Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 316: A Little Payback (3)
As the car pulled into the police station, Camilla was overwhelmed by the media frenzy that awaited her. Reporters swarmed around her, shouting questions and thrusting microphones in her face. She could barely make out what they were saying, but she knew they were asking her about the attempted murder charge. She tried to speak to defend herself, but her words were lost in the chaos.
Eventually, she was taken to a cold interrogation room and left alone. The room was stark and empty, and the only sound was the ticking of the clock on the wall. Camilla sat in the uncomfortable metal chair, her mind racing. She knew that Adrienne wouldn’t allow the authorities to arrest her without irrefutable evidence.
But as she sat there, alone and afraid, Camilla knew one thing for certain: she would do whatever it took to clear her name. She cannot allow Hunter or Adrienne to win this time. She thought she should have gotten rid of those two for good a long time ago.
"Officers. There must be a mistake here. I never knew or met Nurse Chen before. There must be someone who forced her to make such a statement to incriminate me." She said it in defense.
The lady detective seated across from her only gave Camilla a brief glance and said nothing in response. Her partner, a male detective, had yet to return as he was summoned outside because the plaintiff in the case had also arrived after hearing Camilla’s arrest.
"It must be my stepdaughter," Camilla said with a hint of bitterness in her tone. "Ever since I married her father, Addie refused to accept me and always brought trouble to the family. She never gave me a chance to be a mother to her, but instead blamed me for ruining her family."
The detective raised an eyebrow at Camilla’s statement. "And what makes you think your stepdaughter is involved in this?" she asked, her voice neutral.
Camilla took a deep breath, collecting her thoughts. If this was all Adrienne’s doing, then she wouldn’t give her the satisfaction to see her in despair. She knew that Adrienne was trying to rile up things and would want to mess up the plans of their family.
"Addie never approved of her father’s remarriage. She must have thought I was the one who made Nurse Chen drug her mother to keep her in a coma. Addie was expelled from our family and didn’t get the inheritance she expected. She’s always been jealous of Elise and me, and I wouldn’t put it past her to try and bring us down."
The detective nodded thoughtfully, making notes on her pad. "Interesting theory," she said. "But do you have any proof to back it up?"
Camilla shook her head. "No, I don’t. But I swear to you, I had nothing to do with Miss Zhao’s illness. I may not be on good terms with my stepdaughter, but I would never resort to such a heinous act."
Camilla repeatedly swore Adrienne into her heart. It must have been that little bitch’s doing to inform the media of her arrest. Adrienne was trying to humiliate her.
The detective sighed and leaned back in her chair, scrutinizing Camilla’s every move. "I understand that you’re upset and trying to save yourself, but without concrete evidence, your theory is just speculation," she said. "We need solid proof to go on, and right now, you have nothing. There were CCTV recordings of you and Nurse Chen meeting several times and you purchasing the drugs from a nearby pharmacy."
Camilla’s heart sank as she heard the detective’s words. CCTV recordings? Purchasing drugs from a pharmacy It all sounded like damning evidence against her. She cursed inwardly. She and Cayden spent a hefty amount of money to keep Rosemary in a coma, and she never thought Nurse Chen would betray her in order to get a lower sentence from the court.
"I swear to you, I didn’t purchase any illegal drugs," Camilla said, trying to remain calm despite the rising panic in her chest. "I don’t know what Nurse Chen was talking about, but I had nothing to do with Miss Zhao’s illness. Please, you have to believe me."
She was starting to get nervous. Why hasn’t her lawyer shown up yet? Elise should have informed her husband about her arrest.
"I understand that this must be difficult for you, but I have to go by the evidence we have. If you can provide any proof that supports your claims, we’ll definitely look into it. Otherwise, I’m afraid we’ll have to proceed with the charges against you."
"Can you please call my stepdaughter then? I would like a word with her. I’m going to convince her to drop these charges against me."
"You are mistaken, Madam Jiang. It wasn’t your stepdaughter who sued you, but Miss Zhao herself."
Camilla was stunned in her seat, her eyes wide as she looked at the detective in disbelief. The officer’s words felt like a bomb dropped from nowhere, rendering her speechless. Before she could say a word, the door of the room she was in suddenly opened, and a familiar face was revealed before her.
"Rosemary?" Camilla muttered in shock; her face turned pale as if she’d seen a ghost. She had assumed that this woman was already dead as they hadn’t heard of any news of her for the past years.
Rosemary Zhao was as beautiful as Camilla could remember during their younger years in university. The only difference now was that she needed a cane to support her balance. Rosemary was dressed in a white floral dress with a beige coat draped over her shoulder. Her long, dark hair was braided and pinned up neatly, showcasing her delicate features. Camilla couldn’t help but notice the determination in Rosemary’s eyes, despite the surprise of their unexpected reunion.
Behind her stood the notorious loan shark Cayden used to owe money to years ago. Uncle Shark gave Camilla a blank look, as if he had nothing to do with the misfortune that fell on her family.
Camilla was confused and shocked at the same time. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing at that moment.
"Hello, Camilla. It’s been a while, hasn’t it?" Rosemary said it with a slight smile on her lips, but her eyes were as cold as night.
