Chapter 41: Chapter 41: She Left, He Panicked

Serena Yardley had already left the city long ago. How could Yannick Young possibly bring her back within an hour?

Forget an hour—he couldn’t even complete the task overnight.

Ethan Yardley sat on the living room sofa, his hand gripping his phone tightly. His aura was menacing, and veins bulged on his forehead.

His chiseled, resolute face was as grim as an ancient coffin, terrifying to behold.

Mrs. Miller stood nearby with her head lowered, not daring to even breathe too loudly.

A moment later, his phone rang.

Ethan thought it was his assistant and answered instinctively.

But it was Sylvia Schuyler’s voice on the other end. "Ethan, why aren’t you back yet? It’s so late."

Ethan was still fuming, his mind completely consumed with thoughts of Serena Yardley.

An inexplicable tightness constricted his chest. He snapped impatiently into the phone, "I’m busy today. I can’t make it."

Sylvia was about to throw a tantrum. "But—"

"Sylvia."

Ethan cut her off, his voice harsh. "I will repay what I owe you, but if you keep pushing me like this, don’t blame me for turning on you."

He was panicking.

He didn’t know why he felt like he was sitting on pins and needles.

Why he was so afraid that Serena Yardley would leave him.

He didn’t want her to go.

Even if they were to divorce, she could only live somewhere he could still see her.

Besides, he had already explained to her why he was marrying Sylvia. Why couldn’t she understand him?

’Is a marriage certificate really that important to her?’

After hanging up on Sylvia, Ethan glanced at the time. Ten o’clock at night.

It had been three hours, and Yannick still hadn’t brought her back.

’So Serena left a long time ago?’

Ethan couldn’t believe it, nor was he willing to accept the fact that Serena had just vanished from his world.

He wouldn’t let her go.

Even if she ran to the ends of the earth, he would drag her back.

Another hour passed before Yannick finally called.

At eleven o’clock, deep into the night, Ethan was still sitting on the living room sofa, his expression grave.

He answered the moment he heard his phone ring.

On the phone, Yannick reported:

"President, Miss Serena is in Benton now, but we haven’t found her exact location yet. We probably won’t be able to bring her back until tomorrow."

Ethan exploded with rage. "Then find her! If you can’t bring her back by tomorrow, you can forget about your job!"

Not daring to slack off, Yannick hung up and immediately dispatched more men to search the entire city.

But in a city with a population in the millions, finding one person was easier said than done.

「Meanwhile, in Benton.」

Serena Yardley had deliberately chosen a hotel in a remote, hard-to-find location.

Lying on the bed, she turned on her phone, wanting to see if there were any apartments for rent nearby. She planned to stay for the long term.

But as soon as she turned it on, she saw several missed calls from Mrs. Miller.

There were a few from Ethan, too.

She paid them no mind and continued searching for apartments online.

A moment later, there was a knock on the door.

Not knowing who it was, Serena walked to the door and asked warily, "Who is it?"

"It’s me."

It was Gabriel Galloway’s voice.

Serena had no choice but to open the door, and she immediately launched into a tirade. "I told you not to follow me! Why are you still following me?"

Gabriel paid her no heed. Carrying a bag full of food, he smiled and sidestepped her to enter the room.

"You took a taxi and wandered around the city right after getting off the high-speed train, and you only just now found a place to stay. You probably haven’t eaten, have you?"

Serena followed him into the room, fuming. "Gabriel, is there any point to this?"

Gabriel ignored her and started arranging the food. With a smile as warm as a spring breeze, he handed her a pair of chopsticks.

"Come and eat. It won’t taste as good when it’s cold."

Serena didn’t take them, her face flushed with anger.

"You’re making things very difficult for me. Besides, I’m married. I love Ethan Yardley very much. Nothing you do will move me, and I will never be with you."

Gabriel looked completely unfazed. He sat down and started eating himself.

As he ate, he said leisurely, "But aren’t you about to split up with Ethan? That means I still have a chance."

"Who told you I’m splitting up with Ethan?"

"Then why did you run away from home?"

Gabriel looked up at her and asked.

His handsome face, always wearing a smile as bright as a small sun, gave off a strange, comforting warmth.

Serena suddenly felt a little guilty.

She stammered, "I... I’m just traveling for summer break. Who said I ran away from home?"

"Mm, if you didn’t run away, then why were you crying on the train?"

He knew the truth but simply smiled and added, "Hurry up and eat. You’ll have more energy to scold me after you’ve had a full meal."

Serena was at a loss.

She was too angry to speak.

She didn’t understand this man. He knew she was married, knew her heart belonged to someone else, yet not only did he not give up, he pursued her relentlessly.

’Looks like I’ll have to be more careful to avoid him next time I leave.’

"I’ll eat the food you brought, but I’m tired now and need to rest. Please leave."

Serena was kicking him out.

Hearing this, Gabriel didn’t hesitate to stand up. "Alright. I’m staying in the room next door. Just call me if you need anything."

Wanting to get rid of him, Serena responded amicably, "Okay. You get some rest, too."

After seeing Gabriel out, she immediately double-locked the door.

Just then, her phone on the bed rang.

Serena rushed over to pick it up. The name "Uncle" flashed on the screen.

Her heart skipped a beat, but she defiantly refused to answer.

When she didn’t answer, he started sending her messages.

Ethan Yardley: [If you’re not back by tomorrow, you’ll face the consequences.]

Ethan Yardley: [Serena Yardley, when you get back, I’m going to break both your legs.]

Ethan Yardley: [Answer my call.]

Ethan Yardley: [Fine. You think you’ve grown wings, is that it? We’ll see if your short little legs can run faster than my men can chase.]

Serena was speechless.

After reading the messages, she threw her phone in a fit of rage.

’I won’t go back.’

’Isn’t he in a tough spot? Can’t he see I’m making the choice for him?’

’I even signed the Divorce Agreement. We’re not husband and wife anymore, so what right does he have to control me?’

’Just because I owe him a debt of gratitude, that doesn’t give him the right to control my freedom!’

Serena turned off her phone and forced herself to sleep.

’I need to rest up so I can keep running tomorrow.’

’Run somewhere no one can find me.’

But she was being far too naive.

And she had underestimated the capabilities of Ethan’s men.

「The next morning.」

When Serena got up, washed her face, and packed her luggage, ready to check out, she opened the door to find three men standing outside.

One of them was Ethan’s assistant, Yannick Young.

Dressed in a suit, he stood at the door, bowing and smiling at Serena. "Miss Serena, the President has sent us to escort you back."

Serena was speechless.

’How did they find me?’

’It’s over, it’s over. If they drag me back, Uncle is going to break my legs.’

She looked for a chance to slip away, but with a single glance from Yannick, the two bodyguards beside him grabbed Serena and started carrying her off.

Before Serena could even scream, several men in black suddenly appeared at the end of the hotel corridor.

They had come prepared, charging forward to attack Yannick and his men directly.
