Chapter 383: Chapter 383: Overwhelming Gratitude

That evening, three members of the team left to go back to their base to bring out their families.

Lu Zhen left with them to ensure their safety since they were few and in case of an ambush like earlier or if they met a slightly larger zombie horde, then they would all be toast.

The journey to the base was uneventful because all they met were mindless zombies, which they took care of quickly.

By 11:00 pm they had arrived near the base and Lu Zhen, who had dragged the arrogant girl along, found a spot to hide and wait for the others to come out.

He was far enough not to be discovered, but close enough to intervene if something went wrong.

Luckily, the leaders in the base were as greedy as mentioned. Once they heard that the team had found a lot of supplies in a town two hours away, they didn’t question many details.

They just provided the large truck the leader asked for and even kindly offered to give them a bigger cut once they brought the supplies back.

Apocalypse has seasoned everyone into qualified actors when it comes to serving their own interests.

So, the leader and the others showed an appropriate amount of gratitude and said they would hurry to collect the supplies and load them in the truck before someone else found the town then they would come back the following night.

The leaders of the base tried to convince them to come back the same night, but the team leader insisted that by the time they went back and loaded the truck, it would be morning already.

They couldn’t travel during the day, so they could only come back the following night.

With this excuse, the leaders were convinced.

Hence, when the three people who went back to the base visited the families of their team members and urged them to pack quickly and board the truck, no one noticed.

Even when they drove out of the gate, the guards had already been warned by the higher-ups not to give them a hard time so that they do not delay them collecting supplies.

This worked in their favor, even Lu Zhen never needed to appear.

When the truck drove to the place Lu Zhen was hiding, he warned the girl to stay hidden, otherwise she would be discovered by zombies and torn to pieces.

Someone would discover her later anyway.

He left her with a packet of biscuits and one of those carbonated drinks the team had salvaged from the shops earlier.

Due to the shock she had suffered, the girl was no longer as arrogant as before and didn’t dare to argue with Lu Zhen.

Thus, she was left behind as she watched the truck drive off into the darkness.

Just as they promised, once Lu Zhen brought everyone back and settled the family members in the building they had made camp in, they drove the large truck around the town and collected most of the supplies.

Those that couldn’t be put in the truck, Leng Pan made use of the darkness as a cover to stuff them into her space bangle.

By the time dawn was breaking, only a small amount of the supplies were left for those who might pass by someday.

Just like the day before, during the day, the team intermingled and got to know each other.

This time, there were even family members, so the scene was lively, reminding Leng Pan of the base they had gradually built.

"It’s good seeing people this lively, even if their future is uncertain." She commented with a smile as she watched Lu Tao wrestle with another teenager who came back with the family members from their base.

"Things will eventually get better. We have to believe that." Lu Zhen comforted her with an arm wrapped around her shoulders.

"Mmm... it will get better. This apocalypse has to be better than the last one." Leng Pan added.

The people who came from that base had one thing in common, whether young or old. They were all thin to the point of being scary.

This was astonishing, considering how healthy the arrogant girl who was reportedly a leader’s daughter looked.

She had rosy cheeks and a healthy parlor. So, it was surprising to see the others who came from the same base looking like they could be swept away by the wind.

Without a word, Leng Pan took out vacuum-packed rice mixed with beef and some dried vegetables and offered them to everyone there.

This is the kind of a meal that would only need water added and it would cook itself.

This was also the first decent meal the families that came out of the base had seen in weeks. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Thank you so much Commander." One older woman stood up and got on her knees before anyone could stop her.

She was bowing and thanking Leng Pan like she had saved her entire ancestry.

While Leng Pan was shocked by this display of gratitude, more people followed and kneeled to the ground bowing and kowtowing to thank her.

"Thank you so much. You are our benefactor.

If you tell us to go west from now on, we would never dare to go east.

If you tell us to chop heads, we would never dare to strangle them..." The gratitude got weirder and weirder forcing Leng Pan to snap out of her shock.

She helped the older woman up first.

"Granny, there is no need to kneel. You are now part of our team and it’s only natural that I help you.

I am not helping for free. You guys will have to contribute once you get back to the base.

There are chores to be done, crops to be planted, houses to be repaired, and even zombies to hunt.

So, I am not giving you anything for free. You have to work for it." Leng Pan gave a speech to reduce the awkward situation.
