Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Don’t Cry

If he hadn’t initiated it, she probably wouldn’t be willing to say a single word to him for the rest of her life.

And when all of her dissatisfaction and resentment were vented, Raine finally couldn’t hold back her tears...

She looked up at Jonas Hawthorne, who was so close, and suddenly found her vision was terribly blurry.

The young boy from back then, deeply imprinted in her mind with his god-like grace and handsome looks, no longer had a clear outline.

The tense atmosphere between the two was momentarily diminished.

Jonas gazed down at the tears on the woman’s face in his arms, feeling a sharp pang in a certain part of his heart.

He had never thought that bringing Candace Ford back would make her so upset...

She had never cried so vulnerably in front of him.

In his memory, she always seemed to be smiling, telling him everything was okay...

Only at this moment did she seem to have shed all her armor, crying like a child.

It was as if a basin of water had been poured over him, and all of Jonas’s anger vanished.

He released the grip he had on her, his long fingers lightly brushing over her fair face, his crimson eyes filled anew with tenderness.

"Don’t cry."

He spoke, only to realize how hoarse his voice had become.

Unfortunately, Raine didn’t need this comfort, which seemed like charity.

Who cares for tenderness that comes too late?

"Smack!" She flung his hand away, shouting angrily, "Don’t touch me! Jonas Hawthorne, from now on, we go our separate ways, with no more entanglement!"

"Raine, I..." Jonas opened his mouth but suddenly didn’t know what to say.

He had never seen her cry in such a pitiful manner.

"Don’t call me! Since you choose to divorce me, I accept! From now on, please don’t appear in my world again! If possible... I’d rather I never knew you!"

With those few words tossed aside, Raine didn’t know where the strength came from to push Jonas Hawthorne forcefully away and quickly run off!

Jonas felt an emptiness in his arms, and when he returned to his senses, he saw nothing but Raine’s retreating figure...

In a part of his soul, it seemed something had been forcibly torn away.

The tearing pain began to spread throughout his body.

Especially in his heart, where the dull ache slowly turned sharp...

His jaw clenched tightly, and Jonas pressed forcefully against his heart, his long eyebrows furrowing deeply.

Raine had left, so why does his heart hurt so much...

——

When Silas Linton entered, he saw his grandson’s face filled with pain.

She sighed gently, recalling how Raine had run away crying, and realized these two kids probably wouldn’t have a chance.

The original intention was to try to reconnect them, and this time she thick-skinnedly invited Raine home, but she hadn’t expected... this outcome.

"Oh." Unable to stop himself from sighing again, Silas glanced at the mostly untouched food on the table, feeling thoroughly disheartened, "Years ago, when I arranged for you two to marry, I thought it was the right thing... I never expected it to turn out like this. Maybe I should’ve listened to Raine back then; if you really didn’t want this marriage, I shouldn’t have forced you. Now that I think about it, it’s my fault."

Silas felt full of remorse.

She didn’t think her judgment was wrong in choosing a person; Raine indeed was kind-hearted, perhaps she really was not destined for the Hawthorne Family.

However, just as Silas finished speaking, Jonas suddenly came to his senses, surprised and puzzled, "Wasn’t it Raine who threatened to get married?"

"Who told you that?" Silas frowned, as if hearing a joke, "Raine wanted to marry you at that time, but later she told me she didn’t want to see you unhappy and begged me not to put too much pressure on you."

Upon hearing this, Jonas fell silent.

Silas continued, "Speaking of which, it’s my fault, too. You were getting on in years at the time, and I wanted to see you getting married and starting a career early."

Ignoring Raine’s words, Silas stubbornly forced her grandson into marriage.

Before Raine appeared, Jonas Hawthorne had no women around him for years, which worried his grandfather, who even resorted to drastic measures, ensuring the Hawthorne legacy would have descendants.

Clearly, this was something that wouldn’t happen unless absolutely necessary.

Fortunately, Raine appeared later.

Silas knew this girl loved their Jonas, which prompted her intervention to matchmake them.

Who would have thought that forcing the issue would ultimately result in such bitterness!

Jonas Hawthorne stood frozen at the revelation, "So, it was grandma’s wish."

Listening to his own words, they seemed to echo from two years ago...

Dry, pale.

He had always believed Raine used some means to force his grandma to ensure their marriage.

As it turns out...

Raine had nothing to do with it.

Yet she never explained a single word to him.

——

As he left the courtyard, the sky had completely darkened.

The night of early autumn brought a chill even to the air.

Penetrating to the bones.

Jonas Hawthorne walked a few steps forward, ready to drive away, when he heard Raine’s voice from afar.

"Mom, I’m fine. Yes, I had dinner outside, you and dad don’t have to wait for me. Yes, I’m heading home now."

It seemed she was talking on the phone with her family.

Perhaps because of this, she hadn’t left yet.

Jonas’s gaze deepened, and his previously empty heart seemed suddenly filled with something.

When Raine hung up the phone, she quickly sensed something amiss behind her and turned to see it was Jonas Hawthorne.

In the exchange of glances, all the previous admiration and recent resentment vanished into thin air.

What remains was utter estrangement and indifference.

Without a word, Raine opened the car door, ready to get into her own vehicle.

But in the next second, Jonas walked over and reached out to hold onto her car door.

"What do you want now?" Raine reflexively retorted.

After all the quarrels, all the disputes.

And the man who used to hide from her every day, preferring to live on Mars, what’s he up to now?

Jonas’s dark eyes slightly sank; even he didn’t know what he was doing, only his heart wanted to keep her...

But holding onto her, what could he do, what should he do?

He was clueless.

Thus, he blurted out, "Why did you come to see grandma again?"

Even though his heart didn’t truly mean that.

But aside from this, there was no better topic.

Raine frowned hearing this, "It was grandma who asked me to come, get it straight!"

She said this while trying to push him away, only to find no matter how hard she tried, the man wouldn’t budge!

"Still calling her grandma? Hmph, who knows what you’re plotting?" Jonas sneered indifferently, his expression cold, yet his hand on Raine’s car door showed no signs of letting go.

His words infuriated Raine even more!
