Chapter 72: Little Sparrows (2)

A knock on Adrienne’s door made the three of them fall silent. They looked at each other, wondering if someone had overheard their conversation.

"Miss Addie, it’s me." They heard Uncle Mo’s voice from outside.

"Enter." Adrienne answered while Mother Wang sighed in relief. It would be troublesome if it was one of the maids Camilla employed to spy on Adrienne.

Uncle Mo entered at once and delivered a small letter to her. He looked as if he had rushed to see her.

"This came from your Uncle Reese. It must be important."

Adrienne eyed it for a moment. She gestured for Mother Wang to take it and open it for her. An elegantly written message in a small card was revealed. She could recognize the handwriting as her Uncle Reese’s.

"The mother sparrow wails at her empty nest."

Her eyes widened, her hands trembled a little as she read the passage again and again. Adrienne’s mind went blank for a moment. However, she knew her Uncle Reese would never lie to her.

She lowered the ice pack on her face. The gears in her head turned, trying to imagine possible scenarios. But even if her thoughts ran a thousand miles, she couldn’t imagine a positive outcome of this newly obtained information.

Adrienne placed the card back into the envelope and gave it to Hunter. The man took the card and slid it inside his black coat.

"Destroy this evidence for me, Hunter. I trust that you won’t allow this to fall in the wrong hands."

Hunter waited for her to explain the contents of the card. Even Mother Wang and Uncle Mo wanted to know what their Master Reese had said.

As if knowing what the three were thinking, Adrienne sighed. Since they were here, might as well tell them what her Uncle Reese found out.

"Uncle Reese found out that the tomb, where my brother’s remains were laid to rest, is empty. There’s no child or corpse inside the casket. Mom has been grieving over an empty tomb for years."

Mother Wang covered her mouth in shock, while Uncle Mo couldn’t help but shake her head in disappointment.

"Madam and the Young Master have greatly suffered. How could the heavens allow this to happen? She didn’t deserve any of this at all." He grumbled.

Meanwhile, Hunter remained impassive as he was deep in his own thoughts.

"But if the Young Master wasn’t there, where could he possibly be?"

"How would Miss Addie know the answer to that question? If Master Reese hadn’t taken the initiative to investigate Madam Rose’s first childbirth, we wouldn’t know that the Young Master is missing!" Uncle Mo chimed in.

Mother Wang started to shed a few tears. Madam Rose wasn’t here with them, so she would cry for her instead.

"They must have abducted the young master when Madam Rose passed out from exhaustion. Mr. Jiang waited until she woke up in the recovery room before telling her that the baby was stillborn." She speculated.

None of them spoke after hearing that. Each of them deep in their own thoughts. They were all thinking of how cruel Lewis Jiang was towards his children with Madam Rose.

"Thank goodness Madam Rose remained awake while she was giving birth to Miss Addie. She was able to hold her immediately and refused to allow anyone to take her away. Mr. Jiang couldn’t even hold you. She must have been deeply traumatized for not being able to see the young master." Mother Wang commented in between her sobs.

Uncle Mo nodded in agreement.

"What do you plan to do now, Miss Addie?" He asked their Miss.

"Nothing. What can I even do? I have neither the resources nor any leads to find my brother. Since Uncle Reese took on the job, let’s hope he’ll be able to unravel the truth."

"Okay. Let’s do that," Mother Wang dried her tears with the back of her hand. They needed to be strong for their Miss Addie, now more than ever.

"Please don’t mention this to anyone. I’m not sure how Mom would take this news, but if one day she wakes up, I’ll tell her the truth."

Since their Miss had already made a decision, they could only follow her. Mother Wang and Uncle Mo bid them good night and turned to leave. Before she stepped out of the room, Mother Wang promised to bring Adrienne and Hunter’s dinner up to their rooms soon.

"Such a twist of fate." Hunter whispered as Adrienne remained silent, her head continued resting on the back of her hand.

"I do not know whether to hope he’s alive or not. If he’s alive, he might be targeted once again by Father and Aunt Camilla." She answered.

"If he knew what they’d done, he would surely curse them to the heavens."

"I guess any child would. To think they would do that to an innocent baby." Adrienne sighed. "Anyway, let’s stop here. I’m really tired as we both have had a long day. You may return to your quarters."

Hunter gave her a customary bow and stepped out of her room. He went to his room and walked towards the closet, opening a hidden compartment. He placed Adrienne’s bag inside and shut it securely.

He then opened the french doors in his room and stepped out of the balcony. Hunter glanced at where Adrienne’s room was with conflicted emotions. Adrienne was still young, but she already suffered this much. He couldn’t imagine how scared she was on her own, without someone to rely on.

He pulled out the envelope she handed him earlier and read its contents.

"The mother sparrow wails at her empty nest."

Hunter stared at it for a long moment and pulled out a lighter from his pants. He then lit the card and the envelope on fire until there was nothing left.

He leaned against the railing and looked up at the moon that was slightly covered by a thin wisp of gray clouds. The night breeze ruffled his thick midnight hair as if trying to douse off the burning hatred he’d been nursing in his heart.

After a few minutes, he decided to return inside as he whispered softly to the wind, "The young sparrow has returned to its nest."
