Chapter 65: Chapter 64: A Sacrifice

They were already on the second floor and were nearing the staircase to the first, where the grand duke’s study is.

When they were already in the entrance hall, out of nowhere in the darkness, someone attacked from the shadows.

Victor sensed and blocked the attack then sent the man flying, far away from them. His free hand grabbed Eleanore’s wrist.

"Stay here, do not move, there could be more hidden." He cautioned them.

Eleanore nodded and tightened her grip on Stella. The same man came back and Victor fought him just fine. Not as good as Caelestis, who could have their heads and limbs flying in one slash.

The assassin was focusing more on defence. It was too suspicious, when Victor had to let go of Eleanore’s hand, as the attacker kept pushing him away from the two women.

Just what is his motive?

Immediately as Victor ward off somewhere in the shadows and only the clashing sounds of their swords were audible. Another emerged in front of the two women. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Stella yelled on seeing his bloodied sword. Eleanore tried to sprint away but he grabbed her by her flowy, open hair and threw her to the ground.

Eleanore’s hand slipped out of Stella, who had spirited away thinking Eleanore was following closely behind her.

Lying on the cold marble floor, Eleanore groaned in pain from being thrown on the floor like she was some useless luggage. Slowly she turned her gaze to the assassin. He glared at her, his eyes beaming from the light of his clean sword.

Eleanore knew she had to run, but like last time in the closet. She froze.

He raised the Sword high in the air.

"Mommy! Open the door. Mommy!" She could hear some painful cries of a little child.

Eleanore covered her ears with her palms, shifting away her gaze back to the ground. The dizziness striking back in, making her feel immense pain in her head.

For days, since she got no flash back, she had forgotten this pain. The last few times were not this painful, though. This memory is probably so scary and sacred, that every word said in that memory was piercing her ears.

Before the assassin’s sword could land on her, Victor shoved his sword in the attacker’s abdomen. "Elle! Wake up! What’s wrong with you?’ He yelled.

Caelestis had dealt with most of the assassins upstairs. He was near the staircase when the horrifying scene of Victor dealing with two enemies popped in front of his eyes. Eleanore was on the ground, covering her ears, for who knows what reason and Stella was nowhere to be found.

He rushed down and took another one of the assassins from Victor, dealing with him in seconds and then three more appearing from shadows. They were two low on power. Victor is not very skilled in swordsmanship and Caelestis could not deal with them all, while trying to save two women stuck in the battlefield.

Stella quickly noticed that Eleanore was not with her, thus she traced her way back. How could she leave someone, who while facing the enemy, rushed to rescue her, instead of just saving herself.

One of the assassins was able to escape from the clutches of the two men. His mission was in front of him, weak and scared. This mission had taken away many of his brothers and he knew that he might not be able to escape as well. Instead of dying in vain, he wanted to make his boss proud.

He sprinted ahead; his sword raised high in the air. Eleanore noticed him. Her mind was a mess, her commands were ignored. She couldn’t move no matter how hard she tried.

"Eleanore!" The woman’s calm voice turned into a strong, harsh one. "Keep quiet. Cover your mouth. You must listen to your mommy." She ordered.

She could feel her ears ringing and the sword ready to slice her apart. That’s when the stupid system window appeared in front of her.

|| Danger ||

The warning was not helping. The droplets of blood, that belonged to one of the two men fighting him, dripped down his sword, which was ready to slice her.

She closed her eyes, but the cold metal of the sword never touched her. She felt no pain. Her eyelids opened and it was Stella kneeling in front of her. How? She didn’t look good, did she—

"Stel!" Eleanore whispered, completely flabbergasted.

Her eyes slowly fell shut and she lost her balance, falling in Eleanore’s arms. Eleanore enveloped her arms around. Her palms touched something wet on her back. Confused, she raised it in the light to find her palm covered in red blood.

A painful screech escaped her mouth. "Stella!" She screamed, grabbing Victor’s and Caelestis’ attention quickly.

The attacker however couldn’t care less. He was determined to complete his mission, This time instead of slicing Eleanore, he decided to stab the sword through Stella and Eleanore, killing both in one go. But before he could do anything, Victor already had his sword stabbed past his chest. He spit out a little blood before falling to his dead.

Victor rushed to Eleanore, who was hugging Stella in despair. Scared and crying in fear of losing her. "Stella!" She called her. "What have you done?" She asked.

Why would this woman sacrifice herself for someone who was once her enemy? Why would she do this? Why? Eleanore couldn’t stop blaming herself for everything.

"Victor! We must save her." She said hissing.

Caelestis came to where the loud screech had come from, after dealing with every enemy that had infiltrated his mansion. He couldn’t believe his eyes, when he saw the woman he loves, fallen on the ground over Eleanore. Blood oozed out of a huge cut in her back and she was not responding.

He rushed to her, his eyes glaring at Eleanore with anger. He didn’t have to say anything, for Eleanore heard his words screaming out of his rageful eyes.

Caelestis pushed Eleanore away from Stella, throwing her on the cold floor again. He picked Stella in his arms and started upstairs passing an order to his secretary. "Find me a good doctor." He said before disappearing in darkness.

Victor started to the exit, to obey his master’s order, but was stopped when Eleanore pinched on his bloody green coat. "Will she be fine?" She asked. Tears still streaming down her eyes.

"Yes." He answered, before freeing himself from her and rushing out of the mansion.
