was too upset to say anything."

"Then how did you lose the baby?"

With a sob, Serena said, "I want to go home. Can I tell you everything when we get there?"

"Of course, of course. Mr. Yardley sent me to take you home. We can talk all about it when we get there."

Not wanting to press the poor girl, Mrs. Miller quickly helped Serena out.

Just as the two of them were leaving the inpatient building, they ran into Sylvia Schuyler walking toward them.

She was impeccably dressed, her makeup flawless. With her fiery figure in high heels, she exuded an extraordinary air.

Seeing Serena, she deliberately approached her. "Serena, dear, what are you doing at the hospital? Are you feeling unwell?"

Serena’s eyes were red and swollen, her face ashen.

Dressed in simple, casual clothes, she looked frail and weak.

She had no desire to engage with this woman. She motioned to Mrs. Miller. "Let’s go."

She didn’t have the strength to confront her right now; she just wanted to go home and explain everything to Ethan.

Sylvia didn’t press the issue. She watched Serena’s small, frail figure walk away, a sinister glint in her eyes.

’The drug her men gave Serena was only meant to make her barren for life.’

’She never expected it would yield such an unexpected bonus.’

’Well, isn’t this perfect. If I, Sylvia Schuyler, can’t have children, then no one else can either.’
