Chapter 31: Chapter 31: It Was All Mr. Lancaster’s Idea

Wren Sutton never, ever expected the person who walked in to be Adrian Lancaster.

’Why is he here?’

’And how did he get here so fast?’

’Could he have already been at the dealership before I got here?’

In contrast to Wren Sutton’s shock, Adrian Lancaster’s expression was cold and unreadable. Only his dark, deep-set eyes were as sharp and intimidating as ever.

Holding a few forms, he walked over, placed them on the table, and stood towering over Wren Sutton.

"You’re pretty quick."

Wren Sutton caught the sarcasm in his tone. She looked away and shot back pointedly, "Not as quick as you."

Adrian Lancaster knew she was being passive-aggressive about the black card incident. He lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.

"Upset already?" he asked, his tone flippant and laced with brazen mockery.

Incensed, Wren Sutton slapped his hand away. "Who said I’m upset?"

Adrian Lancaster’s gaze casually swept over her fair cheeks and dewy pink lips.

She was dressed quite femininely today as well—a striking and pleasant sight.

But in his presence, she showed none of the gentle demeanor expected of a woman.

"Oh, so you’re not upset. On second thought, that makes sense. After all, you still have a bit of money in your account. No need to cry poor."

Her sore spot having been prodded, Wren Sutton shot to her feet, grabbed her handbag, and started to walk out.

Adrian Lancaster didn’t chase after her. Standing his ground, he remarked nonchalantly, "You don’t want the car anymore? It’s a Porsche Taycan in Iceberry Powder."

"If you’re giving it to me in earnest, I’ll take it. If not, then forget it."

Adrian Lancaster scoffed. "I waited for you at the dealership. Isn’t that earnest enough?"

Wren Sutton stopped in her tracks. The image of the Iceberry Powder she’d been dreaming of flashed through her mind.

She absolutely adored that car; it had even appeared in her dreams several times.

If she could just put up with this for a few more minutes, she’d get the keys.

The moment she walked out that door, Adrian Lancaster would surely give the car to someone else.

Wren Sutton hesitated, conflicted. ’For the sake of my dream car, swallowing my pride for a little while isn’t too shameful, right?’

Gritting her teeth, she reined in her emotions, turned back, and returned to her seat.

"Since you’re being so earnest, it would seem petty of me to refuse."

Adrian Lancaster sat beside Wren Sutton. He naturally took her hand, resting it in his palm. He just held it, making no other moves.

Wren Sutton fought the urge to pull away, merely turning her face to the side.

Neither of them spoke. They sat in silence, close enough to hear each other breathe.

A blend of crisp cologne and a soft, elegant perfume lingered faintly in the air.

The atmosphere was delicate.

The seconds ticked by, but no one came in to disturb them.

Wren Sutton glanced at the door, growing impatient.

’Where are the dealership employees? There’s no one in sight.’

’What’s the meaning of this, just sitting here with Adrian Lancaster?’

Wren Sutton didn’t want to wait any longer. She tried to move her hand, but when she tried to pull it away, she found she couldn’t. Adrian Lancaster was holding it tightly.

"Ad—" She turned to get his attention, only to be surprised to see his eyes were closed. He seemed to be asleep.

At that moment, Adrian Lancaster’s features were relaxed, his breathing deep and even. The domineering, high-and-mighty pressure he usually exuded was gone, replaced by an approachability that belied his usual cold arrogance. He looked completely defenseless.

’If someone were to stab him right now, he wouldn’t even know how he died.’

"Hey, Adrian Lancaster, are you asleep?" Wren Sutton whispered, testing the waters.

Adrian Lancaster did not respond.

Wren Sutton was puzzled, lost in thought.

’Did he not sleep last night? He must be exhausted.’

Last night...

A buzz went through Wren Sutton’s head as it all clicked into place.

’He spent the entire night with Maya Marshall. A man and a woman, alone in a locked room... full of passion for each other. It’s no wonder he’s tired.’

The thought of those X-rated scenes made Wren Sutton’s stomach churn. Overcome with nausea, she clapped a hand over her mouth and gagged.

