Chapter 71: Little Sparrows (1)

Hunter was trembling in rage next to Adrienne. He was itching to confront her father and teach Lewis Jiang a lesson, just like he did to Cayden. However, his miss’s welfare was more important than his revenge at this moment. He could only rein his anger and accompany her to the third level.

They were walking through the empty hallway when they spotted a woman in her fifties leaving Adrienne’s room. She had a head full of white hair and was a little overweight for her height. The woman beamed a smile towards them, then changed to a horrified expression when she saw Adrienne’s swollen cheek.

She rushed towards Adrienne and examined it up close.

"Miss! Did Mr. Jiang hit you again? I thought he would stop doing this to you once you turned eighteen! Obviously things haven’t changed a bit." She held Adrienne’s arm while Hunter opened the door of her room for them.

Adrienne took a seat on an armchair next to french doors leading to a balcony, while Mother Wang knelt before her to check if there was blood. Fortunately there was none.

"Mother Wang, do you mean to say this is a common occurrence for Miss Addie?" Hunter asked. The impression that the Jiang family had on him was beyond salvation now.

Mother Wang glanced at him, then bit her lip.

"Mr. Jiang used to hit Miss Addie because of her disobedience even when Madam was still around. Madam never found out because Miss Addie begged me not to tell her. She didn’t want her parents to fight because of her."

Adrienne rested her forehead on her right hand and sighed. Mother Wang excused herself to get some ice packs from the kitchen.

"It’s really a wonder how you could live in a place like this when everyone is against you. I grew up without a father, but if I were to have someone like Lewis Jiang as my father, I would rather not have one." Hunter commented.

"How lucky..." Adrienne chuckled as half of her face was hidden from Hunter’s view. "It would be nice not to have a father. I only need Mom."

"Why didn’t you tell your Mom before? She might have left your father if she knew he was abusing you." Hunter believed that no matter how patient a woman was, most of them had a bottomline, which was their children. There was no way Rosemary Zhao would allow anyone to hurt her daughter.

Adrienne sat up straight and faced him.

"I was young and foolish back then. I tried my best to impress my father and earn his acknowledgement. I studied hard like Ayla, but my grades barely improved. I begged Mom to enroll me in a violin class which I excelled in later, but my Father didn’t even bother to come to my first recital. As a young girl, I was confused. I simply couldn’t understand why he was cold to me. In the end, I stopped wasting my time and didn’t care whether I got his attention or not."

Hunter nodded. "Yes, that’s a real waste of time. However, I noticed he treats Elise Jiang differently."

"Why, of course. Elise is the daughter he has with his beloved woman. How can he not dote on her? Meanwhile, I was the daughter of the woman he was forced to marry."

"How is it your fault that he didn’t have the balls to refuse their marriage?" Her bodyguard frowned. "I can’t wait to see them leave this estate."

"Father won’t give up. He would surely come up with something to put a leash on me, but I won’t let him."

Mother Wang came back with an ice pack in one hand and handed it to Adrienne. Adrienne hissed a little when she pressed it on her cheek. She then eyed a familiar box of Spotlight on her bed.

Following her miss’s gaze, Mother Wang remembered what she was supposed to tell Adrienne earlier, before she was distracted by her miss’s swollen cheek.

"Miss, you told me to sneak in your dress here without being caught by others, but Madam Camilla and Miss Sierra saw me bringing it up here." Mother Wang apologized.

"It’s alright, Mother Wang. I’ve already expected it to happen, but would you mind getting a large paper bag from my walk-in closet and transferring the red dress and the jewelry into it? I asked Miss Lin to send me another dress besides that one, so you should see two dresses in the box. Hang the other one in my wardrobe. Someone would surely try to sabotage me before the banquet."

"Miss! How can you say something like that?!" Mother Wang exclaimed. Who would dare to harm her miss?!

"Mother Wang, you have to understand. This banquet is important for Aunt Camilla and Elise. This would be the perfect chance to introduce them officially to the public as part of the family. They would surely make sure I wouldn’t ruin their plans."

Mother Wang was left speechless, but eventually agreed to execute her miss’s order. She got to work at once, bringing the Spotlight box to the walk-in closet and did what she was told to do. She came back with a large paper bag and handed it to Adrienne.

"Is there anything else you need me to do, Miss Addie?" She asked. Since her miss had a lot of enemies in this household, Mother Wang decided to help Adrienne to the best of her abilities.

She regretted not being able to protect her Madam Rose, but she won’t fail for Adrienne this time. When she heard about the sudden change in their miss’s temperament from Uncle Mo, she was skeptical at first, but now she believed it.

Adrienne took a peek inside the bag and smiled with satisfaction.

"No, this is more than enough, Mother Wang. Thanks so much!" She turned and faced Hunter and handed the bag to him.

"This will be in your care until the day of the banquet. There’s no way they will suspect that you’re hiding it."

"I understand." Her bodyguard replied, taking the bag from her.
