Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 354: They Insisted on Visiting Uncle Xia’s House
Not only was Fang Xuewei nervous, but even Mi Hongwei felt his heart in his throat.
Seeing them like this, Old Mrs Niu huffed, "What can I do? I just want to make amends after offending Qin and the others. If it weren’t for my son, would I really lower myself to apologize to those two young ones?"
Mi Hongwei didn’t really believe that his mother had such high awareness. Refusing directly would only lead to more trouble.
"Mom, there’s no need to go through all this trouble. The past is past; you shouldn’t feel like you need to apologize to two kids at your age. We just need to avoid them in the future," Mi Hongwei patiently coaxed.
Old Mrs Niu was pleased by his words, feeling grateful that her son was always on her side. Unlike her daughter-in-law and those two granddaughters who jumped at the chance to say she was making a fuss.
But Old Mrs Niu had thought about this for so long; now that she finally had a proper reason to act, even if it meant losing some face, she was determined to go through with it.
"No way! A mistake is a mistake! Your thinking is flawed; you can’t hold me back from making progress!" Old Mrs Niu said solemnly.
Fang Xuewei felt her scalp tingle at those words. After twenty years of being mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, she had never heard such a statement. Now she could come up with such grand justifications; it was clear she was up to no good.
She secretly signaled Mi Hongwei to find a way to deflect this, but Old Mrs Niu caught her in the act.
"What are you doing? I wondered why Hongwei has been listening to me less; turns out it’s because of you! What kind of sin did I commit to have you as my son’s cold-hearted wife?"
"Mom! Stop it! Xuewei didn’t mean it that way," Mi Hongwei quickly intervened, fearing his mother might hurt his wife.
When Old Mrs Niu realized she couldn’t reach Fang Xuewei, she started hitting Mi Hongwei instead.
"Look at you, forgetting your mother now that you have a wife!"
Mi Hongwei felt overwhelmed by her antics. In the end, he had no choice but to agree.
"Alright, Mom! Stop making a fuss. We’ll do as you say."
"Humph! You two treat me like an outsider! Everything I say is wrong! I raised you kids with so much effort, and now I’m treated with disdain!" Old Mrs Niu grumbled while clutching her bamboo basket, still not satisfied.
Fang Xuewei and Mi Hongwei didn’t know how to respond. She turned to them and glared, "Why are you just standing there? Go get an umbrella and change into clean clothes. And bring Baoqian and Baoxin out."
"Why call them? They’ve never met Commander Qin and his wife," Fang Xuewei thought it was odd.
Old Mrs Niu rolled her eyes at her. "Are you thick-headed? Qin’s wife is only twenty; the other aunties in the team can’t get along with her because they’re much older. If you let them get along, it’ll be easier to put the past behind us."
Fang Xuewei thought about it and found her reasoning somewhat valid. She called her two daughters out from their room.
Mi Baoqian and Mi Baoxin grew nervous when they heard their grandmother wanted to take them to Uncle Xia’s house. But since their parents agreed, they couldn’t say much and had to put on their raincoats.
Meanwhile, the group excited about the restoration of the National College Entrance Examination paused when they heard a knock on the door.
"Who is it?" Qin Kaize called out.
"Kaize, it’s me, Mi Hongwei."
Hearing the name, Qin Kaize instinctively glanced at Xia Weiguo, who looked just as puzzled. There hadn’t been much going on in the team lately, and if there was something, Mi Hongwei wouldn’t be the one to come.
"I’ll go see who it is." Xia Weiguo stood up and opened the door.
The strong wind and heavy rain hit him right in the face. September had entered autumn, and the typhoon brought a chill.
Xia Weiguo turned his head to wipe the rain from his face, but Old Mrs Niu rushed in, holding the bamboo basket.
Seeing Qin Kaize and Su Yijia in the living room, her smile faltered for a moment before becoming even brighter.
"Qin, it’s terrible weather, and we have nothing else to do. Your Uncle Mi has a friend from Su City who brought a basket of hairy crabs. We can’t finish them all, so we came to invite you to join us."
"Old Mrs Niu, you’re too polite. But since it’s Commissar Mi’s friend who brought them, we can’t accept it," Qin Kaize said, forcing a smile.
But Old Mrs Niu seemed oblivious to his rejection and directly set the basket on the dining table.
"Why be polite? Your Uncle Xia has been neighbors and colleagues with your Uncle Mi for over ten years. They say a distant relative is not as good as a close neighbor. We can’t just eat your food without you tasting ours, right?"
Seeing her say this, Qin Kaize couldn’t push her out and could only nod at Grandpa Lin and Grandma Lin.
They got up and started helping Old Mrs Niu with the crabs.
Mi Hongwei peeked in, and when he confirmed his mom was really washing crabs, he smiled apologetically at Xia Weiguo and the others.
"I’m sorry, my mom has a habit of doing things on a whim. If she says anything inappropriate later, feel free to respond however you want; I’ll make sure to pull her away."
He wasn’t naive enough to think his mother would be the type to apologize genuinely. But with her high-handedness, he had to go along with it.
It was better to use this opportunity to nip her intentions in the bud.
Fang Xuewei walked over to Su Yijia, taking her hand. "I’m sorry, Miss Su, we should have stopped her."
"Fine, since you both know she means trouble, if she causes a scene later, I won’t hold back," Su Yijia replied, her smile a bit cold.
