Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 67: Repaying One’s Gratitude (1)
Adrienne was half asleep when Lennox returned. She expected him to wake her up but who knew he would rest his head opposite her, his warm breath tickling her face instead? She suddenly felt conscious of being too close to this man. She wondered what Lennox was thinking at that moment. Though she was somewhat rude at him at times, this man was unexpectedly patient with her.
She then heard him say, "I hope someday, you’ll find the happiness you deserve."
Adrienne felt her chest tightening upon hearing those words. She had never considered her own happiness since her rebirth. What fueled her will to live was nothing but revenge. Her personal aspirations and happiness weren’t part of her priority list.
As soon as she felt Lennox’s gentle touch on her hair, she heard the door open. It was followed by Hunter’s accusing voice. Adrienne sighed inwardly. She never wanted Hunter to know of her deals with Lennox Qin. If he continued to meddle like this, it wouldn’t take long before he found out what was up between them. She feared Hunter would disclose this information to her Uncle Reese.
She could sense the animosity between the two and decided to end it.
"Do you really have to be so loud?" She asked, blinking her eyes a few times to clear its focus.
Adrienne briefly saw Lennox’s eyes widened and a slight blush creeping on his face. He then coughed awkwardly and looked away.
"What brings you here, Hunter?" She asked her bodyguard, feigning ignorance of the verbal spat he shared with Lennox earlier.
"You haven’t returned after two hours. I wondered if something happened." Hunter then gave Lennox a suspicious look.
"Nothing happened. I merely dozed off while waiting for him to return." Adrienne replied, yawning behind her hand.
"Someone from the hospital is also looking for you. I think it’s urgent."
That immediately took Adrienne’s attention. She looked at Lennox for explanation and he nodded in response.
"Gavin and I already dealt with that problematic nurse. She wouldn’t be able to harm your mother ever again. Go and deliver your parting gift to her. I’m sure she would regret crossing paths with you."
Adrienne stood up and left with Hunter, leaving her things for Lennox to tidy up. Lennox wanted to accompany her, but it wasn’t time to reveal their relationship yet.
When Adrienne entered her mother’s room, a hospital personnel was waiting for her.
"Miss Jiang, would you mind coming with me? A concerned citizen reported that Nurse Chen was injecting suspicious drugs on your mother. We’re very sorry that something like this happened in our hospital and we’d like to compensate you for the damages she’d caused."
Adrienne’s face turned cold. She had already expected something like this to happen. The hospital was well established within the country. So, if this kind of news reached the media, it would surely damage their reputation.
Meanwhile, next to Adrienne, Hunter clenched his fist so hard that it was enough to leave crescent marks on his palm. His expression seemed neutral, but there was a simmering rage reflected in his eyes.
"I want to confront Nurse Chen if it’s possible. I want to hear the reason why she did it to my mother."
The hospital personnel nodded and led the way for Adrienne and Hunter. He brought them to the director’s office where they found Nurse Chen receiving a reprimand. When they saw Adrienne and Hunter arrive, Nurse Chen immediately fell on her knees and rubbed her hands together.
"Miss Jiang, you have to believe me. I didn’t want to harm your mother."
"You are still saying that! We’ve already confiscated the drugs you’ve given Miss Zhao. Don’t you have any shame?!" The medical director scolded her.
Adrienne lifted her hand to stop him.
"May I have a few words with her? Please?"
The director looked unwilling but decided to leave her be. He left with his personnel, allowing Adrienne and Hunter the space to talk to Nurse Chen. Adrienne took a seat designated for the director’s guest. She crossed her legs and looked down at the nurse.
"So how much money did my brother offer you to harm my mother like this?"
Nurse Chen froze on her spot and looked at Adrienne with wide eyes. She probably didn’t expect Adrienne to know everything.
"I hope whatever amount you got from him is enough to cover your retirement plan."
"I-I didn’t mean to..."
"You didn’t mean to?" Adrienne laughed sarcastically. She was still dressed in her high school uniform but her presence was intimidating enough to make the older woman tremble.
"Miss Jiang..."
"I heard you’ll lose your medical license after this, but this isn’t enough, you know. I do hope you’ll enjoy your stay behind bars for the rest of your life. Anyway, you must be wondering why I didn’t go to Elysian as you thought I would..." Adrienne let out a sinister smile this time. "Can you guess who went there instead?"
Nurse Chen looked confused as she looked at Adrienne. So Adrienne had long uncovered the scheme, even this one.
As if knowing what she was thinking, Adrienne answered her.
"Your eldest daughter." She then let out a low laugh. "It seems that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. She easily accepted the card hoping to hook up with a rich bachelor, but Nurse Chen... you know what kind of place Elysian is, right?"
"No...no... Not my daughter! How can you do this to me?! If you are mad at me, you should punish me instead, not my daughter!" Nurse Chen cried out, tears spilling down her face.
"If you know what kind of place Elysian is, why would you send someone’s daughter there? So anyone can go down that hell hole, but not your daughter? You shouldn’t have nursed such vicious thoughts."
"You bitch! I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!"
Nurse Chen tried to pounce on Adrienne, but before she could touch her, Hunter broke her hand.
