Chapter 321: Karma Is a B*tch (1)

It didn’t take long before the police caught the whiff of Cayden’s involvement in Rosemary’s case. The wire transfers on Nurse Chen’s account were tracked back to Cayden, and now the authorities are after him.

Lewis didn’t get a wink of sleep last night when he received the news that his son never made it to the safe house the other night. Cayden had been missing, and his phone was out of coverage and could not be reached. He was worried about him.

None of his people could find him, leaving Lewis frantically searching for any leads or clues that could help locate Cayden. The police’s involvement only heightened his concern, as he feared the worst possible outcome for his son’s disappearance.

However, much to his shock, Lewis heard the news that Cayden had been apprehended at his apartment in Jinling City. Lewis couldn’t believe it and went to the police station in a hurry, wanting to know how the police managed to get Cayden.

When he arrived, he requested to meet his son, which was easily granted. Lewis entered the room and saw Cayden looking pale and disheveled, with a mix of relief and confusion on his face.

"How did they get you?" Lewis asked, "You are supposed to be in the safe house. What the hell are you doing in your apartment in Jinling?"

It would have been easy for them to delay the arraignment and could devise a new plan to prepare a defense plan.

Cayden ran his fingers through his hair. "I don’t know, Dad. When I woke up, I was already there, and the police suddenly showed up and took me away. "

Lewis was rendered speechless. It was as if someone knew the police would be looking for Cayden and left him at his apartment on time. He got a feeling that it was an elaborate plan to ensure Cayden would be apprehended.

Was it Adrienne? He wondered. But Lewis didn’t think Adrienne had the resources to do something like this towards Cayden. However, Adrienne hadn’t shown up or revealed herself since the arrest of Camilla. It was as if she wasn’t involved in any of these.

"What do we do now?" Cayden asked worriedly. Troubles were coming to their door one after another, and the Jiang family was too overwhelmed to deal with them all at the same time.

Lewis didn’t know what to say. Since the day of the arrest of his wife, the market share price of Jiang Corporation has plummeted. However, he was more than shocked to find out that Adrienne and Chairman Qu had sold their company shares the day before the arrest.

Lewis found it suspicious. He didn’t believe one bit that his estranged daughter wasn’t involved in any of this. She must have known something like this would happen, so she already cut her losses and wanted to watch on the sidelines as everything fell apart.

"I don’t know," he muttered. "I don’t know anymore. Prosecutor Ji would rather not be involved to protect himself. The wedding between his son and Elise is also cancelled."

"They can’t do this to us, Dad!" Cayden exclaimed, "What would happen to Elise if she couldn’t join the Ji family? Who would guarantee her safety?"

Lewis stared at his son. He didn’t believe Cayden was worried about his sister’s safety. He was more upset that the Ji family turned their back on them at this crucial time. Cayden had been working with Prosecutor Ji for some time now and he must have thought his boss would cover for him.

"We’ll do what we can do, but don’t say anything that could make matters worse for you and your mother, Cayden." He reminded his son. "I’m serious, Cayden. Don’t mess it up for me."

Cayden nodded but didn’t say anything conclusive. Lewis knew that this legal case would be expensive and it would be hard to prove his wife and Cayden’s innocence. If Adrienne was really the one responsible for all of these, she was clearly playing them on the palm of her hands.

Lewis walked out of the room and leaned against the wall, the weight of the situation bearing down on him. He had never felt so helpless in his life. The Jiang family had always been powerful, always in control, but now they were at the mercy of the legal system.

Lewis left the police station deep in thought, wondering what his next move should be. As he walked towards his car, he noticed a black car parked a few meters away. He recognized the person inside the car, and his heart skipped a beat.

It was Adrienne. He hadn’t seen her since Kristoff Fu joined their company.

Lewis walked towards the car and knocked on the window. Adrienne lowered it, and Lewis could see the smirk on her face.

"So it was you all along?" He glared at her. "What are you doing here?"

"I heard about Cayden’s arrest, and I wanted to check on him," Adrienne said, still smirking.

"You knew about this, didn’t you? You knew the police would be after him," Lewis accused her.

Adrienne shrugged. "Perhaps. But you should be thanking me, father. I saved you from the trouble of having to deal with Cayden’s mess."

Lewis clenched his fists, trying to control his anger. "You sold your shares in the company the day before Camilla’s arrest. Did you know about that too?"

Adrienne’s smirk faded, and her eyes narrowed. "I did what I had to do to protect myself."

"Protect yourself? You’re my daughter, Adrienne. This is our family’s business," Lewis said, his voice rising.

"Family?" Adreienne scoffed. "I thought you made it clear to me I wasn’t part of your family. I have no interest in being part of your Jiang family, Mr. Jiang. You should have known something like this would happen. Karma is a bitch, you know. Good luck with your legal troubles."

Adrienne then rolled up the window and the car drove away leaving Lewis fuming behind.

"He must be really out of his mind if he thought they could get away easily this time." Myrtle laughed as she served drinks to Gavin and for herself as they sat in her living room.

Gavin looked around. It wasn’t the first time he’d been here and though Myrtle’s place was smaller than his bedroom, he felt calmer when he’s here.

He took a sip of his drink and looked at Myrtle. "Do you really think they’re going down?"

Myrtle raised an eyebrow. "Of course, they are. The Jiang family has been hiding behind their money and power for too long. It’s about time they face the consequences of their actions, especially what they did to Addie and her mother."

Gavin nodded in understanding.

"I completely agree. But I wonder what Adrienne’s next plan is. She’s always been one step ahead of everyone. She’s proven time and time again that she’s not to be underestimated. And with everything that’s been happening, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s already put her plan in motion."

"I just feel sorry for Addie. She doesn’t deserve to suffer because of her family’s mistakes." Myrtle sighed. "After all these years, the Jiang family would be finally face retirbution."

She paused and took his hand, smiling at him.

"But enough with Addie, how was your trip?"

Gavin grumbled and sighed.

"You and I both know it’s not a vacation trip, Myrtle. Lennox had to stay here while I need to go overseas to oversee our headquarters for two weeks. With Alistair and the Han Corporation hounding us, we have to make sure out security measures wouldn’t be compromised."

Myrtle placed a hand on his shoulder. "I know, but it’s still important to take care of yourself. You can’t work all the time, Gavin."

Gavin smiled at her, appreciating her concern. "You’re right, Myrtle. I have been working too hard lately, but I have to make sure everything is secure. I can’t afford to let anything slip. It doesn’t help that the Qin family had started making movements. You know what this means for Lennox’s siblings, right?"

Myrtle’s face turned serious as she listened to Gavin’s concerns. "I know. It’s a delicate situation, and we have to be careful. But you have to take care of yourself too," she reminded him. "My brother hasn’t done anything to harm you, right?"

Gavin shook his head. He gave her hand a light squeeze to calm her down. Myrtle was always anxious whenever she spoke about her half-brother. He wondered what kind of things would happen between her and Alistair for Myrtle to act like this.

"No, no. He hasn’t." He answered, trying to reassure her. Gavin knew that one of the reasons why Myrtle hesitated to be with him initially was she feared what Alistair could do to hurt him.

Myrtle gave him a warm smile.

"Sorry. I just can’t help but worry, but I guess Alistair was too occupied with the problems in their company to bother with us."
