Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 362: Learning to Protect Herself First
He was just informing Leng Pan.
Leng Pan knew that there was no use arguing with him at that moment, so she just nodded her head and agreed.
They could discuss that later.
"Okay."
Now, they had other things to take care of.
"Let’s take care of those things first." Lu Zhen said as he began to unleash fire from his outstretched hands.
"How about we try a duo attack? Your fire is too strong and burning those things underground might also compromise the foundation of the surrounding buildings.
We plan to use the underground for retreat in case of an emergency.
Even though it seems that someone has already beat us to digging the tunnels, we can take them over and customize them for our use.
Let’s not ruin them." Leng Pan suggested.
"Okay then, let’s try a less destructive but effective attack method." Lu Zhen agreed with mostly everything his wife said, except when it concerned her safety.
Since they had agreed, there was no time to waste.
Lu Zhen produced several large balls of fire and Leng Pan covered them with water. Instantly, hot mist was created that could burn flesh off bones.
The two worked together in sync to launch those misty balls into the opening that Lu Zhen had just created.
They were ability users, so they had spiritual energy and even without Lu Tao’s superpower, they could sense where those creatures were.
So, they used their minds to control the misty balls and propelled them in the direction the creatures were.
The balls moved at such a high speed that they were unstoppable.
Within seconds, ear-splitting roars came from the tunnels under the ground.
They were roars of pain and anguish and movement could be heard following the screams.
By the magnitude of the movement, it was obvious that the creatures were thrashing around trying to find relief from the burning sensation.
Unfortunately, nothing worked and soon, only thin bones remained where more than ten large centipedes had been.
After Leng Pan exited the tunnel, four more centipedes arrived and they were all burned to the bone by the steam.
Even though it wasn’t a long battle, it still gave Leng Pan and Lu Zhen some insight on how to fight the creatures that were evolving and adapting to the changes and disasters faster than any human could ever do.
Seeing that their mission had been accomplished, Leng Pan used the water that was surrounding them and still evaporating at a fast speed to create an ice staircase leading back to the twentieth floor.
Their earlier commotion had attracted a lot of attention. People were standing near windows watching them like a spectacle.
While this wasn’t something to bother them, it was not a very good thing.
With what had happened that morning, some people became resentful seeing how powerful they were yet they had not made a move to save their loved ones that morning when they were drowning.
But these people still didn’t understand the apocalypse.
Leng Pan had gone through the apocalypse before and had a lot more compassion than now. However, her compassion had landed in hot soup more than once before she learned to mind her business.
Even though watching that scene of children and even adults drowning was heartbreaking, she knew that she had to protect herself and those around her first.
Leng Pan took the lead to step on the ice staircase and Lu Zhen followed behind her.
As they climbed higher, the staircase became shorter. With every step they climbed, Lu Zhen would melt the step he had just left behind. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Just like that, when they reached the twentieth floor and climbed into the apartment through the window, the last stair also vanished.
"Are you guys okay?" Li Yunjia couldn’t wait to ask the couple as she offered each of them a glass of cold juice.
Even though there was still water outside, the sun was so hot it could already cook an egg.
The temperature had already risen so much that it was almost hitting 50°.
"We are fine, mom. Don’t worry." Leng Pan replied, taking the glass of juice and drinking in large gulps.
She was indeed thirsty after that short battle.
"That’s good. What were those things?" Li Yunjia breathed a sigh of relief only after making sure her children were safe.
"They are mutated centipedes. They are so large and weird." Leng Pan explained.
"By the way, Lu Tao, you said a lot of those things were moving in this direction. How is it now?" Lu Zhen remembered what his younger brother had said before he went down.
"Oh, for some reason, they retreated. Moreover, some of those tunnels dug underground seem to be collapsing behind them as if to create a barrier." Lu Tao said, surprise in his voice.
"Someone is definitely commanding those things and this was probably a test.
There were glowing bioluminescent veins on the walls of the tunnels, quite similar to how the insides of the centipedes looked.
I am guessing that these are not ordinary centipedes that have mutated, instead, they were engineered into mutating.
So, someone must have done that and my money’s on the aliens.
After this test, they will probably improve those creatures. Next time, they won’t be so easy to kill.
So, we also have to up our training game." Leng Pan thought clearly about their circumstances.
"While they reorganize and improve, we have to do the same too. You saw how easily those things can be killed using fire or steam. Basically, anything hot.
So, we have to recruit more fire ability users. This way, we won’t have to worry about having enough fire to attack them in case they came in droves." Lu Zhen said seriously.
However, I am guessing they have a way to regulate the temperature in the surrounding space around them to avoid too much heat.
The place they were hiding below is quite cool. The heat on the surface cannot reach them." Leng Pan added helpfully.
