Chapter 400: A Lottery for Baby Products?

"Don’t be angry," Qin Kaize said, gently patting Su Yijia’s shoulder from behind. Once they settled back into the lower bunk, the onlookers couldn’t see them anymore. Qin Kaize then held Su Yijia’s hand under the table, soothingly rubbing it.

Su Yijia’s rosy lips were tightly pressed together, clearly still upset about the earlier family.

"Don’t worry, after such a scene, that woman definitely can’t escape her responsibilities," Qin Kaize said in a softer tone, trying to comfort her.

Su Yijia took a deep breath and exhaled heavily. "I’m just a bit angry at her audacity. People like her are better off disappearing completely from their children’s lives. Otherwise, who knows how she’ll torment her kids in the future?"

Such things aren’t just found in novels; even TV shows portray them frequently. There was even a song back then that was particularly well-known, evoking sorrow in listeners. The stories in it made one realize that it’s impossible to truly understand how evil people can be. When fate is unjust, the misery can seem so extreme that it feels like a tall tale.

"Just observe these things; they’ll never have anything to do with us," Qin Kaize said, tightening his grip slightly on her hand, pulling her closer to lean against his arm. If they weren’t in public, he would have wrapped her in his embrace and comforted her thoroughly.

"Of course, this has nothing to do with us," Su Yijia replied firmly.

Hearing her response, a pleased smile appeared on Qin Kaize’s lips. Under the table, their fingers intertwined, suppressing their excitement. However, this train ride didn’t offer them much peace.

Less than half a day into the journey, the sleeper car was already packed to capacity. Everyone was returning home from various parts of the country for the New Year. So even though sleeper tickets were expensive, many people still bought them. However, with tickets priced at ten or twenty bucks, families often couldn’t afford to buy a sleeper for everyone. So three or four people would share one sleeper, while the others would sit in regular seats, taking turns to sleep while keeping an eye on each other’s belongings.

In those days, there were plenty of pickpockets on trains. If luck was bad, one might even encounter human traffickers. But mostly, families squeezed into the sleeper car, chatting excitedly. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

Su Yijia was nearly driven mad by the noise, but that was just how things were in that era. If she were to jump out and tell them to keep it down, that would be truly absurd. Unable to stand it, she resorted to playing the lottery twice, but the results yielded nothing she wanted. Instead, all she got were snacks and kids’ toys.

The funniest part was that she ended up winning several baby products. While these items were undoubtedly useful, given that she was currently using condoms, she had no idea when she’d be able to utilize them.

Su Yijia suspected that her recent obsession with wanting a baby might have influenced the system to give her all these related products. God knows the system even supplied her with a whole box of folic acid. Looking at the quantity, she thought that even if she had a child every year, she’d have enough supplies for at least ten years.

With that thought, Su Yijia glanced at Qin Kaize, who was in front of her, carrying their luggage while squeezing through the crowd to exit the train station. The man’s posture was upright, his long legs radiating strong masculinity with each step, especially his well-defined waist, which, although not particularly wide, exuded power.

They really should have two children: one boy and one girl. Otherwise, they would be wasting such good genes. But if they were to have two, they’d have to hurry. Now, if they had one child, they could plan to have another during their junior or senior year. Though family planning was technically enforced, it was merely a suggestion. However, by 1982, it would become a strict rule that couldn’t be violated, especially given Qin Kaize’s job.

Upon exiting the train station, they spotted two small jeeps parked outside. A man leaning against one of them smoking perked up upon seeing Qin Kaize emerging from the crowd.

"Boss!" They waved excitedly at Qin Kaize, running over before Su Yijia could reach them, and took the bags from Qin Kaize and Grandpa and Grandma Lin.

"Hello, sister-in-law!" They all greeted Su Yijia in unison, their eyes fixed on her.

"Hello!" Su Yijia smiled back at them, their astonishment growing even more intense.

They had heard that their boss had married a particularly beautiful wife and thought it normal. After all, a man as exceptional as their boss wouldn’t marry someone unattractive. But who could have imagined that she would be this stunning? Only their boss could secure a wife like this; otherwise, if it were them, they’d be worried someone might take advantage of her in their absence.

"What are you staring at? Let’s go," Qin Kaize urged, his face darkening. Although he knew his friends wouldn’t have any improper thoughts about Su Yijia, it still annoyed him to see them looking.

"Right! Let’s go! After we drop off our things, we’ll head to the State-Owned Restaurant for a meal. The dishes were pre-ordered with the chef; they’re local specialties and quite tasty," Zhu Yanghong said eagerly.

They were assigned to a small courtyard house on the outskirts of the city. Though it was remote, it was convenient for traveling to the farm. Every now and then, the two big teams from the nearby farms would pass by with ox carts to go to the city for supplies. Plus, there weren’t many houses around, avoiding unnecessary socializing.

This last point was something Qin Kaize specifically requested. He understood that his wife came from a different world and might feel out of place among the people of this era. He didn’t see this as an issue, nor did he think his wife needed to change.

After all, what mattered most in friendships was comfort, not conformity. So, he simply eliminated any people or situations that might make Su Yijia uncomfortable.

The group ate a local specialty at the State-Owned Restaurant, but the food was quite average. After returning to the small courtyard, Qin Kaize spent the entire afternoon discussing matters with them. Su Yijia, naturally, couldn’t listen in on the team discussions, so she helped her grandparents tidy up items they needed to take to the farm the next day.

Having arrived early, it was clear they weren’t there just for a quick visit, so they needed to transport supplies in batches. Carrying large bags would attract attention, and it wouldn’t be good if it sparked jealousy among others.
