Chapter 408: Chapter 408. Bank Heist

The other reason Amon insisted on making a move the day after the jailbreak was that it was the first day of the week. During that day, the Prime Minister held a weekly meeting with the royal family and important kingdom officials to discuss kingdom matters. The mayor was among the officials who joined the meeting, and it usually lasted a whole day. In addition to the issue of the recently occurred jailbreak, the meeting would be even longer. They would probably leave the palace way past midnight.

In the mayor’s absence, the person with the highest cultivation inside the city hall was absent. That person was the mayor’s bodyguard. He had the cultivation of the Intermediate Spirit Stage. The mayor himself was a Peak Mystic Stage cultivator.

As for the vice mayor, he was at the Beginning Mystic Stage. The vice mayor didn’t enjoy the benefit of a personal bodyguard like the mayor. He had an escort group of six Transformation Stage cultivators. However, this escort group didn’t follow him all the time. They waited outside the mansion during the party when he was kidnapped.

Under normal circumstances, it would be difficult for San Guo and Xin Wuming to kidnap a Beginning Mystic Stage cultivator. Thankfully, the vice mayor was a well-known party animal who enjoyed going out with different women.

San Guo came to the party with a Demon Gang female member who possessed a beautiful face and sensual body. He then struck up a conversation with the mayor. The mayor had no interest in speaking with a nobody like San Guo. He, however, was attracted to the woman San Guo was with. The woman’s revealing dress filled the vice mayor’s thoughts with all kinds of lewd things.

San Guo signaled the vice mayor that the woman he brought was a gift. The vice mayor interpreted the offer as San Guo trying to get on his good side. He gladly accepted the woman’s company, and the two walked away.

Without much effort, the woman convinced the vice mayor to go to a secluded room in the mansion. Inside, she served him wine and asked for a toast before they got in on the action. After drinking the wine, he fell asleep.

Xin Wuming and San Guo had been waiting outside. They went in after the vice mayor was drugged. They undressed him, and San Guo dressed up as him. Xin Wuming stuffed the vice mayor into a large bag and carried him away.

San Guo, who wore the vice mayor’s clothes, went with the woman out the back door. Some guests witnessed them leaving. These guests later reported this sighting to the vice mayor’s guards when they came to look for him. Considering the vice mayor’s reputation, they believed he ditched his guards to have alone time with the woman.

Xin Wuming brought the vice mayor to a secret hideout where Diao Xin was waiting. They tied the vice mayor using engraved rope to ensure he couldn’t do anything despite his high cultivation. San Guo regrouped with them there. They then woke the vice mayor using an antidote Amon provided before feeding him the Eternal Anguish Poison. After experiencing the poison’s torture, the vice mayor willingly cooperated with anything they asked.

With the absence of the mayor, the vice mayor, and a large part of the city guards usually stationed there, the city hall was at its most undefended state. Even so, based on the intelligence the vice mayor provided, there should still be at least one Beginning Spirit Stage cultivator, two Mystic Stage cultivators, and a dozen Transformation Stage cultivators inside the city hall. These were the personnel tasked to remain inside the city hall no matter what.

Among the Transformation Stage cultivators were guards tasked to stand watch at the vaults’ entrances. There were two vaults inside the city hall. One housed the city’s myriad treasures. The other housed its aer stone reserve. The one they targeted was the aer stone vault.

Thanks to the vice mayor’s info, they knew exactly who the guards tasked to guard the vaults that day. They kidnapped the two guards scheduled to guard the aer stone vault. With Amon’s prosthetic expertise, he disguised himself and Diao Xin as the two.

The two they disguised as had their guarding shift at night, so they went to the city hall after sunset. Under the cover of night, the two sneaked into the city hall through the back door. They didn’t need to go through checkpoints if entering from there. They could use that entrance because they had the vice mayor’s golden key, which opened all the doors in the city hall.

They then took over the guard duty. Since the two wore familiar faces and where they were supposed to be, no one suspected anything was wrong.

The two stood like statues when people walked past. When the hallway was clear, Diao Xin turned to the entrance and worked on the words of power on the door. Unfortunately, she only had one day to study the seal formation of this door, and it was also based on the vice mayor’s memory. Hence, she still needed a lot of work to deactivate the seal.

Only after deactivating the seal could they open the door using the vice mayor’s key. If they inserted the key before doing so, the seal would read their identities. If they were not the mayor or the vice mayor, an alarm would sound, and the vault would go under lockdown.

Amon used his Mystic Stage’s sense and superb hearing to detect if someone was approaching. Diao Xin stopped her work and returned to pretend to be a guard whenever he received Amon’s warning. With this method, they stealthily whittled the words of power on the door little by little. freewebnoveℓ.com

The progress was slow, and it took hours. Thanks to the situation created by the jailbreak, few people were in the building. Thus, few people walked past the hallway where they stood guard. This gave them more time to work.

Near midnight, Diao Xin had almost unraveled most of the seal formation. She probably needed only half an hour more to complete her task.

Amon coughed, which was the signal that someone was approaching. Diao Xin stopped her work and got back to position. The two stayed like that as two men came near. The two were chatting. They looked like common workers, not guards.

When they almost walked past the vault’s door, one stopped. He stared at the door with a frowning forehead.

His partner realized he had stopped and asked, "What’s wrong?"

"These words of power... They seemed off," he said.

His partner chuckled. "You must have something wrong with your eyes. Can’t you see the two guards standing here? No way someone toy with the words of power without their knowledge."

The partner turned to Amon and Diao Xin and asked, "Did you let anyone touch the door?"

Imitating the voice of the guard he was impersonating, Amon answered, "No. We didn’t let anyone approach this door."

"See?" The partner told his friend.

"Are you underestimating my status as an expert engraver?" His friend replied.

The partner lifted his hands as a sign of surrender. "Knock yourself out with the door. I will be waiting at the canteen."

The partner resumed walking while the expert engraver studied the door.

"Hm... These words of power have clearly been meddled with. Are you two sure no one has touched this door?" The engraver asked.

"As I mentioned, since we took over our shift, no one has touched this door," Amon answered.

"Hm, what about you?" The engraver asked Diao Xin. "Do you see anything suspicious?"

Diao Xin shook her head.

"We came together, so we saw the same thing," Amon answered for her.

"I’m not asking you," The engraver told Amon. He turned to Diao Xin again and said, "Answer me! Do you see anything suspicious?"

Diao Xin couldn’t answer because she would be found out. She was disguised as a male. Unlike Amon, she could not imitate her voice to resemble the person she was disguised as. The instant she spoke, her cover would be blown.

"Hey! Did you hear me? Why won’t you answer? Did you see any..."

The engraver’s voice trailed off as he suddenly became very drowsy. He dropped to the ground and started snoring. A small needle was in the back of his neck.

"We can’t drag this any longer. Quickly unravel that seal!" Amon instructed.

Diao Xin nodded. She returned to working on the door.

Amon picked the engraver up and brought him to a nearby room, which was a storeroom. He put the sleeping engraver inside. Afterward, he took several talismans and started sticking them on the ceiling alongside the hallway.

With what was happening, he knew they would be discovered soon. The engraver’s partner would suspect something was wrong when the engraver didn’t arrive in the canteen. He might bring other people here, most probably guards. By then, Diao Xin had better already unraveled the seal.
