Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 66: Divorce Is Not a Small Matter
Adrian Lancaster’s entitled tone stung Wren Sutton.
Seeing his anxious, worried expression, her heart plunged into an icy abyss.
She should have been immune by now, numb to it all. But seeing his tender concern for another woman with her own eyes still sent a dull ache through her.
Wren Sutton had naively thought that putting on a flirtatious display in front of Maya Marshall would unsettle her.
She never imagined she would be the one left miserable. How pathetic. How laughable.
"What are you standing there for? Go get it, and grab some ice while you’re at it," Adrian Lancaster urged impatiently.
The first thing you do for a sprain is apply a cold compress.
"I don’t know where the first-aid kit is."
"You’re always the one who puts that stuff away. How could you possibly not know where it is?"
Wren Sutton looked away, her expression cold. "I used to, yes. But I’ve already quit."
Adrian Lancaster’s face tightened, his expression grim. Unable to deal with her for the moment, he immediately dialed Kevin Dawson’s number.
Soon, Kevin Dawson walked into the office with the first-aid kit and a bag of ice.
He had assumed it was Wren Sutton who was injured, not Maya Marshall.
"President Lancaster, here’s what you asked for."
Maya Marshall’s ankle was already red and swollen; it was a nasty sprain.
As Adrian Lancaster applied the ointment, tears streamed down her face. She sobbed delicately, her voice a breathy affectation. "Adrian, be gentle. It hurts..."
Just from the sound of her voice, it was hard not to get the wrong idea.
Kevin Dawson felt extremely uncomfortable.
Wren Sutton felt just as sick. Her stomach churned violently, and a wave of nausea surged up. She clapped a hand over her mouth and quickly fled the office.
Adrian Lancaster heard the noise and turned, but Wren Sutton was already gone. A flicker of worry crossed his cold, handsome face.
He instructed Kevin Dawson, "Go check on her. Take her home."
When Wren Sutton came out of the restroom, she saw Kevin Dawson waiting for her.
Before she could ask, Kevin Dawson explained, "President Lancaster asked me to take you home."
At the company, he couldn’t address her as Mrs. Lancaster.
Wren Sutton refused flatly. "That’s not necessary. I drove here myself."
"You look pale. President Lancaster is worried."
"Assistant Dawson, there’s no need to make excuses for Adrian Lancaster. You’ve seen how things are between us."
Kevin Dawson started, "President Lancaster is actually..."
Wren Sutton cut him off. "Whatever it is, I don’t want to hear it."
Wren Sutton was insistent, and Kevin Dawson couldn’t force her. Left with no other choice, he settled for the next best option and followed her car from a distance.
Once he confirmed she had arrived home safely, he immediately reported back to Adrian Lancaster.
"President Lancaster, Mrs. Lancaster is home."
Adrian Lancaster stood by the window at the end of the hospital corridor. He lit a cigarette, his expression inscrutable.
"Contact our jeweler. Pick out a ruby jewelry set and have it delivered to my wife."
"Yes, President Lancaster."
...
When Claire Sterling learned that Adrian Lancaster and Wren Sutton hadn’t gone to the courthouse that afternoon to finalize their divorce, she was furious.
She was certain it was Wren Sutton’s doing—that she was refusing the divorce, clinging shamelessly to her son and refusing to let go.
’The nerve of her,’ she fumed. ’As if she’s worthy.’
The words had barely left her lips when Theodore Lancaster pushed the bedroom door open and came in.
"Darling, you’re back." Claire Sterling went to embrace her husband, her eyes brimming with affection as she rose onto her tiptoes to kiss his cheek.
Theodore Lancaster was clearly pleased. His expression softened with tender indulgence, and he couldn’t resist giving his wife’s soft waist a suggestive squeeze.
"I thought I heard you losing your temper when I came in. Who upset you now?"
Claire Sterling leaned into her husband’s embrace, her voice full of grievance. "Wren Sutton."
Theodore Lancaster’s brow furrowed. "How dare she upset you? You’re her mother-in-law."
"I don’t want to be her mother-in-law! What kind of daughter-in-law sends her own mother-in-law to the hospital after making her faint from fury?"
The implication sank in, and Theodore Lancaster grew furious.
"The audacity! Claire, why didn’t you tell me about something so serious? Who took you to the hospital?"
"Adrian and Maya."
