Chapter 42: Chapter 42: A Stupid Woman Who Thinks She’s Clever

"Get the head of the Hebei District on the phone for me, now!"

As soon as she finished speaking, an assistant beside her quickly picked up the phone on the conference table and called the head of the Hebei District.

The call had barely connected when, before the person on the other end could even speak, Selena, seated at the head of the table, erupted. She immediately let loose a torrent of abuse:

"Hu Hanshan! What the hell is going on over there?! I’m giving you five minutes. I want to know the whole story from beginning to end! If you can’t get this sorted out in five minutes, you can pack your bags and be gone by tomorrow!"

After tearing into him, she didn’t care whether he understood or not. With a sharp CLICK, she slammed the phone down.

Listening to the BEEP BEEP BEEP of the disconnected line, the head of the Hebei District sat in his office, completely baffled.

’The boss just chewed me out for ages, but I have no idea what it was all about.’

’Why did the boss suddenly call just to yell at me? Did I do something wrong?’

’I can’t think of anything. I’ve been so diligent and hardworking lately.’

"Seriously, what the hell is going on? I haven’t done anything to piss off that foreign ice queen!"

He didn’t know the specifics, but he knew one thing for sure: something had gone wrong on his turf. And it had to be big.

He just didn’t get it. How did the higher-ups already know when he hadn’t heard a single thing? What on earth happened? He was completely in the dark.

’But whatever it is, my direct boss only gave me five minutes. I’d better figure out what’s going on, and fast.’

At this thought, the director quickly grabbed his phone and opened WeChat. Instead of contacting his own staff, he went straight to a good friend he had at headquarters.

Since they were close, he didn’t beat around the bush and just asked his question, hoping his friend could tell him what had happened and why the boss had suddenly blown her top.

As luck would have it, his friend was in that very same headquarters conference room.

After receiving the message, the friend glanced up. Selena, still stone-faced at the head of the table, wasn’t looking his way. He quickly and discreetly typed out a reply.

The message was simple, but it clearly explained everything about the new chairman:

"New chairman went to the Qinhuang Island branch. Couldn’t even get in the door. Furious. But he specifically praised an intern named Li Qian."

Upon reading the message, Hu Hanshan, the head of Louis Vuitton’s Hebei District, slapped his forehead. ’No wonder!’ he thought. At the same time, he silently cursed the Qinhuang Island store manager and all her ancestors for the next eight generations.

’The new chairman visits one of my stores and can’t even get in the damn door? What the hell is with that store manager in Qinhuang Island, Xiao Taohong? Does she think she’s immortal or something?!’

He grabbed his phone and immediately found the number for the Qinhuang Island store manager.

"Who the hell do you think you are?! Huh? Tell me, who the hell do you think you are!"

The moment the call connected, Hu Hanshan started screaming into the phone.

Xiao Taohong, who was still fuming over the fifty or sixty thousand in commission she’d just missed out on, froze when she heard him. Then her expression turned sour.

"Uh... honey, what’s wrong? Why are you so angry all of a sudden? Did you miss little ol’ me? How about I catch a flight and come see you tonight, hmm?"

Hearing Xiao Taohong’s coquettish voice, Hu Hanshan felt a headache coming on. He cursed himself for not being able to keep it in his pants back then.

But when he remembered the WeChat message from his friend at headquarters, his expression, which had softened slightly, immediately turned grim again.

"Cut that crap out! I put you in that store to run it, not to cause trouble for me! Look at the mess you’ve made! You didn’t even let the new chairman in the door? You really do think you’re untouchable, don’t you?! Now, you’re going to tell me exactly what happened, right now!"

Xiao Taohong froze. ’I stopped the new chairman? No way. How could I have even met the new chairman?’

"Uh... wait. It was that broke loser from before! You’re saying... you’re saying those two losers I just stopped... that was our new chairman? No, no, not a loser, a rich guy. But how is that possible? I just saw him go into the Armani across the street and buy a whole outfit with my own two eyes! Why would our chairman buy clothes from the competition?"

Hearing this, Hu Hanshan finally understood the gist of it. ’The chairman must have been making a secret visit, and this idiot Xiao Taohong treated him like some poor slob.’

’What a classic case of big boobs, no brain! How did I ever get involved with such a stupid woman!’

"You stupid woman, you don’t know a damn thing! Do you think you can possibly comprehend the chairman’s methods? He was scouting out the competition! It’s called ’know thy enemy and know thyself, and you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles’!"

Xiao Taohong blinked, and his words hit her like a bolt from the blue. ’So, the new chairman wasn’t pretending to be some loser... he was scouting the enemy!’

"S-so what do we do now? I actually stopped our new chairman... what are we going to do? Oh, wait, no! It wasn’t me! It wasn’t me who stopped him! It was one of our interns, a girl named Li Qian! And, uh, I already fired her. Right, it was all her fault! She’s the one who didn’t let the new chairman in."

Erm...

If he hadn’t heard that, it might have been better. But as soon as the words left her mouth, Hu Hanshan felt his blood run cold. ’This stupid woman is still trying to lie to me, even now? And she’s trying to pin the blame on the intern?’

Most importantly, if his friend hadn’t just told him that the *only* person the new chairman was happy with was that very same intern, Li Qian, this self-righteous, idiotic woman would have been the death of him!

"You *fired* Li Qian?!"

"Yes, I did! Hehe, Brother Shan, wasn’t that brilliant of me?"

To be honest, Xiao Taohong never would have guessed that firing the little intern in a fit of pique would now turn out to be the very thing that could save her skin.

She was especially thrilled at the thought that her "foresight" might earn her points with the new chairman. ’If I play my cards right and... sacrifice a little,’ she thought, ’I might even get a taste of the handsome new chairman myself.’

At this thought, an image of the ridiculously handsome man from the photo she’d saved on her phone flashed through her mind.

But just as her mind was filled with fantasies of the powerful new chairman, a single sentence from Hu Hanshan over the phone stunned her into silence, freezing her on the spot.
