Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 359: Threat Under the Ground
At that moment, a distant roar echoed through the sky. It was distorted, low, and definitely not human.
Listening to that roar, Leng Pan knew that they didn’t have much time to prepare.
Between the evolving zombies, plotting traitors, and cunning aliens, they had to move quickly and build an army.
She turned around, leaving Lu Zhen’s arms and faced the crowd that was still whispering to each other.
"Meeting adjourned. Go and start your preparations."
"Yes, Commander." It was as if even those who hadn’t been in the first apocalypse had been infected.
All of them addressed Leng Pan as Commander in unison.
A shallow smile finally appeared on Leng Pan’s face since waking up that morning.
As the people walked out one by one, cool air formed by melting ice was blown within the room by fans, providing temporary relief for a disaster that was just beginning.
The distance roar never came again. Moreover, no other sounds followed.
No zombies rushing towards the spot because of the noise that usually attracted them or the heat signature of a living creature.
It just became eerily quiet. Something unusual in the apocalypse that was filled with the noise of humans moving around to scavenge, especially now that the ice had melted.
People should be on boats running to the nearest flooded stores, hotels, or institutions to search for any food or other supplies overlooked before.
Zombies should have gained mobility after the extreme cold ended and should be roaming even in the water to find the nearest prey.
However, it was so quiet as if every creature, zombie or human was afraid to move.
"Lu Tao." Leng Pan called out to her young brother-in-law as she walked back to the living room and sat down.
The place now appeared spacious after the other teammates had left.
"Can you scan the underground again? Focus on a one or two kilometer radius. Or just scan as far as your ability will allow you.
Let’s see if you can find out what is moving under the water." She instructed seriously, shifting into Command mode all of a sudden.
"Yes ma’am." Lu Tao replied instinctively, then caught himself and smiled sheepishly.
The others in the room laughed despite the situation.
It was fun and gratifying to watch Leng Pan change from the young heiress she was to a commander who could lead an army.
Although Li Yunjia and the other elders knew that this came from her experience in the last apocalypse, they still acknowledged her change.
Lu Tao’s pupils dilated as his ability activated.
His X-ray vision penetrated the walls of their building and landed on the fast receding water outside.
He noticed how the water seemed to be sucked by something as it went down too quickly.
It had only been a short time and it was already on the fifth floor.
At this rate, they will be able to see the ground by evening.
This was good, but also scary because it meant that something more dangerous had been born.
Lu Tao’s vision didn’t linger on the water surface for long before going further into the water and to the ground.
He could see the mud on the ground moving as if something was swimming in the mud instead of water.
"There is indeed something on the ground, but it’s buried in the mud.
Let me focus more." Lu Tao informed quietly before concentrating his sight on one spot where he noticed more vigorous movement.
"It looks like a centipede. But it’s so big." Lu Tao said with tremor in his voice.
One could imagine what he had seen.
"But I can’t be sure. With the mud sticking to its body, it’s hard to tell what it is exactly." He added.
"It’s okay. You’ve already done a good job." Leng Pan praised.
"Is that all?" She asked again.
"No." Lu Tao replied with a gasp.
"I guess we won’t need to map and dig retreat tunnels underground." He added solemnly.
"What do you mean?" Lu Zhen asked in a deep voice.
"There are tunnels dug underground. It’s not naturally formed. It’s definitely man-made and it’s a complete network that goes beyond where my ability can reach." Lu Tao informed.
Leng Pan turned to look at Lu Zhen, who also did the same thing.
"Could it be..." She started but stopped, because she didn’t want to imagine what she was thinking would come true.
"It should be." Lu Zhen confirmed her guess anyway.
It was no use denying it. They would have to face it anyway.
"What are the two of you talking about? Can’t you be more specific? Why do tunnels being dug underground make you react so much?" Uncle Li asked, irritation could be heard in his voice, which was rare.
"Let’s confirm it first before saying anything. In case it causes unnecessary panic.
I will go and see what’s happening below." Lu Zhen offered and stood up immediately.
"No." Leng Pan refused without a second thought.
"I’ll go." She said.
"I won’t let you take that risk. I will go and scout the tunnels first." Lu Zhen insisted, something he never does as he always does what his wife wants.
"With your fire ability, if you step into those tunnels, they will notice you instantly.
I can blend into water, remember? Now I can basically merge my presence with the water molecules around me, making me undetectable." Leng Pan argued.
Lu Zhen thought about it and agreed that what his wife said was true, but he was still not comfortable letting her go underground alone.
"How about a time limit? If I don’t come back up in half an hour, you can come down to look for me. How does that sound?" Leng Pan had to compromise, otherwise Lu Zhen would never let her go.
"Alright, but be careful. Those things can be dangerous. Especially if there are many of them." Lu Zhen added.
"Don’t worry. I won’t let myself get hurt." Leng Pan promised before disappearing on the spot.