Theodore Lancaster was instantly protective. "That Wren Sutton is getting more and more out of line."
Claire Sterling decided to strike while the iron was hot. "Darling, you can’t force love. Adrian was forced to marry a woman he doesn’t love. In these past four years, do you think our son has been happy for even a moment? My heart aches every time I think about it."
Theodore Lancaster fell silent, his expression grave.
As a man himself, how could he not understand his son’s feelings?
Being unable to be with the woman you love is a man’s greatest failure.
Claire Sterling watched her husband’s expression surreptitiously before testing the waters. "They’re only a couple in name. It would be better to divorce quickly. That ill-bred girl from the Sutton family is not worthy of our son."
"A divorce is no small matter. Grandmother would be the first to object. It’s not worth upsetting Mother over this," Theodore Lancaster said, worried about the matriarch’s health.
Claire Sterling changed tack. "But what if Wren Sutton is the one who asks for the divorce...?"
Theodore Lancaster looked thoughtful. "Well, that would be another matter entirely."
Claire Sterling now had a good idea of where he stood. A new path opened up in her mind, a new direction to take.
She looked up, asking Theodore Lancaster in a soft, wheedling tone, "Darling, no matter what I do, you’ll always be on my side, won’t you?"
Theodore Lancaster affectionately stroked his wife’s hair. "Of course. As long as it’s not illegal."
...
「The next day.」
Wren Sutton hadn’t slept well. She’d woken up several times during the night to vomit, her stomach burning with acid. The nausea finally subsided around dawn, and she felt a little less miserable.
After breakfast, she was too tired to go upstairs, so she lay on the sofa to rest her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
Nanny Lawson thoughtfully draped a thin blanket over her, just enough to keep her comfortable.
So as not to disturb Wren Sutton’s rest, Nanny Lawson turned off the television and went about her chores quietly, trying her best not to make a sound.
Not long after, perhaps half an hour later, the sound of a car pulling up was heard outside.
Nanny Lawson, thinking happily that Adrian Lancaster had returned, opened the door, only to find Claire Sterling standing there.
"Madam." Nanny Lawson was quite surprised.
Claire Sterling was equally surprised. "Nanny Lawson, what are you doing here?"
Nanny Lawson briefly explained why she was there.
On the surface, Claire Sterling remained nonchalant, maintaining her dignified arrogance, but inwardly she was a little jealous of Wren Sutton.
’When *she* was sick and feeling unwell, the Old Madam had never thought to send Nanny Lawson to take care of her for a few days.’
’The Old Madam truly treated Wren Sutton like a treasure. The old woman’s gone senile.’
Claire Sterling walked into the living room and immediately spotted Wren Sutton asleep on the sofa. Her anger flared.
"It’s not wrong to say she has no class. Is the living room a place for sleeping? If word of this got out, it would bring shame upon the Lancaster family and Adrian."
Nanny Lawson quickly explained, "Madam, the Young Madam has been ill these past few days and hasn’t been sleeping well at night. That’s why..."
Claire Sterling refused to listen, rolling her eyes in disgust. "Go wake her up. I have something to discuss with her."
Before Nanny Lawson could wake her, Wren Sutton was roused by the noise and groggily opened her eyes.
"Nanny Lawson, who’s here?"
"I am."
Wren Sutton recognized Claire Sterling’s voice, and her heart sank.
’What is she doing here?’
Still, the woman was her elder, and Wren Sutton had basic manners.
She stood, straightened her clothes, and invited Claire Sterling to sit.
Nanny Lawson brought over a pot of freshly brewed tea.
"Nanny Lawson, please leave us."
Nanny Lawson glanced at Wren Sutton, who nodded, signaling that she shouldn’t worry.
Nanny Lawson turned and left, making sure to take her phone with her.
’If Madam gives the Young Madam any trouble, I’ll call the matriarch immediately.’
Now, only Wren Sutton and Claire Sterling were left in the living room.
"What brings you here today, Ms. Sterling?"
Wren Sutton did not call her "Mother." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
Claire Sterling let out a cold snort, her eyes filled with contempt.
"At the main residence, you at least put on an act. Now you can’t even be bothered to pretend."
With that, she slapped a check down on the coffee table. SLAP.
"This is ten million. Take it and leave my son."
Without even glancing at it, Wren Sutton picked up her cup and took a sip of tea.
"Ten million is too little."