"What’s wrong?"

Adrian Lancaster’s voice suddenly sounded by her ear, a hint of concern detectable in his tone.

Fuming, Wren Sutton yanked her hand free. She pulled a wet wipe from her purse and cleaned her mouth and hands with it.

"I choked on a sip of water."

Adrian Lancaster frowned. "No one’s fighting you for it. Why drink in such a hurry?"

Wren Sutton tossed the wipe into a nearby trash can and pointed to the papers on the table. "Are these the forms I need to fill out?"

Adrian Lancaster grunted in affirmation. "Same as always. It’ll be registered in your name."

Wren Sutton didn’t protest. She picked up a pen and began filling out the forms diligently.

It was mostly just personal information, so she finished quickly. After checking it over for any mistakes, she handed it to Adrian Lancaster.

Adrian Lancaster glanced over it briefly, then stood up. He took Wren Sutton’s hand, lacing their fingers together, and led her out of the VIP lounge.

"I’ll take you to see your new car."

For the sake of the Iceberry Powder, Wren Sutton didn’t resist.

The dealership had prepared a grand delivery ceremony for Wren Sutton. A trail of colorful flowers led from a red carpet at the entrance all the way into the car itself. The floral arrangements were stunningly beautiful.

Besides the flowers, there were balloons, a cake, and champagne—they had gone all out to create a festive atmosphere.

"Ms. Sutton, congratulations on becoming a valued Porsche owner. We wish you a wonderful life, health and happiness, and great success in both your career and your love life."

A staff member presented her with a bouquet and the car keys.

Wren Sutton accepted them with a smile.

"Thank you."

’So that’s why they made me wait in the lounge for so long. They were setting all this up as a surprise.’

"This was all Mr. Lancaster’s idea," the staff member said.

That was something Wren Sutton hadn’t expected. She glanced at Adrian Lancaster in surprise and found him already looking at her, his gaze profound.

"Is this earnest enough?" Adrian Lancaster asked.

In front of so many people, Wren Sutton wasn’t foolish enough to embarrass Adrian Lancaster, especially since he had just given her a car.

She knew better than to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Just as she was about to open her mouth to express her thanks, Adrian Lancaster’s phone rang.

He answered it. Whatever the other person said, his expression changed instantly, his face clouded with worry. Without another word, he abandoned Wren Sutton and turned to leave.

The onlookers were left speechless.

Watching Adrian Lancaster’s receding back, Wren Sutton stood frozen in place, an awkward lump forming in her throat.

The words, "Thank you for the thought, I love it," never left her lips.

"Ms. Sutton, are you all right?" a staff member asked kindly.

Wren Sutton snapped out of her daze. She glanced at the keys in her hand and shook her head with a smile. "I’m fine."

’It’s not the first time I’ve been abandoned like this. I’m not that fragile anymore.’

...

Wren Sutton drove the new car away from the dealership.

On the way home, she stopped by a supermarket and came out with two large bags full of groceries and household items.

When Mrs. Sutton saw her daughter pull up in a new car, Wren didn’t hide the truth, telling her it was a gift from Adrian Lancaster.

Mrs. Sutton was pleased and genuinely happy for her daughter.

"This car is so beautiful."

"The color is called Iceberry Powder."

"It’s lovely," Mrs. Sutton said, nodding. "It suits you perfectly."

"Oh, right. If you were both at the dealership, how come Adrian didn’t come home with you?"

Wren Sutton fabricated a flawless story on the spot. "We were planning to come back together, but he got an urgent call from work. I told him to just head to the office."

Mrs. Sutton was understanding and didn’t blame him in the slightest.

"It can’t be easy for Adrian to manage such a large company all by himself. You should try to be more understanding."

"Mm," Wren Sutton replied distractedly.

’In the past four years, she had done far more than just be ’understanding.’ She had been completely devoted to Adrian Lancaster, catering to his every whim, doing everything for him herself. She had loved him like a husband and doted on him like a son.’

"I have an idea, Nina. When your dad gets home, let’s go out for dinner. Book a nice restaurant and call Adrian to join us. Tell him it’s my treat."
