Chapter 388: Chapter 388: Psychological Games

She didn’t know the strength of the people in that facility. They were also unaware of how many people or robots there were who could fight.

So, before taking any rush action that might result in casualties or injuries.

The team set up camp there with standing fans, ice blocks, and such to reduce the heat.

There was actually air conditioning in the room, but it wasn’t enough with the kind of heat going on.

"What do you think about this place?" Lu Zhen asked Leng Pan when they finally sat down together.

To avoid any possibility of eavesdropping and trouble from the AA or whatever team he had there, Leng Pan made an independent space with spiritual mist.

Within the space, they could talk without worrying about anyone outside of the circle hearing what they were saying.

"I don’t think this place is as simple as it looks.

Why is a testing center suddenly doing human experiments?

Also, they were obviously operational even before the apocalypse. How did that happen?" Leng Pan asked a few questions that truly got one thinking.

"It seems that this testing center wasn’t just set up for research purposes.

But one thing still doesn’t make sense.

Why did they document people for no reason?" Lu Zhen also wondered what the owner behind the testing center planned to do.

This wasn’t something done by someone without future plans.

Also, did he know about the apocalypse? Otherwise, why the experiments? The government would never have allowed such an experiment during normal times and Lu Zhen refused to believe that no one in leadership knew anything.

"We’ll know soon enough. I don’t think with the strict standards they have set for this floor, they would allow us to stay here long-term." Leng Pan said thoughtfully.

"Then let’s wait and see. For now, it’s better to recover our strength, in CA we have to fight our way out of here." Lu Zhen comforted his wife before Leng Pan withdrew the mist.

The mist barrier dispersed silently, blending back into the surroundings like it never existed.

Leng Pan realized that if she wanted to find out what was happening, she couldn’t rely solely on Lu Tao’s ability. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Even though he see through walls and listen to conversations kilometers away, the testing center was obviously different.

They seemed to have some kind of ’signal blocker’ for his kind of abilities.

So, she still had to do the investigation herself.

Leng Pan pretended to be tired and resting. She leaned back on the sofa and closed her eyes as if resting.

Then, very quietly, Leng Pan extended her water ability in small, thin threads that were invisible to the naked eye and undetectable.

The water threads slipped through vents, crawled on walls, and seeped into cracks throughout the entire building.

This time, she didn’t just focus on the third floor but also other floors.

She wasn’t aggressive with her probing, but moved very gently. Making sure that even the most advanced technology wouldn’t detect the change in humidity in the air.

She concentrated and listened quietly and attentively.

At first there was nothing making her think that she had made a mistake.

Then, she realized that there was a very low humming sound coming from beneath the floor.

It was almost undetectable. If her water ability wasn’t so advanced, she would never have discovered it.

She listened more keenly and realized that there were patterns to the humming.

It felt like the humming of frequency magnetic waves, overlapping and repeating at specific intervals.

Leng Pan attached her consciousness to the water threads, which allowed her to see what was happening by following those magnetic waves.

She found herself staring at machines that looked like they belonged to the future.

There were humans attached to the machines and some of their shapes had changed.

Some had weird features such as sharp-pointed ears like the proverbial elves.

Some were taller than any normal human, and others simply had arms that seemed to stretch at will.

Just as she wanted to examine them more closely, the humming frequency changed and the temperature in the room went up by about five degrees.

It wasn’t that much considering that they were already used to the high temperatures due to the extreme heat, but it was also enough to make those in the room notice.

Leng Pan’s eyes snapped open.

".... commander." Someone within the team whispered.

Leng Pan raised her hand to silence them.

Now wasn’t the time to show fear, otherwise the people watching them would take advantage of that.

They were in enemy territory and couldn’t afford to show weakness.

"You can stop hiding. Why not just watch openly?" Her voice echoed through the room.

Silence followed for a few seconds as if she had just imagined that presence. Then the lights inside the room dimmed slightly.

A voice that sounded almost mechanical sounded within the room.

"You are exceptionally perceptive." Even though the voice sounded different, Leng Pan could still tell that it was AA.

"This level of environmental awareness is far beyond any data we have on humans." The voice sounded again.

That wasn’t comforting at all. It dawned on Leng Pan that while they acted composed and non-threatening to learn more about the testing center and those within its ranks, the testing center was doing the same.

Them leaving the team alone to rest in the lounge was nothing more than placing them in a watch room.

They could see and record everything the team members were doing as part of their experimental data.

This time Lu Zhen didn’t beat around the bush because he realized that both sides were playing a game of cat and mouse. It was just that no one could determine immediately which side was the cat and which was the mouse.

"Since you’ve stopped hiding, can you answer some of our questions?" Lu Zhen asked directly.

"Which ones?" AA asked tentatively.

"Why does this testing center exist and who gave you the right to decide on the future of humanity?" Lu Zhen asked coldly as he stood up next to Leng Pan who had stood up when the lights dimmed earlier.
