Chapter 28: Chapter 28: If You Don’t Love Her, Why Do You Still Kiss Her?

"What kind of scheme could I possibly have? Jonas Hawthorne, is it that in your eyes, everything I do is some kind of plot against you?"

She practically growled the words out!

Why is it that no matter what she does, he always manages to find fault?

Just like the old days—she went to love him, but he always thought she was doing it to hurt him...

"Isn’t that so?" Jonas shot back without even thinking.

Raine Sinclair reached up and rubbed her temples, taking a deep breath to calm herself. She genuinely didn’t want to keep fighting with him, so she just said flatly, "Forget it, believe whatever you want. Now move—I want to go home."

The moment she said it, Raine froze for just a second.

This was always the line Jonas used on her. She never thought the day would come when she said it to him...

Jonas’s brow knitted tightly, then he switched topics. "You refused the Keane Family contract just to get back at me?"

Leo Keane still hadn’t gotten the Sinclair Group contract by now, and he’d griped about it to Jonas more times than anyone could count.

Plus, Sinclair Group’s handling of the bidding had caused a total citywide uproar.

Raine hadn’t expected Jonas to bring this up. She paused, then sneered, "Revenge? Wow, you really are flattering yourself. Karma doesn’t need me to lift a finger."

As she spoke, Raine pointed dramatically upward. "Heaven’s watching, you know. Careful you don’t get struck by lightning."

She tossed out those biting words, yanked her hand free of Jonas, jumped into her car, started the engine, and tore off—without even a glance back!

Leaving Jonas Hawthorne standing alone in the wind, dazed and empty for ages.

He had no idea that, barely a moment after that heated fight, Raine Sinclair, driving away, suddenly burst into tears.

She slapped the steering wheel and cursed helplessly, "Jonas Hawthorne, you’re such a fucking bastard, do you know that!"

They’d already divorced. He doesn’t love her. So why did he have to kiss her?

Why does he keep blocking her...

She’d finally managed to calm her heart—why did he have to come and mess everything up again?

——

When Raine got home to the Sinclair Family, she was utterly exhausted.

Mama Chambers brought her hot milk as usual, and mentioned some gossip she’d picked up at the Hawthorne villa.

"Miss, I asked the Hawthorne servants. None of them said sir ever had a serious illness. Maybe you misunderstood?"

"Nothing?" Raine frowned, certain she hadn’t misheard. Leo Keane said those things with Mason Sullivan right there.

But nothing turned up in her search...

Which could only mean Jonas Hawthorne kept the whole thing secret, not wanting anyone to know.

Her included.

If that’s the case, then there’s no point in her holding onto anything.

With that thought, Raine finally said, "No need to look into it anymore, Mama Chambers. Did you bring all my stuff back?"

"I’m glad you can let it go, miss." Mama Chambers brightened, but then sighed a little dejectedly, "Uh... everything was thrown out by the new lady. I couldn’t really find much when I went over there..."

"Candace Ford threw out my things?" Raine raised an eyebrow, her face instantly darkening.

She’d just left, and Candace couldn’t wait to start bossing around as the lady of the house?

"Yes..." Mama Chambers replied, a bit hesitant.

Raine clenched her teeth, silent for a long while before finally saying, "Fine, it’s not like anything in particular mattered. Let it go."

Staying angry over all this would only be a waste of her life.

Mama Chambers, hearing this, finally relaxed and broke out in a smile. "Miss, drink up your milk and get some rest while it’s still warm."

"Okay." Raine nodded. As she turned away to drink the milk, Mama Chambers quietly left the room.

The door had barely closed when her phone vibrated.

She picked it up—it was a text from an unknown number.

She opened it. It was a photo—or more precisely, an ultrasound scan slip—with Candace Ford’s name on it.

Raine stared, brain not quite keeping up before a second message came through.

[This is Jonas and my baby. Cute, right?]

With that kind of brazen provocation, who else could it be but Candace herself?

Raine gazed blankly at the blown-up ultrasound slip, unconsciously brushing her hand over her own belly.

It’s just a kid, right?

As if she’s the only one who has one!

On the other end, Candace waited ages after sending those two texts—still no reply. She felt so unsatisfied.

She’d sent the ultrasound scan for Jonas’s baby—how could Raine not react at all?

Shouldn’t the other woman be jealous and lose her mind?

After a while without a response, Candace shot off another text.

Raine, still out of it, felt her phone buzz again in her hand.

She glanced down—the third message had arrived.

[By the way, I should probably thank you for giving me such a perfect villa for my pregnancy!]

At this, Raine felt that even the best self-restraint wouldn’t help her now.

Seriously... again and again with this provocative crap. Aren’t you done yet?

Her slender fingers danced across the screen—Raine shot back a reply in seconds.

Candace lit up immediately at the notification.

Because Raine was finally fighting back!

But when Candace looked down and read the message, the veins on her temple nearly burst.

[Looks like Jonas didn’t come home again tonight, leaving you bored out of your mind with nothing better to text about. Alone in that empty house, huh? Poor thing.]

Candace was furious, about to fire back—but found her message was blocked, undelivered!

"Damn it!" She nearly shattered a tooth as she ground her jaw, throwing her phone down in a rage!

Because Raine nailed it exactly...

Jonas really hadn’t come home all night.

Truth be told, Jonas had been avoiding her from the very beginning.

If she hadn’t forced herself to get pregnant, things would never have gone this smoothly.

Candace took a deep breath and pinned all her hopes on the life growing inside her.

"Baby, you have to be born safe and sound. With you here, Mommy finally has some leverage..."

——

After blocking Candace, Raine went straight to bed.

If this were before, she’d have spent the entire night wide awake.

But the doctor had told her that bad sleep badly affected her baby’s development.

After all, she wasn’t alone anymore—she had to think of her child first.

The next morning.

Barely after dawn, Mason Sullivan showed up to drive her to work.

Raine was puzzled as soon as they met. "Why are you picking me up today?"

There’s a driver at home; this was kind of overkill.

But Mason didn’t think so at all.

He had on cool aviators, personally opened the car door for Raine, and bowed like a true gentleman. "Hop in, Princess Raine!"

Raine instantly broke out in goosebumps, darted a glance at the sky, and muttered, "The sun isn’t rising in the west, is it? You’re acting so weird today!"
