Chapter 52: Sweetheart (1)

"There’s a limit on what I can do for you, Addie." Reese answered. "No matter what you do, don’t lose yourself and your life."

Adrienne lowered her gaze. She couldn’t tell her uncle that his warnings came too late. She had lost not only herself, but everything she ever loved as well in her previous life. How could she come clean and admit that she was a coward and foolish before? Her uncle would be disappointed if he knew what happened.

"Uncle, don’t you think you’re asking too much from me?" She didn’t expect her uncle to understand. It was too late for her to stop now.

"If it’s not for you, think of your mother, Addie. I know it’s impossible for you to forgive them, but aren’t you afraid of what you could lose in the end?"

"If I don’t do anything, I will lose everything, Uncle. They have already hurt my mother to this extent. They dare to plot her murder while she is unconscious and defenseless. Why do I still have to pretend like I’m dealing with humans? They are monsters that need to be rid of entirely. I won’t stop until I get my revenge."

Adrienne knew she could not fool her uncle for too long. She might be able to sway his emotions during their first meeting, but she knew it would be temporary and he would regain his rational mind. Reese Zhao tolerated her so far because of their blood relation and his enmity against her father. She knew he would treat her as dangerous if it wasn’t for it.

Reese stared at her. The coldness in her eyes resembled those who were blinded with rage. He needed to handle her with caution from now on. She was like a beast, struggling to break free from the chains that bound her.

"Alright. I won’t try to persuade you anymore, as long as you promise you won’t go overboard. It may take a while before I can return from the camp. You better be cautious with what leaves that pretty mouth of yours."

The thought of leaving Adrienne and his sister alone was enough to distress Reese. He would have stayed here and looked after his niece if possible, but he had left a ton of work that needed immediate attention.

"Uncle, you don’t need to rush things. Mom and I will be waiting for your return." Adrienne stopped next to his car. She had expected Reese to contact her because of the deed, but she never thought he would come in a hurry like this. But that was fine. Since Reese had seen how the Jiang family treated her with his own eyes, it would be impossible for him to leave her be.

Reese nodded and gave her one last look. Adrienne waited for him to drive away, waving her hand as his car left the estate.

When she returned inside, the rest of the Jiang family had already moved to the dining area. She scoffed inwardly and asked a helper to bring her dinner to her room instead. Adrienne wasn’t in the mood to play with them anymore, as the thought of her brother still disturbed her.

Adrienne closed the door behind her and leaned against it. She couldn’t believe her mother had endured this torture all these years. Why was she so forgiving? If there’s anything else, she should have left Lewis Jiang after he brought his bastard home. She shouldn’t have to give birth to Adrienne.

"Mom, what were you thinking? You should have left him when you had the chance."

She knew she shouldn’t blame her mother, but Rosemary had been alone back then. She didn’t have the support of the Zhao family, so how could she think straight when she had just lost her son?

Adrienne sat down on the floor and rested her head on both hands. She tried her best to remain calm throughout the day, but the emptiness she felt inside was too loud in silence. She couldn’t even hide it from her uncle.

’Calm down, Addie. This isn’t the end yet.’ She reminded herself.

Something glittering on her left hand caught her attention. She scoffed as she twisted the ring on her finger. Lennox kept surprising her. She never thought her meeting with Abigail Li would work out well. Adrienne thought her future mother-in-law would vehemently disagree with their plan to marry.

Her phone rang, and she took it out of her purse. Since Adrienne didn’t have a habit of answering calls from unknown numbers, she pressed the button to end the call. She decided to take a bath, ignoring the subsequent calls that followed. When she stepped out of the shower, dressed in nightclothes, her dinner was already placed at the corner table of her room.

Adrienne’s patience had already run out when her phone rang for the umpteenth time. She picked up her phone and pressed the accept button. A familiar voice came from the other line before she could say a word.

"You sure took your sweet time picking up my call, dear Addie."

"Lennox?" Adrienne frowned, "did Gavin give you my number?"

"Eh? I’m your fiancé, so it’s only natural I have your contact. I just called to make sure you’ve returned home safe."

Adrienne chuckled and glanced at the time. It was already seven in the evening and only a few hours since they parted. It was the first time she received a call directly from Lennox.

"I’m home now. Is that all you want to know?" She asked.

She heard Lennox sigh and then grunt as if he was in pain. He probably tried to move a little.

"I just want to make sure my mother didn’t try to intimidate you earlier. She didn’t try to convince you to back out, did she? I apologize if she said something that upset you."

"No, your mother is a sweetheart, unlike you." She answered, her previous thoughts leaving her mind.

"Forgive me for not being as good as her, sweetheart. I’ll try to be better next time."
