Chapter 319: A Nightmare for the Jiang Family (1)

Lewis rushed to the police station as soon as he received Elise’s phone call, informing him of Camilla’s arrest. When he stepped out of the car, reporters swarmed around him, flashing cameras and bombarding him with questions. Lewis shielded his face from the blinding lights, realizing that Camilla’s arrest had already become a media spectacle.

It was already a media fiacso—a nightmare not only for the Jiang family but also for their family. Lewis dreaded the news of what awaited him inside the station. As he walked through the doors, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease, wondering how the media frenzy would impact Camilla’s case. The weight of the situation hung heavy on his shoulders as he braced himself, hoping that his wife hadn’t implicated him yet.

More people had come to spectate as the evening news reported Camilla’s arrest and everyone should have heard of it by now.

Two detectives came and greeted him and explained Camilla’s situation. They asked him to cooperate with him and refuse to make any comments in public just yet. Lewis had no choice but to agree. However, he had yet to hear about his estranged daughter.

"Did my daughter, Adrienne, say something about this?" He asked the detectives.

The lady detective frowned and shared a knowing look with her partner. It seemed to them that this couple was determined to pin the blame on his eldest daughter, although Adrienne Jiang had yet to make an appearance or a statement.

"No, I’m afraid not, Mr. Jiang. However, your first wife had been here and just left an hour ago." The lady detective replied. "Miss Zhao was the one who sued your wife, after all."

Lewis looked at her in disbelief. This wasn’t what he expected to hear when he decided to come here. He assumed Adrienne would be waiting here, causing trouble. Never did he imagine that the wife he betrayed would one day wake up and seek revenge as soon as Rosemary woke up.

His mind went blank. Lewis wondered how much Rosemary knew of what he and Camilla had done for the past years. Rosemary recovering from her coma was a bad premonition for Lewis. He couldn’t help but think that since his first wife managed to avoid death, and the misfortune that was brought by Adrienne would befall him.

As Lewis stood there, lost in thought, the detectives tried to get him to focus on the matter at hand. "Mr. Jiang, we need to talk to you about the charges against your wife," the male detective said, trying to steer the conversation back to Camilla. "It’s very serious, and we need to know if you have any information that can help us with our investigation."

Lewis rubbed his forehead, feeling a headache starting to form. He knew he had to cooperate with the police, but his mind kept going back to the fact that his first wife was involved in all of this. He wondered what kind of game Rosemary was playing and what she hoped to gain from it.

"I understand," he said finally, trying to push his thoughts aside. "What can I do to help?"

The detectives looked at each other, then back at Lewis.

"We want to know if your wife ever mentioned meeting Nurse Chen before. Are you aware that she was bribing the nurse to keep your first wife in custody?"The male detective asked. He kept his gaze on Lewis, gauging his reaction.

Lewis shook his head. "I don’t know anything about what she’s been doing," he said, feeling a twinge of guilt. He knew that wasn’t entirely true, but he didn’t want to implicate himself further.

There was a deafening silence followed after he spoke those words.

"Well, if you think of anything, please let us know," the male detective said. "In the meantime, we’ll be questioning your wife and anyone else who might be involved."

Lewis nodded, feeling a sense of relief as the detectives led him to a private room to see his wife. He was caught off guard, seeing his wife disheveled and not in her usual state. Camilla looked as if she was on the brink of losing her mind. Her eyes were bloodshot and puffy, and her hair was unkempt.

He walked towards her, feeling a sense of pity as he saw the state she was in. Camilla’s eyes were red and swollen from crying, and her hair was disheveled. Camilla was far from the beautiful woman he left at home that morning.

Lewis wondered what could have possibly happened to his wife in jail to make her look like this. As he approached her, Camilla jumped up and ran towards him, wrapping her arms around him.

"Lewis, you have to help me," she sobbed. "I didn’t think something like this would happen. Rose, she’s been here. She humiliated and degraded me, Lewis. I wasn’t the one who started this, but her!"

Camilla looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears. She expected him to help her as always, knowing that Lewis couldn’t say no when she acted like this. However, her husband’s next words stunned Camilla in place.

"You haven’t told them about my involvement, are you?" Lewis narrowed his eyes on his wife.

Camilla looked at him in disbelief. "What are you talking about? I haven’t said anything about you," she replied, her voice trembling.

Lewis let out a sigh of relief. "Good," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I know I haven’t been a good husband to you, but I need you to understand that I can’t be implicated in this. We have children to protect, and if the media gets wind of this, it will only make things worse."

He knew that actively helping Camilla could only make things worse for both of them. He needed to tread carefully, knowing that the police were already suspicious of him.

Camilla nodded, understanding the situation. "I won’t say anything about you, Lewis," she promised. "But what are we going to do about Rosemary? She’s going to ruin everything for us!"

Lewis frowned, feeling a sense of frustration and anger rise within him. "I don’t know," he said, his voice low. "But we have to figure something out. I won’t let her ruin everything I’ve worked for."

"Do you think it’s Addie’s idea? She must have told Rosemary something for her mother to act like this." Camilla questioned him.

"I don’t know." Lewis shook his head. "I don’t know what Addie is thinking anymore. It’s hard for me to predict what she was up to. I’ll send Cayden away in the meantime. I won’t let them detain Cayden as well."

Camilla felt dejected, but she could only nod her head. She would rather make a sacrifice than see their son completely ruined by Adrienne.

"How about Elise? You must convince the Ji family to proceed with the wedding." She desperately told her husband. Camilla knew that her reputation in public was now beyond salvation, and she didn’t want her children to suffer because of it.

"I tried to call Prosecutor Ji, but his wife said to wait for his call. We can only wait and see before we decide how to proceed." Lewis answered. "For now, keep your silence. You know what could happen if they find out about Cayden’s involvement."
