Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Explain After Getting the Divorce Certificate

For a moment, Wren Sutton’s mind went blank. After confirming the message, she calmly put her phone away.

’It was only a matter of time.’ She wasn’t overly shocked.

Thankfully, she still had money in her own accounts, so there was no need to panic.

And there was certainly no reason to go begging Adrian Lancaster over this.

He had given her that black card in the first place; he had every right to take it back.

Even if he hadn’t taken it back now, she would have returned it to him voluntarily after the divorce.

Wren Sutton took a deep breath, acting as if nothing had happened. She pushed the little episode from her mind and headed to her parents’ house in high spirits.

Seeing the exquisite gift box in her daughter’s hands, Mrs. Sutton feigned a scolding. "Why are you always buying things? We’re running out of space at home."

"I didn’t buy it. It’s from Adrian Lancaster’s grandmother. It was a kind gesture from her, I couldn’t very well refuse."

Mrs. Sutton took the gift box. "His grandmother is too kind. Does this mean you just came from the Lancaster family’s estate?"

"Mhm." Wren Sutton nodded. "I went over and stayed the night yesterday."

She glanced around the room.

"Where’s Dad?"

"He went fishing with Uncle Wallace and Uncle Morgan. He won’t be back until this evening."

"Oh."

Wren Sutton went to watch TV in the living room. The coffee table was laden with all her favorite snacks and treats.

Mrs. Sutton went into the kitchen to start on lunch.

"Nina, how about braised pork ribs with rice, lettuce with oyster sauce, and blanched shrimp for lunch? Just the two of us."

"Sounds good."

After lunch, Wren Sutton started on the dishes while Mrs. Sutton helped her clean up.

"Since your father isn’t here, and it’s just the two of us, let me ask you something."

Wren Sutton smiled. "What is it? You’re being so secretive."

Mrs. Sutton leaned in and asked in a low voice, "Are you and Adrian still not planning on having a baby?"

Wren’s hands froze, and a headache instantly bloomed.

’This again. The baby issue.’

’First his family, now mine. There’s no escaping it.’

When Wren Sutton fell silent, Mrs. Sutton assumed her daughter was just being shy.

"Nina, there’s nothing you can’t tell your mother. You’re at the perfect age to have children, you should start thinking about it. While I’m still healthy, I can even help look after the baby."

Mrs. Sutton’s words came from the heart, and Wren Sutton knew her mother meant well.

"Mom, actually, I..." She pressed her lips together, hesitating. Her mind was in turmoil as she wrestled with what to say.

’The baby issue could wait. What she was really agonizing over was whether to tell her mother about the divorce now.’

"You’re at home, you can say whatever is on your mind. You don’t have to be a stranger with your own mother, do you?" Mrs. Sutton coaxed gently.

"Mom, that’s not what I meant."

"Then what are you really thinking? Talk to me. I want to hear what’s truly on your mind."

After a fierce internal debate, Wren Sutton decided to keep the divorce a secret for now.

’Same as before. I’ll explain everything once the divorce papers are finalized.’

"I had a minor surgery a while ago. I’m still recovering, so I’m not thinking about having a baby right now."

Mrs. Sutton’s expression changed instantly, her face filled with concern.

She turned off the faucet, took the bowl from Wren Sutton’s hands, and led her to the sofa in the living room.

"What surgery? Why didn’t you tell me sooner? You’re not feeling well, yet you’re standing there washing dishes. Are you trying to worry me to death?"

A pang of guilt hit Wren Sutton. "Mom, I’m fine, really. It was just a small gynecological procedure. I’m almost fully recovered, and I have a check-up in a few days."

Her heart aching, Mrs. Sutton hugged her daughter tightly, on the verge of tears.

"You silly girl, you should have told me. We don’t live that far from each other. I would’ve been there in a heartbeat if you’d just called. Why didn’t you say anything? When’s your check-up? I’ll go with you."

Wren Sutton leaned on her mother’s shoulder, a whirlwind of emotions—both happy and sad—swirling inside her.

Mrs. Sutton patted her daughter’s hand. "In that case, let’s not think about having a baby for now. Focus on getting better first. Your health is more important than anything else."

"You should stay here until your check-up. Let me take care of you, otherwise I’ll feel awful."

Wren Sutton nodded. "Okay, I’ll stay here. Thank you, Mom. I’ll be troubling you."

Mrs. Sutton’s heart felt like it was shattering. "You’re my own flesh and blood. Who else would I care for if not you?"

Wren Sutton’s eyes grew red. "Please don’t tell Dad about this. I don’t want him to worry."

Mrs. Sutton sighed and reluctantly agreed.

...

During her afternoon rest, Wren Sutton went back to her room.

She tallied up the balances of all her bank accounts to get a clear picture of her finances.

Adding in her mahjong winnings from yesterday and the two recent "apology payments" from Adrian Lancaster, the total was quite substantial.

’As long as she didn’t suffer a major illness or disaster, or get into gambling or reckless investing, she was set for life in terms of living expenses and retirement.’

Wren Sutton lay on her bed, thinking hard.

Adrian Lancaster had cancelled the black card today, which meant he likely wouldn’t be transferring her any more money. Her main source of income was gone.

She had money in her accounts, but a one-way flow of expenses wasn’t a long-term solution. She needed to find a job to ensure a steady, sustainable income.

Just as Wren Sutton was wondering what kind of job she should look for, her phone rang. It was an unfamiliar number.

She didn’t want to answer, but the person kept calling. Finally, with a sigh, she picked up.

"Hello, am I speaking with Ms. Wren Sutton?" 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Hearing the caller’s crisp, professional tone, Wren Sutton was momentarily taken aback. "This is she."

"Hello, Ms. Sutton. This is the Porsche dealership. Mr. Lancaster has ordered the newest, fully-loaded Taycan in Iceberry Powder for you. You may come to pick it up at your convenience."

"..."

Wren Sutton was astonished by how fast Adrian Lancaster had acted.

’They had just talked about getting a new car yesterday, and today he was already telling her to come pick it up.’

"Ms. Sutton, I will text you the dealership’s detailed address shortly. Have a wonderful day, and we look forward to seeing you."

"Thank you."

Wren Sutton hung up, lost in thought.

’How did Adrian Lancaster know she wanted the Iceberry Powder one specifically? She was certain she hadn’t told him yesterday.’

’How strange.’

’Could he read minds or something?’

A DING from her phone announced that the dealership employee had sent the address.

Her train of thought was broken. Wren Sutton glanced down at the message, committed the address to memory, and got up to change her clothes without a second thought.

’Better go pick up the car before Adrian Lancaster changes his mind.’

Wren Sutton left the house, hailed a cab, and headed straight for the dealership.

Upon entering and giving her name, a staff member enthusiastically led her to the VIP lounge.

"Ms. Sutton, please have some tea and make yourself comfortable. I’ll be right back with the paperwork for the car."

"Alright, thank you."

Wren Sutton sat quietly on the sofa and waited patiently.

A few minutes later, the sound of footsteps approached the door.

Thinking it was probably the employee returning with the paperwork, Wren Sutton set down her teacup and turned her head to look.

The moment their eyes met, her scalp tingled and she froze completely.
