Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 331: The Strange Vines
"What about the others?" Lu Zhen asked before turning back to look outside the window.
In fact, Lu Tao had already started climbing the ice stairs.
"Let them come in. Just in case this is a trap set by those aliens. If we are separated by the building then it would be challenging to protect them if something happens later." Leng Pan kept feeling that something was wrong in that place and she always trusted her gut.
Thus, Lu Zhen walked back to the open window and waved at the people still standing on the surface of the ice.
Getting the signal, the team started to climb the stairs in a hurry.
They had already gotten used to walking on stairs covered in ice and could already balance their bodies instinctively so that they don’t slip and fall.
Once everyone was inside the break room, Leng Pan absorbed the energy holding the stairs back into her body and the staircase melted away.
They then closed the window, just in case it attracted other people there.
"Let’s split up into groups and search this place. But be careful, something doesn’t feel right here. Once you find anything suspicious, don’t act alone, inform the others." Leng Pan instructed before taking her husband’s hand and leading the way.
"We will go down to start searching on the first floor. A couple groups can go up while the others take other floors.
Let’s meet here in one hour." Leng Pan added before walking towards the stairs leading to the lower floors.
The others also split into groups and each group headed towards one floor.
Since it was a skin care company, each floor had some products that they collected.
Because each floor also held a different department, there was a break room in each, thus, there was no lack of snacks and things like coffee, bottled water, and tea.
Everything useful they found was packed in boxes and placed in the corridor outside the door.
This way, Leng Pan would collect them as she came back up and put them in her space.
The floor with the most skin care products was the quality control department where they had samples of products of all types brought there for quality testing.
The products there weren’t limited to sunscreen, but others such as face cream, whitening cream, hand creams, and others.
They were all packed in boxes and placed in the corridor as well.
Surprisingly, they didn’t encounter a single zombie there. It was as if there was no one in that building when the apocalypse started, but that was absolutely impossible.
Even if it had been a holiday, there would still be people who worked overtime and extra shifts.
When they reached the first floor, Leng Pan and Lu Zhen found that like every other office building, this was the lobby and reception area.
There was more furniture than anything else, but Leng Pan had learned not to waste anything, so she put all the chairs, tables, and sofas in the space bangle.
However, they noticed something different immediately after clearing all the bulky furniture.
There appeared to be vines snaking through the walls, including the ceiling and moving to the upper floors.
They hadn’t noticed this before because the vines were almost the same color as the walls.
It was as if they were camouflaging themselves and making themselves invisible.
The vines had varying thickness with the thickest being the size of an adult’s arm.
There were also thinner ones that were the size of a pinky finger making them look easy to snap and break.
However, these very simple and harmless looking vines gave Leng Pan a bad feeling.
"This is not an ordinary vine. It’s probably responsible for the lack of zombies in this building." Lu Zhen commented as he scrutinized the vines.
"I think so too. Let’s go and meet up with the others before we decide what to do." Leng Pan didn’t want to attack the vine without a plan.
The fact that there wasn’t a zombie there proved that the vine wasn’t simple and couldn’t be attacked.
"Okay, be careful." Lu Zhen agreed with Leng Pan about the unpredictability of the vines.
It was better to ensure the safety of their teammates first before making a decision on how to deal with the vines.
It was only when they had discovered the vines that they realized that those vines were actually almost covering up the entire building.
They were on the walls and in some places, on the floors. It was as if they were everywhere.
As they climbed the stairs on each floor, the two were cautiously observing their surroundings.
They collected the boxes of supplies left in the corridors as they went up.
When they reached the fifth floor, which was the quality control department that had the most supplies, they found the group that was responsible for that section coming out of the offices with the final boxes of packed skin care products.
"Are you guys done with the lower floors?" Xu Man’s wife asked curiously.
She had been assigned to this group together with her husband and a few of the people who had escaped from the underground lab in the military base.
"Yeah, we are done. Let’s go up, we need to discuss something." Leng Pan replied solemnly before waving her hand and putting the boxes away.
Seeing how serious she was when she said that, the others looked at each other and nodded then followed behind the two leaders.
As they climbed the floors, Leng Pan and Lu Zhen observed the vines and finally realized that they were basically everywhere.
Moreover, some had become so thick they were the size of an adult’s two arms.
When they arrived at the floor they had agreed to meet up with the rest, Leng Pan found that the people who had been searching the upper floors had brought the supplies down.
After placing all the boxes in the space bangle, Leng Pan turned to Lu Zhen and asked, "Should we let them leave first?"
