Chapter 53: Sweetheart (2)

"Isn’t it too early for you to call me that?" Adrienne asked amusedly. She sat at the table and picked up the small knife next to her plate. The steak was cooked medium rare, but Adrienne never liked it. Elise was the one who enjoyed eating such a dish, thinking that only the elites were able to eat the best meat in town.

"What? It’s not too early to practice. Don’t you like sweetheart? Sweetheart is probably too long. How about sweetie or darling? Baby? Sorry, I really don’t know what kind of endearment women like." Lennox admitted, but Adrienne knew he was teasing her. There was no way a man like him had never been with a woman before his accident.

"You must be bored there to call me just to tell me this." She pointed out. Adrienne also noticed how casually he was talking to her. "Don’t you have anyone there to accompany you?"

"Mom and Gavin already left. You have no idea how boring it is staying in a place like this." She heard Lennox grumble. "I think I might lose my mind if I continue to stay here. I envy you for being able to go wherever you want."

Adrienne had no idea how to respond to that. She didn’t want to say something insensitive or try to give him sympathetic words because she knew it was the last thing Lennox needed.

"Don’t you have anything else to do?"

"What else can I do? Gavin has already dealt with almost everything. We’re still waiting for news from Samantha. Anyway, I heard that your Uncle Reese visited you earlier."

Adrienne arched her brow. How did Lennox find out about it? Unless he planted a spy in her household to keep an eye on her. It seems like he didn’t fully trust her yet.

"You send someone to spy on me?"

It wouldn’t hurt to test the waters to know his intention.

"Huh? Is that what it looks like? I merely sent one of my people to look after you. You can’t walk around claiming to be my fiancée without a bodyguard. I won’t allow you to die on me, Adrienne Jiang. Though your father is a sly snake, he’s a coward. I heard he couldn’t even utter a single word in defense against your Uncle Reese."

Adrienne let out a low laugh this time. "That isn’t nice to say about your future father-in-law, Lennox."

"Father-in-law? You must be joking. If he’d treated you right from the beginning, he wouldn’t have to make an enemy out of me. Our fathers might have been cut from the same cloth. They don’t deserve our pity or respect! I might be like this, Addie, but I have a hundred — no, thousands of ways to make his life miserable."

"You don’t need to bother yourself doing that. I can deal with him and the rest of the Jiang family." Her tone sounded very serious. Adrienne would never allow anyone to seek vengeance for her. She wouldn’t be bound by gratitude that others could use against her in this lifetime!

"I know you already have plans regarding them, Addie, but if you need help, you only have to ask. If it makes you uncomfortable, you can offer something in return. It may take years before I can fully recover, so I may not be able to come to you at once, but I’ll do my best to assist you in your quest for revenge."

Silence ensued between them as Adrienne didn’t expect those words from Lennox. For her, what they currently had was nothing but a deal that could benefit each other. She didn’t want to get attached to him. It would be better if Lennox only saw her as a business partner and nothing else. Adrienne didn’t want to complicate things between them by befriending him. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

"Thank you for your offer, Mr. Qin. I’ll keep it in mind."

"What are you doing anyway? Did I call at the wrong time? You weren’t picking up my calls earlier." Lennox said as if he wasn’t offended by her subtle dismissal.

"About to have dinner? And you?" She asked out of courtesy.

"I’m at your mother’s room, waiting for the nurses to make their last rounds for today."

Adrienne stiffened on her seat. Because of the events that took place today, she didn’t have a chance to see her mother.

"I-is she alright? Did that nurse come back?"

"No, Addie. Gavin and I already dealt with her, and it won’t take long before she will be out of practice. She would never be able to hurt or kill another patient after this. You have my word."

Adrienne stood and went to the bedside drawer. She opened it and took the luxurious black card she’d kept for some time.

"I see. Then I should prepare a parting gift, don’t you think?"

Her eyes turned cold as she looked at the cursive writing on the card. Elysian... if she had a choice and power to do it, she would ruin and tear down the place with her hand. How many lives had been ruined because of it? For the wealthy bachelors and married men, that place was a haven, but for women who were working at Elysian, it was hell on earth.

"Oh? You made me curious about this gift, Addie. Won’t you tell me?"

"I’m afraid it would ruin your impression of me if you know, Mr. Qin. Are you sure you want to get involved with someone like me?"

"Don’t you think it’s too late to ask me such a question, Addie?" Lennox retorted. "You wear a mask depending on the person before you, but you cannot fool me. Do you know? You and I are nothing alike, but the same in many ways."

"What does that supposed to mean?" Adrienne huffed. She wasn’t trying to pretend before Lennox because fooling him was more risky than being honest with him.

"That’s for you to figure out, Sweetheart."
