Chapter 390: Chapter 390: Losing Humanity

The images moved from the conference rooms to cold laboratories.

Children playing in sterilized rooms, adults undergoing tests or strapped to beds while machines were attached to their bodies, others having blood extracted.

It was a chaotic mess that seemed so organized.

"High-value individuals were monitored from birth or after their identification." AA kept explaining.

Leng Pan suddenly understood.

"That archive data you mentioned..." her voice trailed off.

"You were candidates. You all have high intelligence, high emotional thresholds, mental resilience, and are genetically compatible with what is needed." The AA explained further.

This made Leng Pan’s stomach turn. To think that someone somewhere had evaluated them like a piece of merchandise just because of their natural endowment of talent and genetics was sickening.

"But why us?" Leng Pan still wanted to know which part of those things he mentioned made them quality as subjects, seeing that many people fit the same criteria.

"Lu Zhen’s fast rise in the business world indicated his high intelligence and mental capacity.

His ruthlessness in making decisions made him adaptable without external influence.

As for you, your quick adaptation of a new life after your parents passed away indicated your high mental resilience and emotional control.

Also, your early graduation indicated your high intelligence making you a suitable candidate as well."

Leng Pan couldn’t believe that the things that she considered made her a unique human being were actually used to evaluate her as a candidate for some human experiment.

It was unsettling to say the least.

"Also, data collected a few days after the meteorite event showed rapid adaptation to the new environment as awakened individuals.

Your ability to adapt and evolve is fast and unpredictable. Making you perfect for a new world order."

Leng Pan didn’t feel like listening anymore. She thought she was going to be sick.

The screen moved on from the images of experimental subjects to graphs and charts.

"This is data of how fast some individuals adapted after the apocalypse began. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Your ability to destabilize a controlled environment makes you either an asset or a threat." AA continued.

"...you mean the apocalypse...?" Juan Ke’s voice then trailed off in disbelief.

"The apocalypse was accelerated, yes. For unavoidable reasons, of course." The AA finished Juan Ke’s sentence.

"You caused it?" Lu Zhen was shocked by this information.

"No, the meteorites were inevitable as earlier predicted. But they were...guided.

Some people decided where they would fall densely or sparsely."

Leng Pan laughed without humor.

"You massacred billions of humans for some experiment?" She asked bitterly.

"It was for survival. This testing center and many others around the world were built to create post-apocalyptic humans capable of rebuilding civilization with too much emotional interference." The AA corrected.

Suddenly, more of those modified humans walked into the room.

There were men, women, children, both young and old. Their eyes were clear with calm expressions and perfect postures.

"These are some of the successful subjects. They feel no fear, anxiety, or despair. They will not hesitate when taking action." AA said as if showcasing a successful piece of artwork.

One of the middle-aged women took a step forward.

"We chose to do this. Although my decision was driven by emotions, but I don’t regret it." She said with a serene face.

You couldn’t even determine what emotions lead her to make that decision.

"The old world was doomed anyway with global warming and toxins filling the air and water bodies.

We chose evolution." She continued.

"Emotions make humans weak." Another man said.

Leng Pan could see that these people were completely brainwashed.

"What emotions drove you to make this decision?" Leng Pan still wanted to know why the middle-aged woman who seemed to have had a family made that decision.

"My son. I loved my son too much and when I heard about how the world would end if nothing was done, I chose to do something so that I could protect my son." The woman replied.

"Even though now I feel nothing, but my son awakened an ability and is safe as I had hoped." She continued.

One could tell that she was really convinced she had done the right thing.

This level of brainwashing was astonishing. Someone was even grateful they felt nothing for the child they gave birth to. Wasn’t the reason parents were driven to work harder to protect their children’s future the emotions they have? The love they feel for them? The adoration they feel?

"Don’t look at me like that. For the world to live, sacrifice must be made. I chose to be a part of that sacrifice. So, I don’t regret it." The woman said when she noticed the way Leng Pan was looking at her like a lunatic.

Leng Pan stepped forward and looked at the woman who seemed to be at peace with the fact that she felt nothing.

"You are wrong." She said as she looked at all the people who had just walked into the room. "All of you." She continued.

"Why?" The woman asked with her head tilted as if she didn’t understand.

"You didn’t transcend emotions. You stopped existing as humans." Leng Pan said softly without any aggression.

"But we are still humans?" Another man said.

"No, you are not. You are basically machines." Lu Zhen said coldly.

"Emotions like fear, joy, grief, love. These aren’t bugs in the human body that need to be cleaned up." Leng Pan explained.

"These are what make us human. They are our survival mechanisms. They are the reason humans fight so hard to stop extinction.

Because the thought of dying, the thought of their loved ones getting hurt, the thought of being alone terrifies them.

It makes them want to work harder. It makes them want to put in more effort in eliminating anything that might make their fears come true.

So, you see, emotions don’t make humans weak. They make them strong. So strong that they would face any danger to survive."
