Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 389: The Genesis of the Testing Center
There was a long silence as if the Autonomous Administrator as the handsome figure called itself was debating on whether to tell them the truth or not.
"Tje program began thirty-two years ago, but was done in top secrecy. This testing center was built to make things more convenient." The AA explained as if it had made a significant decision.
"Convenient for what?" Leng Pan asked.
"Of course to get specimens and experimental subjects." It said as if it was an obvious thing.
"What does that mean exactly?" Leng Pan wanted to make sure that she wasn’t imagining horrific scenes in her head.
"People coming to the testing center provide their genetic material which is essential in our experiments of making humans better and more adaptable.
However, getting quality samples is challenging considering how mediocre many humans were before the meteorites.
With the testing center and many types of people coming everyday for various reasons, we had a platform to harvest human tissue and DNA for experiments.
If the quality of the sample passed our standards, we might invite the owner to participate in the experiment." AA explained in detail.
"What normal human being would willingly participate in such a sick procedure?" Juan Ke couldn’t hold it anymore.
The AA turned to him and replied, "Humans are greedy creatures. With a promise of immortality and improved quality of life, more people than you can imagine volunteered for the experiments with much coercion from us."
"But immortality is just a fallacy. It doesn’t exist." Lu Tao complained somewhat timidly then hid behind his brother.
"The greed in human nature would not allow them to think that much. Even if they do, once chosen, they could not escape."
"So, to speak, you forced those who didn’t agree with your experiments or those who changed their mind?" Leng Pan asked angrily.
"Humans need to change and adapt to the evolving environment, otherwise, they would be weeded out by natural disasters like the apocalypse.
The experiments and this whole program was necessary." That was the most absurd excuse anyone had ever heard an AI give for trying to machinize humans.
Humans are humans because of their humanity, their greed, their fears, their joys, their vulnerability.
If that was taken away just to make them adapt better, are they still considered humans?
As if to answer that question, several sounds of footsteps came from outside the lounge.
The door was pushed open and what could be considered three people walked in.
They were different from zombies. They walked upright, their eyes were clear, and movement precise.
They resembled normal humans in every way, except that their movement to the slightest detail seemed too streamlined. Like they were machines instead of humans with independent thinking and decision-making ability.
They also radiated pressure that was similar to high-level awakened humans.
But there were no spiritual energy fluctuations around them. It was as if the power they had wasn’t the normal kind.
Leng Pan couldn’t put her finger on what the difference was.
"Modified humans!" A gasp of shock escaped her mouth when it finally registered what those human figures were.
"Yes, these are some of the successful candidates who participated in the experiment after the apocalypse began." The AA explained with something that Leng Pan thought might be pride.
How could something that didn’t have emotions like an AI have pride?
She thought she must have imagined it.
"How many of these?" Lu Zhen asked.
"Twenty-eight. Those are the ones in the testing center created after the meteorite event.
The others who had participated before the apocalypse were always released after completing the procedures." The AA continued to explain.
"So, you mean that even before the apocalypse, there were already these unfeeling robots you call improved humans among the humans in society?" Leng Pan couldn’t fathom the horror of those living with such people.
"Yes."
"To think that something so abominable has been ongoing for thirty-two years is unthinkable." Lu Tao muttered under his breath, but it seemed the AA still heard him.
"Human potential and civilization has reached a bottleneck. Genetic degradation, emotional instability that you people like to call mental health, excessive resource consumption, and poor governance has turned earth into something less livable.
Humans must change to ensure future survival." The AA sounded so convincing, giving examples that truly exist that anyone without prejudice would be convinced.
Now Leng Pan understood how those who volunteered for the experiments were convinced.
But as she kept listening, something didn’t sound right. What does earth being livable or not have anything to do with anyone?
Was the owner of this testing center in the same team as the aliens that invaded earth?
As if the AA could hear Leng Pan’s thoughts, it explained. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
"Predictive models indicated an extinction-level event within half a century, regardless of external threats."
This explained a lot. So, the apocalypse was predicted, leading to the experiments. But who did it?
"So, you decided to play God?" Leng Pan asked.
"No." The AA replied. "Humans did."
As everyone was wondering what the AA meant, the wall behind them lit up. It turned out that the wall was an illusion, it was merely a large screen.
Then old footage started running on the screen.
Conference rooms, men and women in formal suits, high-level military insignias, and envelopes placed on the table with a stamp stating TOP CLEARANCE.
Some of the people on the screen were well-known figures across the globe. People they could only even see on television.
"They called it ’project continuity’." AA continued to explain.
"A joint initiative between select global powers and non-human consultants."
Non-human consultants. What were those? Was it figures like AA?
"The goal was not to save everyone, because they understood that it was impossible. But they could preserve humanity by refining it and making humans stronger and more adaptable." The AA continued.
This alone left Leng Pan’s team in a dilemma.
It was true that what they did was unacceptable. Experimenting on humans was a clear disregard for the sanctity of human life. But their driving force could be said to be almost noble.
