Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 23: Young Madam, the Old Madam Wants to See You
Adrian Lancaster was silent, making Sean Sterling think something was wrong.
"Why aren’t you saying anything?"
"It’s me," Adrian said in a deep voice, pulling his gaze back.
Sean raised a surprised eyebrow.
"Why are you calling me from your wife’s phone?"
Adrian was in no mood to chat. He was desperate to understand the whole story.
He got straight to the point. "Why did you book a room at The Zenith Hotel? Room 9999."
"Wren didn’t tell you?"
"No."
Sean was quiet for a few seconds. "Isla Griffith got drunk at the banquet. I happened to be there, so I took her to the hotel and then told Wren Sutton about it. What’s wrong? Why are you suddenly asking about this?"
A whirlwind of emotions washed over Adrian as he listened, and he regretted the hurtful things he’d just said to Wren.
’So she didn’t betray me. She came to The Zenith Hotel to take care of Isla.’
"It’s nothing. I’m hanging up."
As long as nothing was going on between Wren and Sean, Adrian was relieved. As for whether anything was happening between Isla and Sean, he couldn’t be bothered to care.
Adrian put his phone away, walked to the bedroom door, and knocked lightly twice.
Wren stopped crying, but she didn’t open the door for him.
Adrian understood how she felt. She probably didn’t want to see him right now, so he didn’t push it.
"I’ve cleared things up. Here’s your phone back."
There was no sound from inside. Wren still didn’t open the door.
Adrian knew he was in the wrong. He had falsely accused an innocent person. His mind was filled with the image of Wren’s tear-streaked, aggrieved face, and a bitter taste filled his heart.
’Wren loves me so much. She said she couldn’t live without me. How could she possibly fall for someone else and betray me?’
’I was careless and impulsive.’
"I’m sorry. I misunderstood you."
"Open the door, and I’ll give you your phone."
Wren cried silently, choosing to go without her phone rather than open the door.
Separated by just a door, it felt as if they were a thousand miles apart, with an uncrossable chasm between them.
The atmosphere grew heavy, the silence suffocating.
After what felt like an eternity, Adrian received a text from Maya Marshall.
[I keep seeing a shadow lingering outside my hospital room door. I’m so scared I can’t sleep. Can you come stay with me?]
Adrian hesitated for a moment, but he was ultimately too worried about Maya. He spoke to Wren through the door. "I’m leaving the phone by the bedroom door. Remember to get it."
Wren heard the front door close. She waited a few minutes, then cracked her door open. After confirming Adrian was gone, she slowly came out and picked up the phone from the floor.
The screen lit up, and the top notification popped into view. It was a transfer record.
Adrian had transferred a full one million to her account.
"..." Wren felt neither sadness nor joy. She numbly closed her eyes and wiped away her last tear.
...
「The next day, late in the morning.」
Isla Griffith groggily opened her eyes. Her whole body felt uncomfortable, and her head was pounding.
She sat up, looked around, and realized she was in a hotel. Her mind went blank, and a bad feeling washed over her.
The problem was, she had no memory of what happened last night.
"AHH!!! Which bastard brought me here? I’m gonna kill him!"
Isla’s scream woke Wren up.
Wren got out of bed and walked to the adjacent bedroom in her pajamas.
"I figured you’d wake up freaking out. It’s so you."
Isla stared, dumbfounded. "Why are you at the hotel too?"
"It’s a long story."
"Then make it short."
Wren said, "You got drunk last night. Sean Sterling brought you to the hotel, and I was worried about you being here alone, so I came too."
Isla’s eyes lit up. "Who did you just say brought me here...?"
"Sean Sterling."
"President Sterling!" Isla was both flattered and surprised. "Was it really him?"
Wren nodded. "Mhm."
Isla’s face flushed red, but then another thought occurred to her. "Wait, how did you know it was President Sterling who brought me to the hotel? Did he tell you? But you two don’t know each other."
Wren explained, "Sean Sterling is Adrian Lancaster’s cousin."
"What!" Isla’s composure shattered.
"Adrian Lancaster’s mother is Sean Sterling’s paternal aunt."
Isla was on the verge of tears, her hatred for Adrian deepening.
"He could be anyone’s cousin, but he has to be that scumbag’s? Adrian doesn’t deserve him!"
Wren didn’t defend Adrian. He really didn’t deserve it.
"Now it’s my turn to ask you. Where was your manager last night? How could she just leave you in someone else’s hands? You’re lucky it was Sean. If it had been anyone else, you’d be the one crying this morning."
Isla looked thoughtful, rubbing her nose with a troubled expression.
"I don’t remember anything about last night, not even what happened at the banquet."
Since she’d said that, Wren sighed and didn’t press the matter. She decided to let it go.
The two of them got ready and left the hotel to get something to eat.
Suddenly, Isla remembered something. She opened her bag and her face fell.
"Fuck, the diamond necklace is gone."
She looked at Wren guiltily, on the verge of frantic tears.
"I remember putting it in my bag. How could it be gone? AHHH, if it’s really lost, just kill me."
Wren remained calm and didn’t blame Isla in the slightest.
"Are you sure you put it in your bag?"
"Positive. I’m calling the police right now. Even if I have to turn Aston upside down, I will find that necklace."
Just as Isla finished speaking, her phone rang. It was an unknown number.
She hung up immediately.
The number called again.
Isla muttered a curse and hung up again.
"What a psycho."
Just then, Wren’s phone rang. It was Sean Sterling. She answered at once.
"Sean."
Sean was concise. "Do me a favor and tell Isla Griffith her blue diamond necklace is with me. I just found it. Tell her not to worry. She can come by my office to get it anytime."
Wren smiled. "Okay, I’ll tell her."
Isla heard everything, her emotions riding a roller coaster.
"Thank God. As long as it’s not lost. I’ll go get it right now."
Wren had originally planned to go with Isla, but on the way, she received a call from the Lancaster family’s old residence.
"Young Madam, the Old Madam would like to see you. She wants you to come back and have lunch with her," the servant said respectfully.
It was only then that Wren suddenly remembered—the Old Madam wasn’t feeling well. She had a cold.
Normally, she should have gone to see her yesterday, but she’d been held up by other things.
Wren felt a pang of guilt. "Okay, I understand. I’ll head back now."
She hung up the phone.
"What’s wrong?" Isla asked.
"The Old Madam has a cold. I have to make a trip to the old residence."
No matter what a scumbag Adrian was, it didn’t affect Wren’s feelings for the Old Madam.
In the entire Lancaster family, only the Old Madam genuinely doted on her and loved her. Both emotionally and logically, she couldn’t refuse the request.
Isla understood. The two said their goodbyes and drove off in different directions.
...
「The Lancaster Family Residence.」
It was an elegant, traditional, six-story Chinese-style villa, steeped in history and character.
Wren drove her car straight through the main gate.
Several luxury cars were parked in the courtyard, among them a white Bentley belonging to Adrian’s mother, Ms. Sterling.
Wren paused after getting out of the car. Thinking of Ms. Sterling’s attitude toward her over the past four years, an indescribable bitterness and sorrow welled up inside her.
No matter what she did, or how well she did it, she could never win the other woman’s approval, let alone praise or compliments.
In Ms. Sterling’s heart, Maya Marshall was the perfect choice for a daughter-in-law. Just like Adrian, mother and son were both unconditionally biased in Maya’s favor.
"Young Madam, you’re back."
The servant’s voice broke Wren from her thoughts. She quickly composed herself and, steeling her nerves, walked into the villa.
