Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 360: The Threat Underground (2)
Everyone understood that she had entered the space bangle for something.
Three minutes later, she reappeared with a change of clothes.
She was now wearing a tight bodysuit made of the material they had found in the high-tech mansion in the space bangle.
Not only could the bodysuit maintain a lower body temperature, it was also waterproof.
She wasn’t afraid of getting wet, but soaked clothes became a hindrance to movement.
Leng Pan didn’t bother leaving the apartment. She walked over to the window and opened it before jumping out without warning.
The water below formed a whirlpool and a huge wave rose to cushion her. She landed softly on the wave that lowered her to the whirlpool before she disappeared into it.
The people watching from their apartments thought that another person had decided to commit suicide, and shouts could be heard from different directions.
Leng Pan was actually surprised to realize that their community and the surrounding areas still had so many survivors.
When the military urged people to move into the safe bases for protection and their safety, she had thought that almost everyone had left.
Only now didn’t she realize that many people had hidden in their houses for various reasons creating the illusion that the buildings were empty.
It seemed that after the apocalypse started, many people still had brains and didn’t place hope on it ending soon like a normal plague.
They had taken the opportunity to stock up on supplies and hidden them. They must have thought that moving to the base would expose their supplies, so they had chosen to hide instead.
Now that such a long time had passed, their supplies had probably run out or dwindled fast. They had no choice but to come out because they would have to go search for supplies soon or go and join the safe base.
"Lu Tao, is there an open entryway here into the underground tunnels?" Leng Pan realized that she hadn’t asked about where to enter the tunnels through and created a vacuum around her, separating herself from the water then asked her brother-in-law for guidance.
Even though she was already under water, Lu Tao had super hearing and would definitely hear her question.
Soon, the watch on her wrist vibrated. Lu Tao had sent her a location. She didn’t have super hearing and wouldn’t hear what was said from the surface but a message could be sent.
She looked at the screen on the watch and immediately knew where to go.
She swam towards a specific spot in between buildings.
There was a man hole cover there. An indication that it was an entry to the city’s sewer system.
However, the sewer line was no longer working and all the sewerage water and waste had already been washed away by the water that had seeped into the ground long ago.
Others might find it difficult to open the cover due to the pressure from the water creating resistance, but Leng Pan could just blend with the water and control it. So, there was no resistance when she lifted the cover.
She put it aside and lowered herself into the sewer system that was also connected to the tunnels that had been dug God knows when.
Just as she landed, the watch vibrated again with a new message.
’Actually, there is another entry point under the collapsed parking lot two buildings from here.’ Lu Tao had found another place to enter from that didn’t include swimming in sewer lines, but it was already too late.
Leng Pan was already in the sewer. Besides, she didn’t mind at all. In the last apocalypse, she had been in worse places.
She simply typed an ok sign on the screen and walked forward. She was still isolating herself from the water surrounding her while making sure that anything around her wouldn’t be able to sense her.
However, she had still underestimated the abilities of those creatures. How could she forget when she had faced them in her previous life?
She had just been hoping that they weren’t as much of a threat as they were in the last apocalypse.
The ground under her feet had numerous cracks, probably from the collapse of buildings and structures caused by the falling meteorites hitting the ground.
Steam seemed to be coming out of the concrete she was stepping on, somewhat confirming her earlier guess.
There was heat coming from under the ground, which had accelerated the melting of the ice formed after many weeks of extremely cold weather.
For some reason, the light from the sun above in the sky was still able to penetrate the water and mud and light the sewer line.
Suddenly, on the side of the wall, a jagged fissure opened up between two sunken concrete slabs.
It must have been created when meteorites destroyed some buildings on the surface.
There was a metallic smell seeping out of the fissure, which was wrong in every way.
Leng Pan wanted to know what was beyond, so she crouched down and placed her hand on the ground before letting her water ability activated.
The water molecules around her seemed to respond to her presence and that beyond the fissure did the same.
Leng Pan lifted her hand and stood up.
She slid between the two slabs and entered the fissure.
In an instant, the temperature dropped. A complete opposite of the heat roasting people on the surface.
The tunnel wasn’t dark as she had expected. Bioluminescent veins lined the walls of the tunnel, lighting up the way.
They didn’t look organic because they were too streamlined and well arranged. They were definitely engineered.
Leng Pan moved soundlessly, her steps barely disturbing the shallow water beneath her boots.
Then, her steps came to a sudden halt as the tunnel before her widened into a hollow chamber.
Something at the center of the chamber was feeding on a fast diminishing human corpse.
The smell of blood was pungent in the enclosed space.
But the creature seemed to be enjoying its meal without a care for the bad smell.
It resembled a centipede, except that its body was plated and segmented with translucent armor that revealed faintly glowing organs beneath it.
Its head split into petal-like mandibles as it consumed the remains of the already unidentifiable human.
