Adrienne didn’t take long to find Myrtle, much to her relief. She didn’t think she could socialize with others now as the past few days had been quite taxing. She greeted Myrtle’s mother before taking her best friend away. She was relieved not to see Alistair anywhere, and Adrienne didn’t trust she could keep her composure in his presence. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

"What took you so long, Addie? I thought you’d never show up!" Myrtle complained but hooked her arms with Adrienne’s, leading her to where no one could eavesdrop on them. Hunter was following behind them.

"Something came up, plus, I need to give Aunt Camilla and Elise some false hope, don’t I? Seeing their hopes crumble tonight will be the icing on the cake."

Adrienne would ruin all their plans since they regarded this banquet with utmost importance.

"Hmm... but you have to be careful now, Addie. Everyone’s eyes are on you. I fear they might try to do something to get even with you." Myrtle reminded her as they settled at the farthest corner.

The banquet hall was glowing with light yellow chandeliers and was lightly scented by the roses Rosemary grew from her garden. Waiters in vested uniforms shuffled among the guests, serving the best quality wine Camilla could find in the market and savory food.

And then they watched as Old Master Jiang went up to the podium and greeted their guests. Adrienne tuned his words out as she had no interest whatsoever in the old man’s feelings. For the Jiang family, she felt no pity or sympathy. A round of applause followed once her grandfather finished his speech. However, a commotion outside the banquet hall took everyone’s attention.

Adrienne hid her wicked smile behind a wine glass. It was payback time.

Startled, Old Master Jiang asked. "What’s happening outside?"

One of the security personnel answered him and said, "A couple claiming to be Madam Camilla’s parents are causing a scene outside after having been denied entry. We have no idea who let them in, but we think they sneaked in when the banquet officially started."

"Addie, what’s going on?" Myrtle whispered to Adrienne.

"Why do you assume I know the answer?" Adrienne raised a brow at her best friend, while Hunter only glanced at her.

Myrtle scoffed. "I know you, Addie. You won’t just sit still and do nothing. You must have prepared something."

"I’ve got to hit them where it hurts the most. Just enjoy the performance, Myrtle."

Camila, who had heard who was causing the commotion outside, felt dizzy. She felt the world was spinning too fast and her meticulously planned banquet was gradually shattering before her. Who would dare to sabotage her like this?!

Her eyes scanned the crowd and found the red enchantress who stole the night. Adrienne was speaking with Myrtle Han next to that accursed bodyguard of hers. Their eyes met and Adrienne raised her flute with a smile for a greeting.

Raging flames filled Camilla’s eyes. This little bitch had ruined her plan again!

Suddenly, two old-aged couples entered the banquet hall and yelled Camilla’s name. She shivered next to her husband and held his arm.

"You ungrateful bitch! We raised you and sent you to school many years ago, but as soon as you married into the Jiang family, you turned your back on us! Not a single cent was sent to support us!" The old woman cried out and was shedding tears. Her husband held her shoulder and shot Camilla a fierce look.

"We aren’t asking that much from you, Camilla. Your Mom and I worked hard to provide you with everything. You never heard us complain, not even once! Now that we’re old and can’t work anymore, we can only rely on you for help. Your mother already has diabetes, and I have a weak heart. We cannot collect scraps anymore to sell. Is asking you for a little money for us to buy food and medicine too much?"

He looked around and saw Cayden and Elise together. His face brightened.

"Look, even our grandchildren are here!" His wife exclaimed. She tried to reach out to Elise, but Elise loudly shrieked and cowered behind her brother.

"It must have been hard for you, Grandpa." Adrienne stepped forward and took the old man’s hand.

Others would have kept their distance from this elderly couple as they reeked and looked dirty.

"W-who are you?" The old man asked cautiously.

"Ah, forgive me. Where’s my manners? I’m Adrienne Jiang. I’m Aunt Camilla’s stepdaughter. Please allow me to lessen your burdens. Tonight is my grandfather’s birthday and I’m sure he won’t mind if I extend a goodwill gesture to both of you."

The elderly couple hesitated for a moment. Their eyes were then drawn to Camilla and their grandchildren.

The old man laughed bitterly to himself. "Even the stepdaughter treats us better than the child we gave birth to. Camilla must have really despised us for being so poor."

The guests started murmuring to each other again. No matter how outstanding a person was, filial piety toward parents was highly important.

With Hunter’s help, the elderly couple was led away. Adrienne’s reputation immediately improved at the expense of her stepmother.

"Grandpa, please continue the party. I will deal with the problem." Adrienne told Old Master Jiang, giving Camila a mocking look before leaving.

Old Master Jiang was impressed at how quick-witted Adrienne was, but he wasn’t pleased with his new daughter-in-law. He summoned Lewis and Camilla, together with their children to the study.

Old Madam Jiang couldn’t contain her anger anymore and slapped Camilla.

"How many times does my Jiang family have to suffer because of you?!" She cried out. "If Addie hadn’t stepped forward earlier, the damage could have been more serious!"

"I-I..." Camilla was too stunned to stay a word. This was the first time her mother-in-law had hit her.

"Father, are you treating Camilla like this because she came from a humble background? It’s not like we expected her parents to come!" Lewis defended his wife in front of his father.
